Establishment of the Ottawa Convention Banning Landmines was regarded by many international law scholars, international activists, diplomats and international organization personnel as a defining, 'democratizing' change in the way international law is made. By bringing international NGOs - what is often called 'international civil society' - into the diplomatic and international law-making process, many believe that the Ottawa Convention represented both a democratization of, and a new source of legitimacy for, international law, in part because it was presumably made 'from below'. This summary focuses on where Palestinian refugees can bring individual restitution and compensation claims. It does not discuss fora where claims for realizing the right of return might be made, although such claims will be mentioned as appropriate in the context of the discussions of restitution/compensation fora. Palestinian refugees do not at present have any forum immediately available in which they can file individual claims for restitution and/or compensation for losses sustained as a result of their expulsion from their lands and homes in 1948. Facts: The appellant was convicted of offences of assault and child abuse. The acts for which she was convicted included hitting a child on his mouth, which resulted in the child losing a milk tooth. This article examines the stereotyping of Islam both by advocates and academics in refugee rights advocacy. The article looks at a particular aspect of this stereotyping, which can be seen as ‘neo-Orientalism’ occurring in the asylum and refugee context, particularly affecting women, and the damage that it does to refugee rights both in and outside the Arab and Muslim world. The article points out the dangers of neo-orientalism in framing refugee law issues and asks for a more thoughtful and analytical approach by Western refugee advocates and academics on the panoply of Muslim attitudes and Islamic thought affecting applicants for …

As the volume of debris in the planet's orbit continues to grow, the risks and costs associated with orbital collisions are taking their toll on the space industry. The United Nations Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects seeks to address this modern day tragedy of the commons, yet it applies only to large, identifiable pieces of orbital debris. As most debris consists of small fragments, the source of which cannot be identified, the U.N. Convention is limited in its effect.

Wye River Memorandum: A Transition To Final Peace, Justus R. Weiner

After a lengthy impasse in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, a series of several agreements designed to foster peace led to the Wye River Memorandum. This agreement, negotiated in conjunction with President Clinton, established concrete steps for each side to take in reaching lasting peace. This Article analyzes the Wye River Memorandum in the context of the legal and political controversies surrounding its adoption and implementation. Additionally, this Article includes a postscript that addresses the recent Al-Aqsa Intifada.

Ballot initiatives are generally seen as a local phenomenon, and consequently have rarely been examined from an international perspective. Thus, the subcategory of international environmental initiatives is small. However, in the last thirty years, the use of ballot initiatives has increased in the United States. 17 With the expanding globalization of society, more and more ballot initiatives may have an impact on international environmental issues.
