Dutch social security has undergone important changes since the 1990s, in that the focus shifted from predominantly compensating the loss of income into giving incentives for claimants and benefits recipients to stay in or get back to work. While still providing a relatively high level of benefit if there is no chance to work (to the full extent), the legislature has been quite creative in adopting conditions that stimulate persons to do their best to be in work. For this purpose, this is interesting for an American audience, since the USA system is far less generous out of fear that …

A Philosophy Of Privatization: Rationing Health Care Through The Medicare Modernization Act Of 2003, Eleanor Bhat Sorresso
Journal of Law and Health
The trend in coping with these rising Medicare costs has been to increase the role that private insurance plays in providing coverage for Medicare recipients. Much of this movement towards an increased "privatization" of Medicare has been born of the belief that the private sector of health care insurance coverage has been made more efficient by existing market forces and will provide a way to both continue providing health care to elderly Americans while containing Medicare costs through these increased efficiencies as exemplified through the managed care model. Evaluating The Case For Social Security Reform: Elderly Poverty, Paternalism And Private Pensions, Maria O'Brien

This Article considers the many arguments currently being made in favor of Social Security pension reform and evaluates each of them in terms of the principal Congressional goal of the program-the elimination of elderly poverty-as well as more recent goals that have been articulated by subsequent commentators such as a reduction in government paternalism and the maximization of retirement income. The Article begins with a short history of the public pension program in the United States and considers at length the details of the various reform proposals that currently enjoy support. In addition it examines the enormously regressive tax structure …
