A Tribute To D. Dortch Warriner, Theodore J. Burr Jr. Jan 1986

A Tribute To D. Dortch Warriner, Theodore J. Burr Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

I first met David Dortch Warriner in the spring of 1976 when I called him at his Emporia, Virginia office to see if he had a position available in his law firm for a lawyer just out of law school. Although I had not met him prior to my call, I knew a little of him because he was a district chairman in the Republican Party of Virginia at the time.

A Tribute To D. Dortch Warriner, Robert R. Merhige Jr.

University of Richmond Law Review

On May 31, 1974, D. Dortch Warriner, an attorney from Emporia, Virginia, took the oath of office as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia. That solemn and auspicious occasion, which took place before the bench of the Circuit Court of Brunswick County, Virginia, was the genesis of twelve exciting and contributing years not only for Judge Warriner but for those of us, like myself, who came to know, admire, respect and love him.

Individual And Community: An Appreciation Of Mr. Justice Powell, Christina B. Whitman

Articles

When the nomination of Lewis F. Powell, Jr., to the Supreme Court of the United States was submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee ten years ago, much was made of his extraordinary record of service to his city, his state, and his profession.1 Justice Powell's career has been a model of individual responsibility to society. His belief in the value of civic life, and in the desirability of making such a life available to everyone, has been a dominant influence in his work on the Supreme Court. In what follows, I shall attempt to define some of the assumptions with …

The Court Years 1939-1975: The Autobiography Of William O. Douglas (1980), Ralph S. Tyler

Washington Law Review

Few Americans would claim objectivity on the subject of William O. Douglas. He inspired powerful reactions. I start by stating my deeply held admiration for Justice Douglas, a respect nurtured at a distance and from his writings. His writings brought Douglas the man and Douglas the Justice close to many who never met him. His words show him to be a man who cared profoundly about the world, its people, his country, and the law. Decades of American law students, particularly those like me who studied law in the 1960's and 1970's, listened to Justice Douglas, whether he was in …

In the spring of 958, Justice Harold Burton informed President Eisenhower of his decision to retire at the end of the Term, but, at the President's request, withheld public announcement until the latter was ready to name a successor. In September, Eisenhower appointed Potter Stewart, who became, at age forty-three, the second youngest person to serve on the Supreme Court since the Civil War.

Mr. Justice Douglas, L. A. Powe, Jr. Apr 1980

Mr. Justice Douglas, L. A. Powe, Jr.

Washington Law Review

"The average American," according to William O. Douglas, "is an independent, rough and ready kind of fellow who wants to take a swing on his own." That statement goes a long way toward describing Douglas himself. Given his drive and intelligence, however, it would be inappropriate to equate Douglas with the "average American." He was, as his more than forty years of public service demonstrated, one of the extraordinary Americans in our history.
