The story of Russia’s membership in the Council of Europe now has a beginning, a middle, and an end. What can we learn about the values of this international organization, and its preeminent human rights convention, from Russia’s inclusion in them? Was Russia’s membership “worth it”? Any attempted answer must produce more questions: from which perspective – Russia’s, the Council’s, other Member States’ – should the effects of Russian membership be evaluated? Yet, there is a divergence among nations regarding what care is best for minors questioning their gender identity. The United Kingdom has begun to move away from prescribing minors puberty blockers and hormone therapies, as the federal government in the United States seeks to protect and promote gender-affirming care for youth. Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) represent the latest and perhaps most controversial form of cryptocurrency. Due to their unique nature and ability to implicate multiple legal rights, it is unclear how NFTs should or can be regulated. The lack of regulatory guidance globally has caused some investors to avoid them at all costs and issuers, advisers, and purchasers of NFTS at risk of litigation. But creating a new regulatory framework for this new form of crypto could take years. As such, countries should mold NFTs into existing cryptocurrency framework.

There has been a notable shift in the emerging Russian perspective on international law and international organizations, a trend that began nearly a decade prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over this period, Russia has made substantial alterations to its laws, constitution, and international commitments, effectively withdrawing from previously accepted legal obligations. Furthermore, Russia has increasingly rejected fundamental international legal norms and principles with growing fervor.

In the keynote remarks delivered during the Texas Tech Law Review 2023 Criminal Law Symposium, the author delves into this significant shift, providing illustrative examples.

The literature offers inconsistent answers to a question that is foundational to criminal law: Who imposes sentences? Traditional narratives place sentencing responsibility in the hands of the judge. Yet, in a country where 95 percent of criminal convictions come from guilty pleas (not trials), modern American scholars center prosecutors – who control plea terms – as the decider of punishment. This Article highlights and seeks to resolve the tension between these conflicting narratives by charting the pathways by which sentences are determined in a system dominated by plea bargains.

Investigative genetic genealogy takes identification through familial matches to a new level by comparing unidentified DNA samples to the samples submitted to increasingly popular direct-to-consumer databases, like AncestryDNA, 23andME, and FamilyTreeDNA.
