Descriptive Analysis Of State And Federal Malpractice Litigation In The United States Related To Neuroendovascular Procedures, Nazaneen Amjadi, Sohum Desai
Research Symposium
Introduction: Medical malpractice interests the medical community at large. While previous neurosurgical review articles have analyzed malpractice in the context of spinal surgery, few have reviewed malpractice data surrounding neurovascular procedures as a whole. Here we present a retrospective review of characteristics associated with malpractice litigation in cases involving neuroendovascular procedures in the United States.
Methods: Google Scholar Case Law, Casetext and Westlaw legal databases were searched for verdict and settlement reports pertaining to neurovascular procedures from 1984 to 2023. Data were collected regarding type of procedure, patient age and gender, defendant specialty, outcome, award, and alleged cause of malpractice. …
Animal Liberation Front: Threat To Kentucky, Zoe E. Hunt
Animal Liberation Front: Threat To Kentucky, Zoe E. Hunt
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a global terrorist organization that was founded in 1976. Since the creation of ALF, the group has spread rapidly as well as turned into a domestic terrorist organization in the United States. With this project, the group's potential threat to Kentucky was evaluated. ALF was evaluated using four structured analytic techniques and an intelligence collection plan. A better understanding of what ALF is was formed by the discussion of the group’s origins, ideology, and organization. In addition, the group's goals, objectives, and capabilities were discussed. Using the information gathered during the threat profile, the …

Posters-at-the-Capitol
Popular political discourse in the U.S. assumes that more funding for law enforcement and prison facilities will make civilians safer, presumably by reducing crime and sense of disorder. However, studies have shown that the relationship between these factors may not be as straightforward. With the killing of George Floyd and increased media coverage of police brutality, existing literature focuses mainly on the relationship between police and crime in the U.S. The impact of incarceration (the result of procedural justice) on the community (for whom procedural justice exists) is less known, especially on a global scale. We argue that cycling people …

Judicial Independence: An Important Yet Fragile Concept Needed For The Democracy Of The United States, Michael Johnson Jr
Capstone Showcase
My thesis explores the processes by which jurists are appointed to the bench to various State Supreme Courts through several selection methods. I delve deep into the extensive and intricate history surrounding judicial independence as an institutional concept, which has caused signs of concern for many legal and institutional scholars. My research aims to address the question: To what extent do the methods and mechanisms intended to safeguard judicial independence effectively fulfill their purpose? To answer this question, I use a pattern matching method to analyze a selection of six summary judgment cases–chosen randomly–from each state. Three cases where the …

Rising Threat - Deepfakes And National Security In The Age Of Digital Deception, Dougo Kone-Sow
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
This paper delves into the intricate landscape of deepfakes, exploring their genesis, capabilities, and far-reaching implications. The rise of deepfake technology presents an unprecedented threat to American national security, propagating disinformation and manipulation across various media formats. Notably, deepfakes have evolved from a historical backdrop of disinformation campaigns, merging with the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to craft convincing but false multimedia content.
Examining the capabilities of deepfakes reveals their potential for misuse, evidenced by instances targeting individuals, companies, and even influencing political events like the 2020 U.S. elections. The paper highlights the direct threats posed by …

When writing a graduate work, you may come across other excellent works that elevate your own work – a diagram explaining a process, a survey instrument for collecting data, an artwork that illustrates a concept, a piece of sheet music for analysis, and more. How can you ethically and legally incorporate these works into your research and writing? This session will discuss the basics of using portions of copyrighted works in your graduate work and provide real-life examples.

Currently our country has high numbers of missing persons, Tamaulipas being one of the states with the highest rate of disappearances. The identification of people has become more important thanks to the development of molecular techniques. However, the limitations are very high, because it is necessary to compare the genetic pattern of the disappeared with the parents. Therefore, the objective of this research is to standardize a genomic DNA extraction technique from contact surfaces for its subsequent implementation in the identification of disappeared, allowing the comparison of the genetic pattern with the disappeared itself. For this, genomic DNA extraction was …

Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
We all know that editing a draft, even a bad draft, is easier than starting from scratch with a blank page. Even if ChatGPT produces something you hate, the draft produced by the software can “unstick” us and our students and jump start a surge of productive work. With editing this eventually leads us to good work product, and that work product will likely be better because we started earlier and went through a more thoughtful process. The presentation would also include ways in which ChatGPT can help LRW professors with some of the parts of the job that we …

Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
AI tools like ChatGPT are increasingly widespread, and despite an uncertain future due to a rapidly evolving technology landscape, they are likely here to stay. Many of the digital tools used by law students and lawyers will soon be incorporating sophisticated AI technology into their platforms. Students already use ChatGPT to brainstorm, proofread their papers (or write them entirely), summarize information, and more. Failing to integrate ChatGPT into the legal research curriculum not only risks diminishing our professional authenticity with students but could also lead to the devaluation of traditional legal research skills in favor of convenient, albeit less reliable …

Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
Humans developed language to tell stories. Gesturing, demonstration, and vocalization worked for communicating instructions or basic information. But establishing and maintaining community required story, and story required language. Our desire to tell better stories and share them more widely has led to the creation of art forms from simple guitar ballads to epic motion pictures and intricate first-person video games. So it’s no wonder that, in the era of generative artificial intelligence, storytellers would be among the first to put AI to work. Storytellers have been using AI for years already to develop stories, which means that AI has itself …

Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
The legal research course is over a century old. As a law school subject, it predates many doctrinal courses, as well as the advent of clinical legal education. It is several decades older than its sister subject, legal writing. In spite of its age and obvious importance, the place of the legal research course in the law school curriculum remains contested. While some law faculties recognize the value of legal research instruction and require a standalone legal research course in the first year, the vast majority combine it with legal writing (often over the objections of legal writing instructors and …

What Did I Miss? A Demonstration Of The Differences Between Chatgpt-4 And 3.5 That Impact Legal Research And Writing, Laura Killinger, Leslie A. Street
Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
Many news sources are raving about how much more advanced ChatGPT-4 is than 3.5. You may have heard that ChatGPT-4 outscored 90% of test takers on the Uniform Bar Exam, while ChatGPT 3.5 only outscored 10% of test takers. But what does this mean for teaching legal research and writing? In this presentation, we will compare specific examples of ChatGPT 3.5 (the free version many of us tried in the spring) and ChatGPT-4 (the paid version released in March).

“You’Ve Got A Friend In Me”: Helping Students Help Ai, Brad Charles, Mark Cooney
Incorporating ChatGPT in the Legal Research & Writing Classroom
ChatGPT and its family of generative tools may seem new, but the process that ChatGPT imitates is as old as Egyptian papyri: The end-user still had to adapt the form text to each person’s unique situation.
Similarly, modern attorneys may use AI to adapt legal documents to their clients’ needs. But they must also learn how to spot problems in AI-generated documents — omissions, wrongful additions, inaccurate law, legalese, and poor typography. They need to instruct ChatGPT or other generative AI to continue revising until the document reflects best practices.
In short, our students as future attorneys need to know …

ITSA 2022 Gran Canaria - 9th Biennial Conference: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Global Tourism Strategies After Covid 19
The COVID-19 virus has caused the biggest worldwide economic crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s and a “zero tourism” situation with catastrophic consequences. Many authors analyzed the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, but none of them have specifically examined Spain and government actions and public policies taken to fight the pandemic. Through the case study methodology, this paper presents a literature review of the most up-to-date studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Secondly, we specify the different public intervention measures implemented by national, regional, and local authorities in Spain. Finally, we set out the …

Session 3: Diversity Enhancing Intellectual Property, Jordi Goodman, Nina Srejovic
SITIE Symposiums
The field of intellectual property suffers from a lack of diversity. Women are underrepresented as credited inventors in the United States. Additionally, multi-gender inventor groups are underrepresented compared to all-male and, sometimes, even all-female groups. This representation has changed over time, with changes not always reflecting an increase in female representation. This is particularly true when studying gender-disparity as it exists in the field of computer programming and software patents. While women were well represented in computer programming at field’s inception, this changed after World War II because men lobbied to push women out of the field. Women have since …
