Fitting A Block Into A Sphere Mold: The Inadequacy Of Current Data Privacy Regulations In Protecting Data Privacy Within The Blockchain Space, Jenny Yang Apr 2024

Fitting A Block Into A Sphere Mold: The Inadequacy Of Current Data Privacy Regulations In Protecting Data Privacy Within The Blockchain Space, Jenny Yang

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

Despite global imposition of data privacy laws and regulations, data privacy is a nonexistent luxury amongst the data-charged world we live in. Data privacy has long been established as a fundamental right. Entities have successfully established robust methodologies around existing data privacy laws and regulations to utilize past consumer behavior to predict, impact and manipulate current and future consumer behaviors. This phenomenon has been commonly coined as “corporate surveillance.” Emerging spaces arising through technological developments have greater access into consumer data to impact economic choices. Specifically, the blockchain space, through its unique open-source and permanent traits, has been able to …

Write Before You Watch: Policies For Police Body-Worn Cameras That Advance Accountability And Accuracy, Hillary B. Farber

Faculty Publications

In the wake of high-profile killings and abuse by police officers over the past few years, the public has come to expect that officers will be equipped with body-worn cameras (BWCs). These cameras capture and preserve encounters between police and civilians, and the footage they record often becomes critical evidence in criminal, civil, or administrative proceedings. Reformers believe BWCs can improve police accountability, build public trust in police, and potentially reform police behavior.

Considering the reliance on BWCs, a key question has emerged: should officers be allowed to review BWC footage before preparing a report or giving a statement, or …

The Importance Of Standardized Data Collection And Reporting In Improving Medical Care For Immigration Detainees, Allison Michelle Bowen Jun 2020

The Importance Of Standardized Data Collection And Reporting In Improving Medical Care For Immigration Detainees, Allison Michelle Bowen

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The provision of substandard medical care for immigration detainees has become somewhat of a norm for some time now. From October 1, 2003 to June 5, 2017, alone, there were a total of 172 deaths in ICE custody. This number is only rising as the number of detainee beds increases and ICE continues to not be held accountable. Presently, there lacks a mechanism for oversight and accountability of ICE. This Comment suggests that requiring standardized data collection and reporting efforts is a crucial first step towards improving the medical care for immigration detainees and creating a mechanism for oversight and …

Debt Bondage: How Private Collection Agencies Keep The Formerly Incarcerated Tethered To The Criminal Justice System, Bryan L. Adamson Apr 2020

Debt Bondage: How Private Collection Agencies Keep The Formerly Incarcerated Tethered To The Criminal Justice System, Bryan L. Adamson

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This Article examines the constitutionality of statutes which allow courts to transfer outstanding legal financial obligations to private debt collection agencies. In Washington State, the clerk of courts can transfer the legal financial obligation of a formerly incarcerated person if he or she is only thirty days late making a payment. Upon transfer, the debt collection agencies can assess a “collection fee” of up to 50% of the first $100.000 of the unpaid legal financial obligation, and up to 35% of the unpaid debt over $100,000. This fee becomes part of the LFO debt imposed at sentencing, and like that …
