People may initial not see the area known as the South China Sea as worthy of the trouble of an Arbitral Tribunal proceeding courtesy of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), especially when they are unsure of the trouble it may bring. This area, rich in resources and firmly entrenched in various historical claims, became the subject of controversy between multiple nations.
