Expanding access and coverage while containing costs can only be accomplished by getting more health care value for our money. Two facts about our current system make this seem possible. First, the currently uninsured are not costless. Providing stop-gap health care to those who lack health insurance is extremely expensive -- people without formal coverage cannot afford preventive services, delay treatment of illness and face substantial barriers to reaching appropriate providers. When they receive care, it is often degrading, usually complicated and costly, and more than occasionally too late. The cost of this "uncompensated" care is borne by all of …

Formulating a Best Practice Statement for Prison Parenting Programs Purpose: The purpose of this undergraduate honors project was to critically analyze available research on parenting, parenting education, incarcerated parents, and outcomes for the children of incarcerated parents, and make recommendations to a correctional facility for best practices. Background: Over 1.7 million American children have one or more incarcerated parents. These children are at high risk of depression, aggression, and intergenerational incarceration. Many incarcerated men have a limited understanding of parenting and fatherhood. While countless correctional facilities nationally have educational parenting programs, these programs are mainly unstandardized, and their efficacy is …

While Medicare appears to afford generous coverage for hospital care, statutory limitations and changes in medical practice often make access to coverage problematic. The difficulties that Medicare beneficiaries face when receiving coverage for inpatient hospital care are discussed in this article.

The Disjunction Between Prevention And Compensation Of Hip Fractures Among Elderly Citizens: The Law's Role In Creating Ex Ante Incentives, Janis Sarra

This article examines the relationship between the compensation for and the prevention of hip fractures among the growing population of seniors in Canada. Sarra postulates that the current system expends funds on liability protection that would be better spent on prevention. Options explored are no-fault compensation, redirecting legal resources, negotiated risk, and adjust[ing] the tax base to ensure that there are sufficient resources to support elderly individuals.

A growing body of research is now documenting how serious problems in the work environments of nursing care in American hospitals are posing a threat to patient safety, as well as contributing to shortages of nurses working in hospital settings and in greater job stress and burnout among nurses. A major factor in this picture, according to a major report by the National Institute of Medicine, is the issue of chronic understaffing among direct care nurses.

In recent years an ever increasing problem has emerged within the health care delivery system in the United States: there is a shortage of registered nurses to meet patient care needs. This shortage raises serious public policy concerns about how society will be assured of quality health care and who will provide that care in the future.
