Human-Machine Teaming And Its Legal And Ethical Implications, Jim Q. Chen, Thomas Wingfield Dec 2020

Human-Machine Teaming And Its Legal And Ethical Implications, Jim Q. Chen, Thomas Wingfield

Military Cyber Affairs

Humans rely on machines in accomplishing missions while machines need humans to make them more intelligent and more powerful. Neither side can go without the other, especially in complex environments when autonomous mode is initiated. Things are becoming more complicated when law and ethical principles should be applied in these complex environments. One of the solutions is human-machine teaming, as it takes advantage of both the best humans can offer and the best that machines can provide. This article intends to explore ways of implementing law and ethical principles in artificial intelligence (AI) systems using human-machine teaming. It examines the …

Covering The Indigent Defendant System, Francis J. Difiore Dec 2020

Covering The Indigent Defendant System, Francis J. Difiore

Capstones

I chose the indigent defense system in New York City as my focus community for social journalism, particularly the attorneys who work in this system and the clients they represent. I conducted interviews and outreach with working public defenders and assigned counsel in the Bronx and Manhattan, and wrote stories for a self-started online publication known as "Public Defense Informer."

Meat Wars: The Unsettled Intersection Of Federal And State Food Labeling Regulations For Plant-Based Meat Alternatives, Shareefah Taylor Oct 2020

Meat Wars: The Unsettled Intersection Of Federal And State Food Labeling Regulations For Plant-Based Meat Alternatives, Shareefah Taylor

University of Massachusetts Law Review

Due to technological advances and the rise in popularity of plant-based meat alternatives (i.e., Beyond Meat, the Impossible Burger, etc.), nearly thirty states have proposed or enacted legislation to limit which foods can be labeled with terms that have traditionally been used to describe products derived from animal carcasses (i.e., meat, burger, sausage, etc.). Fueled in many places by the cattle industry, the states’ legislation proposes stricter guidelines than the federal counterparts in an attempt to specifically prohibit plant-based, cell-based (lab-grown meat), and even insect-based products from being labeled in meat-associated terms. To date, lawsuits have been filed by opponents …

Costs Vs. Compensation: Legal And Policy Recommendations For Addressing Workplace Sexual Harassment, Heather Mclaughlin, Christine Thomas Jan 2020

Costs Vs. Compensation: Legal And Policy Recommendations For Addressing Workplace Sexual Harassment, Heather Mclaughlin, Christine Thomas

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

The recent #MeToo Movement has unequivocally shown that workplace sexual harassment is a widespread issue. Since December 2017, workers around the globe have shared personal stories of sexual harassment, as well as the tolls it caused on their health and careers. In this Article, we review extant interdisciplinary research on the negative consequences of sexual harassment for workers’ physical, psychological, and behavioral health; their career and earnings trajectories; and for broader organizational culture. Understanding these costs sheds light on how best to reduce and respond to workplace sexual harassment. We offer three suggestions for law and policy: (1) expand legal …

The Legal And Ethical Considerations Of The Posthumous Retrieval Of Gametes, Patrick Monahan Jan 2020

The Legal And Ethical Considerations Of The Posthumous Retrieval Of Gametes, Patrick Monahan

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

In the United States, federal and state laws on the issue of posthumous retrieval of gametes are almost non-existent. As the field of medicine continues to grow and more posthumous gamete retrieval procedures become viable, state courts and hospitals are left on their own when patients and family members ask their doctors to perform such procedures. As such, there exists wide variability from hospital to hospital and state to state for a deeply personal and time-sensitive procedure. By reviewing state court cases and hospital policies, this article demonstrates the variability between practices and illustrates key questions that arise when requests …
