Switch Hitters: How League Involvement In Daily Fantasy Sports Could End The Prohibition Of Sports Gambling, Jordan Meddy

Whether in the form of lotto tickets or casino table games, gambling is legally permitted in some way in virtually every U.S. state. Yet, in all but a handful of jurisdictions, federal law prohibits wagering on sporting events or professional athletes in any form. Several economically challenged states, particularly New Jersey, have been trying to authorize sports gambling within their borders as a way to raise tax revenues and support their local gambling industries. While these attempts have thus far been unsuccessful, Daily Fantasy Sports have simultaneously experienced a meteoric rise, becoming a multi-billion dollar industry. This Note examines the …

A Sure Thing? Online Gaming And Canada, Ryan M. Rodenberg, John T. Holden

The legal status of gaming activities on First Nations land within Canada is complicated. The foci of this paper are two-fold. First, we trace the origin and expansion of First Nations gaming. Second, we analyze the potential of First Nations as hubs for the growing global e-gaming industry, with an emphasis on Internet poker and online sports wagering. We conclude by positing that the Canadian regulatory scheme presents an opportunity to First Nations in connection with e-gaming.

Levi Glick writes an article on the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (“PASPA”), which in effect prohibits state-sanctioned sports betting within the United States. His article addresses the efforts by the State of New Jersey to establish state-sanctioned sports betting within the state, and the subsequent legal challenges brought forth by the professional sports leagues. He focuses on the legal arguments that New Jersey leveled in challenging the leagues’ alleged claims. He also focuses on the Constitutional arguments that weigh in favor of finding PASPA unconstitutional, as well as the public policy arguments for repealing it.

There are dozens of national police investigations; hundreds of matches from top international games to the Champions League to youth teams have been fixed and over one thousand players, coaches and referees have been arrested. Sports gambling is an extremely lucrative, but scrutinized, industry. Athletic organizations contend that any form of sports wagering adversely affects players, teams, and spectators. They argue that intermingling gambling with sports turns spectators into skeptics and taints honest and fair competition. Congress enacted legislation limiting the scope of permissible sports wagering, but this legislation is under attack by many states advocating its repeal. The expansion of legalized sports wagering poses a threat, particularly on collegiate athletics. By definition, college athletes are amateurs. The definition of amateurism forms the foundation for the regulations governing intercollegiate competition. But, this status coupled with …

Although few people today may be aware of it, the team itself has a long history of association with gamblers and gambling. This Note discusses the recent surge in patron data collected by casino player tracking systems and the increasing need to protect the confidentiality and security of patron Personally Identifiable Information (PII) through the implementation of federal privacy legislation. In 2005 the gaming market was worth an estimated six billion dollars, half of that represented by online gambling revenues. However not all jurisdictions (countries) regulate the industry the same. Some jurisdictions allow the industry to flourish while some go as far as banning the industry all together. I gather data on all 75 global jurisdictions that have some form of online gaming. I analyze which regulations allow the industry to prosper while maintaining quality standards, and which regulations do not work. This Article argues that the intricate, vast amounts of consumer information compiled through casino structured intelligence require greater protection and oversight in the contexts of both bankruptcy and law enforcement. Section II examines the various types of casino technology and information gathering that casinos perform. Section III considers the available protections of private information in terms of security breaches, law enforcement sharing, and sales in the context of a bankruptcy. Section IV discusses additional safeguards and ethical concerns that should be considered as casinos continue to increase their data mining efforts. Poverty rates on Indian reservations are far higher than the national average. Since Tribal Governments have at least some control over these reservations, to what extent are they to blame for these higher than average poverty rates? I look at each reservation and their type of government, constitution, policies and demographics to analyze the causes of their poverty as it relates to tribal government. There are many other pieces of research that are similar to this, but none looking specifically at the overall effects the government has on its community.
