A Collaborative Approach To Systematic Marine Protected Area Network Planning In British Columbia, Charlie Short, Karen Topelko, Kate Ladell May 2014

A Collaborative Approach To Systematic Marine Protected Area Network Planning In British Columbia, Charlie Short, Karen Topelko, Kate Ladell

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

In British Columbia, legislated responsibilities for the protection of marine values are a shared responsibility between federal and provincial governments. Traditionally, the governments of Canada and B.C. have established marine protected areas (MPAs) independently, on an ad-hoc basis, and often in response to single species or habitat specific conservation issues. This is challenging because dual designation may be required to meet MPA objectives, and ad hoc approaches may lead to gaps in biophysical representation and greater uncertainty for marine stakeholders. Recognizing the need to partner together and move towards more systematic marine conservation planning, the governments of Canada and B.C. …

A Critical Analysis Of Intellectual Disabilities And End-Of-Life Decision Making, Saritha Farris Apr 2014

A Critical Analysis Of Intellectual Disabilities And End-Of-Life Decision Making, Saritha Farris

Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)

Presently, research suggests the involvement of individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) in making end-of-life (EOL) decisions appears to be minimal (Ellison & Rosielle, 2008).

The reasons for the lack of involvement include but are not limited to communication challenges, lack of education on caring for individuals with IDs by the medical community, incorrect assumptions that the individual lacks cognitive capacity to consent, and fear of legal consequences if formal caregivers are accused of not providing enough care. (Wagemans et al., 2010).

These factors then often culminate in the individual with IDs having decisions made for them by someone else, whom …

Is Fractional Reserve Banking Necessarily Immoral?, Ryan T. Beach, Jeffrey E. Haymond Apr 2014

Is Fractional Reserve Banking Necessarily Immoral?, Ryan T. Beach, Jeffrey E. Haymond

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

When Deposits are made to a bank, the bank can loan out most of it, while claiming they have the money to pay you back. When you deposit money in a bank, only a fraction of it stays on deposit; the rest is loaned out. When the person receives the loan spends it, money goes to another bank, repeating the process. Ultimately, if the central bank puts $100 of reserves into the FRB system, $1000 of money could enter the economy.

First, we examined the historic precedence of indigenous sentencing courts in Australia. Second, we looked at current measures in Northern Ireland and their effectiveness. Third, we offered a predictive outline for the potential work in South Sudan. These case studies showed the past, present and future of restorative justice. With this knowledge we hoped that people would better understand the efficacy of restorative justice and recognize …

Converging Trends In Legal Education: Globalization Meets Experiential Education

Over the last decade, legal educators have increasingly recognized the need to prepare students for practice in an era of ever increasing globalization. More recently, changes in the legal market have imposed greater pressure to provide more experiential education for our students. To many, these trends create conflicting pressures.
