Educational Debts And The Worsening Position Of Small-Firm, Government, And Legal-Services Lawyers, David L. Chambers
Educational Debts And The Worsening Position Of Small-Firm, Government, And Legal-Services Lawyers, David L. Chambers
Articles
Law school operating costs are up. Tuitions are up. The debts of law students are up. What is happening to the students who have borrowed large sums? Are their debts affecting their decisions about the jobs to seek? Once in practice, are they significantly affecting the standard of living they can afford to maintain? What, in particular, is the effect of debts on those who enter-or contemplate entering-small firms, government, legal services, and "public interest" work where salaries are lower than in most other settings in which lawyers work? In the preceding essay, Jack Kramer has performed another extremely valuable …

The purpose of this Article is to explore the common elements of legal and medical education and to compare the reform movements in each profession, with a view toward finding an explanation for the widely differing conditions that exist today in the education of each profession. For example, why is it that medical education can provide facilities and training costing up to ten times that provided law students? Why do medical schools receive outside financial support paying up to 95% of the costs of medical education while law schools are supported primarily by tuition and fees? Why do medical students …

Negative Attitudes Of Law Students: A Replication Of The Alienation And Dissatisfaction Factors, Paul D. Carrington, James J. Conley
Michigan Law Review
In 1976 we conducted a survey of law students at The University of Michigan. Demographic information; personal goals and values; and attitudes toward the law school, the faculty, and fellow students were surveyed. We factor-analyzed the items relating to attitudes, personal goals, and values. Three major factors were identified and labeled as alienation, dissatisfaction, and sociability. We have recently described the alienation factor extensively and outlined the dissatisfaction and sociability factors. In March 1977, we conducted a second survey designed to replicate the earlier study. Despite the addition of a few new items, the questionnaire was essentially unchanged. The new …

The Alienation Of Law Students, Paul D. Carrington, James J. Conley
The Alienation Of Law Students, Paul D. Carrington, James J. Conley
Michigan Law Review
Not many years ago, as much as one-fifth of a first-year class at The University of Michigan Law School did not return for the second year. It was a cause of regret that so much waste and frustration was associated with this non-event. Whether students failed or voluntarily withdrew, their time, money, and opportunity were lost.

Community Legal Workers At Parkdale Community Legal Services October 1977, Katie Mcgovern, Frederick H. Zemans
Books
Since its opening in September 1971, Parkdale Community Legal Services has served as both a neighbourhood law office and as Osgoode Hall Law School's first clinical training setting. Law students have been the primary deliverers of legal.services, with a growing number of staff lawyers, articling students, and practitioners supervising the student caseload. But most law students spend only one semester at Parkdale; therefore the staff lawyers and especially the community legal workers must provide continuity within the office and serve as the conduit to the Parkdale community.

Law Reform And Law For The Layman: A Challenge To Legal Education, Walter Barnett
Vanderbilt Law Review
Most of the current debate over academic neutrality has centered on whether the university as an institution--the faculty and students as a corporate body--should take formal positions on political issues, such as the war in Vietnam. This article will address the related, but perhaps more mundane, question whether law professors should take a more active role in providing legal services to government and to the public when this activity might provoke attacks on academic freedom. Traditionally, law professors who have sought to serve society in ways other than educating lawyers have engaged in the following five extramural activities:' (1) The …

Since the summer of 1965 when the Michigan Supreme Court first authorized law student practice on the behalf of indigent persons, students at the University of Michigan Law School have been engaged in extensive practice on behalf of indigent persons in Washtenaw County. Between 75 and 125 second and third year students at the University of Michigan Law School each semester have worked at the Washtenaw County Legal Aid Clinic under the direction of the OEO Staff attorneys. Students receive neither credit nor pay for such work and their activities are not directly supervised by the faculty. That volunteer experience …
Failure Of Religious, Moral And Legal Controls To Meet The Needs Of Modern Life: Legal Education, Frederick K. Beutel
Failure Of Religious, Moral And Legal Controls To Meet The Needs Of Modern Life: Legal Education, Frederick K. Beutel
Cleveland State Law Review
Law is social control, and law devised without direct reference to the facts of life of the people controlled is not likely to be successfully administered. This is especially true in the modern world where social conditions are being changed with kaleidoscopic rapidity, while laws are changing slowly if at all. If all the professions using science have so changed man's environment, why does it not make sense to give the scientific method a improve law and government? The means of accomplishing this have been discussed at length elsewhere and need not be repeated here; but the impact of these …

This article addresses the roles of universities and law schools and their changing roles in society. While many universities and law schools are assuming leadership roles in national and even global communities, the new challenge is their responsibility to the communities they reside in.

Since the leasing of its office in August 1965, the Washtenaw County Legal Aid Society has been open nearly 50 hours per week and has been staffed exclusively by second and third-year law students from the University of Michigan Law School. The bulk of the practice has been in family law--divorce, support, custody--but there have been a substantial number of creditor-debtor cases, a handful of misdemeanor defense cases, and a large batch of miscellaneous cases.
Science And The Law Symposium: Introduction, David F. Cavers
Science And The Law Symposium: Introduction, David F. Cavers
Michigan Law Review
This symposium reflects a growing concern that, in a period when our society is being rapidly transformed by science and technology, increasing attention be directed to the bearing of this development on law as our society's primary control system. Moreover, since law can exert some influence on the rate and direction of scientific and technological change, the examination must extend as well to the bearing of law on the processes of that change.

Law School Building
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Lectures on three phases of law -- practice, judicial interpretation, and teaching -- will provide a two-day program preceding the dedication Nov. 2 of the new law school building at Indiana University.
Addison C. Harris Lectures, a series provided from the estate of the late Indianapolis attorney, have been scheduled by the School of Law for the afternoon of Oct. 31 and on Nov. 1.
The University, it was announced Monday by Dean Leon H. Wallace, will confer honorary doctor of laws degrees at the convocation on Chief Justice Warren, Herman C. Krannert, board chairman of Inland …

Letter From Luther M. Grimes, Class Of 1893 (1957), Luther M. Grimes
Law School Building
Upon receiving an invitation to attend the 1957 dedication festivities for the newly built law building, Class of 1893 alum Luther M. Grimes hand wrote a response that is one part RSVP and one part trip down memory lane.
He said that he was regretfully unable to attend; at 87 1/2 years it was "on account of age" that he couldn't travel from his Iowa home. He considered that he may have been among the oldest living Indiana University alums, and was, with certainty, the last surviving member of his law class.
As a Bloomington native with familial ties to …

Legal Realists, Legal Fundamentalists, Lawyer Schools, And Policy Science--Or How Not To Teach Law, Fred Rodell
Legal Realists, Legal Fundamentalists, Lawyer Schools, And Policy Science--Or How Not To Teach Law, Fred Rodell
Vanderbilt Law Review
Increasingly over the past years, there has cropped up in the law reviews a special kind of leading article. It does not deal with anything courts are doing or legislatures are doing or lawyers are doing; it does not even deal with what courts or legislatures or administrators or lawyers ought to be doing; instead, it deals with a subject of apparently endless and obviously narcissistic fascination to the law teachers who write the articles. It deals with the teaching of law. More precisely, these articles are concerned with how the law teachers who write the articles think other law …
If Men Were Angels: A Review, E. Blythe Stason
If Men Were Angels: A Review, E. Blythe Stason
Michigan Law Review
Occasionally one encounters a new book that is genuinely interesting because of the refreshing vigor with which it attacks an important and timely problem. Such a book is Jerome Frank's new volume, If Men Were Angels. Indeed in some of its chapters its vigor approaches violence, a fact which adds spice to the reading.
