Judge Viola J. Taliaferro, a pathbreaking jurist in Monroe County and renowned advocate for its children, passed away Monday, June 12 in Bloomington.
A 1977 graduate of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Taliaferro entered the legal profession later in life, but wasted no time making an immediate—and lasting—impact on her local community.
Viola Taliaferro earned a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1969. By then she and George had four children, and the family returned to Bloomington—where George had played for the Indiana University Hoosier football team—in 1972.
Three years later she enrolled at …

On September 27, 2017, Glen Ayers, a former professor at St. Mary’s School of Law, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Two St. Mary's alumni—Bankruptcy Judge Craig A. Gargotta (1989) and William R. “Dick” Davis, Jr. (1983)—have provided this tribute to an icon of San Antonio’s bankruptcy bar.

Rowan Cahill
In 1902 Lenin published the political tract which became a basic text for left-wing activists titled 'What is to be Done?'. Della Elliott tended not to ask that question; rather she saw what had to be done, and got in and did it. In the process, her doing was careful, meticulous, and professional; all the metaphorical'i's were dotted, and the 't's crossed. Moving away from metaphors to actualities, spelling had to be correct, and meanings clear.

Writing the introduction to a symposium in memory of a friend is a great honor, of course, and one that I seized immediately, for fear that the Editor in Chief might change his mind.

Harry Pratter (1976-1977 Acting)
The Board of Editors, in recognition of his lasting service to Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington, hereby dedicates Volume 78 of the Indiana Law Journal to the memory of Harry Pratter, who taught at the School of Law from 1950 until 1994, and passed away March 11,2002. As evidenced below, Professor Pratter's influence spread far beyond the bounds of his classroom walls, and his presence in the Law School's community will be sorely missed.

Memorial: Nicholas Triffin (1942-2000), Marie Stefanini Newman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Professor Nicholas Triffin, Director of the Pace University School of Law Library from 1984 until 1998, died on April 8, 2000, after a long and valiant battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). During the eight years Nick fought this cruel disease, his body became increasingly frail, but his will to survive, his dedication to his students, and his love of the study of the law were undiminished. Nick continued to fulfill his personal and professional obligations with grace and dignity, and taught his last class just a few days before his death. It never occurred to him to …
