Anthrogogy: Towards Inclusive Law School Learning, Rebecca C. Flanagan Jan 2019

Anthrogogy: Towards Inclusive Law School Learning, Rebecca C. Flanagan

Faculty Publications

At the time it was introduced, andragogy did offer benefits over “chalk and talk;” where most law students passively took notes while one student at a time actively engaged with their professor in a Socratic dialogue. While andragogy has sustained several modifications and revisions over the last fifty years, it does not reflect the life stage or life experiences that blur the boundaries of childhood and adulthood for over half the current student body in most law schools. Andragogy, designed as a teaching methodology for traditional adults seeking continuing education or to gain credentials for upward mobility in their current …

The Global Clinical Revolution In Law.Pdf, Richard Wilson Dec 2018

The Global Clinical Revolution In Law.Pdf, Richard Wilson

Richard J. Wilson

This book documents both the historical origins of clinical experiments in the earliest days of US university legal education, and the now-global reach of clinical pedagogy as a proven tool for effective training of legal professionals. Clinical legal education provides an alternative to traditional pedagogies used in law schools all over the world, which largely continue to rely on lecture or case methods. It is more than just another pedagogical method. It provides a way for students to experience their emerging professional selves, while providing services or projects with poor and underrepresented clients.

The book is organized into two very …

You Play Ball Like A Girl: Cultural Implications Of The Contact Sports Exemption And Why It Needs To Be Changed, Michelle Margaret Smith May 2018

You Play Ball Like A Girl: Cultural Implications Of The Contact Sports Exemption And Why It Needs To Be Changed, Michelle Margaret Smith

Cleveland State Law Review

Women in the United States have historically earned significantly less income per year compared to their male counterparts. In 2014, the pay discrepancy was at its lowest point with women earning seventy-nine cents per every dollar men earned. This discrepancy exists even though women now attain college degrees at a higher rate than men and make up 47% of the labor force. In sports, the pay discrepancy is even greater. At the professional level, women earn as little as 1.2% of what their male counterparts earn. This Note addresses how changing the contact sports exemption in Title IX to allow …

The Behaviour Of Family Lawyers And The Implications For Legal Education, John H. Wade Dec 2017

The Behaviour Of Family Lawyers And The Implications For Legal Education, John H. Wade

John Wade

Legal educators have often developed courses with the purported goal of teaching students to “think like lawyers.” Yet little is known about the ways various classes of lawyers think or behave. This paper offers some insights through anecdotal observations of the behaviour of family lawyers in Sydney. It must be conceded, however, that even beginning to demystify lawyerly behaviour does little to resolve current debates about the goals and methods of legal education.

Model United Nations And Deep Learning: Theoretical And Professional Learning, Susan Engel, Josh Pallas, Sarah Lambert Jan 2017

Model United Nations And Deep Learning: Theoretical And Professional Learning, Susan Engel, Josh Pallas, Sarah Lambert

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

This article demonstrates that the purposeful subject design, incorporating a Model United Nations (MUN), facilitated deep learning and professional skills attainment in the field of International Relations. Deep learning was promoted in subject design by linking learning objectives to Anderson and Krathwohl's (2001) four levels of knowledge or cognition: factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive. Students demonstrated improvement in all four areas; however, this article focuses on outcomes in the conceptual and metacognitive realms as these were where students showed the most growth. In the conceptual realm, the subject aimed to increase students' capacity to apply international relations theories. Students tended …

Nevin, Nevin, Tsos

TSOS Interview Gallery

Nevin is a civil engineer from Afghanistan who worked with an American company and local government. The Taliban threatened him and demanded he work for them instead and ultimately attacked him on his journey home. After this he began a dangerous journey to Europe full of smugglers, trafficking, encounters with police, poor living conditions and a trip across the Mediterranean in an overcrowded raft.

Nevin ultimately made it to Greece, where he lived in a camp for several months. He received medical care but faced new problems of closed borders and difficulty obtaining papers. He was transferred to a camp …

Professional Integrity: Thinking Ethically, Michael Pritchard Feb 2016

Professional Integrity: Thinking Ethically, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

Discussions of professional ethics tend to emphasize what not to do. Why, Michael Pritchard asks, should they not also consider the ethical heights to which professionals should aspire?Pritchard, who has taught professional ethics for more than twenty-five years, here explores the interplay of virtues, ideals, and moral rules in everyday life and the professions. In elegant prose, he emphasizes the positive dimension of professional ethics-actions that thoughtful, conscientious people ought to perceive and pursue in their careers. As Pritchard observes, problems of professional ethics originate in an increasingly specialized society where few people are able to evaluate, let alone discredit, the …
