An Appeal In Favor Of That Class Of Americans Called Africans, Lydia Maria Child, Paul Royster (Editor)

Zea E-Books in American Studies

The roots of white supremacy lie in the institution of negro slavery. From the 15th through the 19th century, white Europeans trafficked in abducted and enslaved Africans and justified the practice with excuses that seemed somehow to reconcile the injustice with their professed Christianity. The United States was neither the first nor the last nation to abolish slavery, but its proclaimed principles of freedom and equality were made ironic by the nation’s reluctance to extend recognition to all Americans.

“Americans” is what Mrs. Child calls those fellow countrymen of African ancestry in 1833; citizenship and equality were what she advocated …

What’S In The Forecast For The Spac Boom & The Pslra?, Nick Krone

SLU Law Journal Online

Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) have exploded in popularity. Financial projections in SPACs are currently protected by the safe harbor for forward-looking statements afforded by the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act (PSLRA). In this article, Nick Krone examines whether SPACs should be protected by the PSLRA.

Should Missouri Consider The Social Cost Of Carbon In Policymaking?, Matthew Geer

SLU Law Journal Online

The social cost of carbon (SCC) is a tool used by federal agencies to quantify the cost of carbon emissions in policymaking. As concerns surrounding climate change become more pressing, some states have also begun using the SCC in their own policies, rules, and regulations, while other states like Missouri have actively challenged the metric. In this article, Matthew Geer looks at the origin of the federal social cost of carbon and considers its effectiveness as a tool by state governments to guide policymaking that will prevent climate change from causing irreversible harm to Planet Earth.

Judicial Ethics May Decide Whether A Prisoner Can Be Touched As He Is Executed, Mikayla Lewison Jan 2022

Judicial Ethics May Decide Whether A Prisoner Can Be Touched As He Is Executed, Mikayla Lewison

SLU Law Journal Online

The community having faith in the judiciary is vital for the U.S. to function as a democracy. Recently, the Court has become seemingly more politicized, even though Americans prefer an apolitical court. In this article, Mikayla Lewison argues that personal interests of the justices on the Court have likely played a role in whether or not prisoners, like John Henry Ramirez, may have a cleric of their choice inside the chamber as they are executed.

Russia’S 2020 Constitutional Amendments And The Entrenchment Of The Moscow Patriarchate As A Lever Of Foreign Policy Soft Power, Robert C. Blitt

Book Chapters

Much has been written about the Kremlin’s embrace of the Russian Orthodox Church—Moscow Patriarchate (ROC) as a lever of soft power for advancing Russia’s foreign policy. Based on the substance of the constitutional amendments ratified in July 2020, this chapter reasons that the church-state partnership is poised to grow stronger and more entrenched in the coming years.

After briefly highlighting the energizing effect several key constitutional amendments are likely to have on existing Kremlin foreign policy objectives, this chapter offers an assessment of the ROC’s central role in disseminating and advocating these newly minted constitutional norms across its international platforms …

The International Procurement System: Liberalization & Protectionism, Jean Heilman Grier Jan 2022

The International Procurement System: Liberalization & Protectionism, Jean Heilman Grier

The International Procurement System: Liberalization & Protectionism

Government procurement is both a highly important and a highly problematic component of the international trading system. It is important because governments purchase enormous amounts of goods and services and problematic because it is especially sensitive to the twin forces of liberalization and protectionism. Governments face strong pressures to buy domestic products and at the same time open foreign procurement markets for their suppliers. The international procurement system has developed a sophisticated set of agreements that open foreign procurement markets while allowing countries to balance liberalization and protectionism.

This book strips away the complexity of the international procurement system and …
