Descriptive Analysis Of State And Federal Malpractice Litigation In The United States Related To Neuroendovascular Procedures, Nazaneen Amjadi, Sohum Desai

Research Symposium

Introduction: Medical malpractice interests the medical community at large. While previous neurosurgical review articles have analyzed malpractice in the context of spinal surgery, few have reviewed malpractice data surrounding neurovascular procedures as a whole. Here we present a retrospective review of characteristics associated with malpractice litigation in cases involving neuroendovascular procedures in the United States.

Methods: Google Scholar Case Law, Casetext and Westlaw legal databases were searched for verdict and settlement reports pertaining to neurovascular procedures from 1984 to 2023. Data were collected regarding type of procedure, patient age and gender, defendant specialty, outcome, award, and alleged cause of malpractice. …

Standardization Of A Technique For Obtaining Dna From Footprints, Gibrán Galindo-Martinez, Karla Villarreal-Sotelo, Cynthia Marisol Vargas-Orozco, Ernesto Leal-Sotelo, Ignacio Hernandez-Rodriguez, José Francisco Flores-Gómez, Esperanza Milagros Garcia-Oropesa

Research Symposium

Currently our country has high numbers of missing persons, Tamaulipas being one of the states with the highest rate of disappearances. The identification of people has become more important thanks to the development of molecular techniques. However, the limitations are very high, because it is necessary to compare the genetic pattern of the disappeared with the parents. Therefore, the objective of this research is to standardize a genomic DNA extraction technique from contact surfaces for its subsequent implementation in the identification of disappeared, allowing the comparison of the genetic pattern with the disappeared itself. For this, genomic DNA extraction was …

Methodological Challenges In Studying Trust In Natural Resources Management, Antonia Sohns, Gordon M. Hickey, Jasper R. De Vries, Owen Temby

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Trust has been identified as a central characteristic of successful natural resource management (NRM), particularly in the context of implementing participatory approaches to stakeholder engagement. Trust is, however, a multi-dimensional and multi-level concept that is known to evolve recursively through time, challenging efforts to empirically measure its impact on collaboration in different NRM settings. In this communication we identify some of the challenges associated with conceptualizing and operationalizing trust in NRM field research, and pay particular attention to the inter-relationships between the concepts of trust, perceived risk and control due to their multidimensional and interacting roles in inter-organizational collaboration. The …

Evo Morales And Electoral Fraud In Bolivia: A Natural Experiment And Discontinuity Evidence, Diego Escobari, Gary A. Hoover

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper uses a unique data set and a natural experiment based on the shutdown in the official preliminary vote counting system to identify and estimate the size of electoral fraud in the 2019 Bolivian presidential elections. The 2016 Constitutional Referendum and the participation of other political parties serve as controls to estimate various difference-in-differences and difference-in-difference-in-differences specifications. The results show evidence of a statistically significant electoral case of fraud that increased the votes of the incumbent Movimiento al Socialismo and decreased the votes of the runner up Comunidad Ciudadana. We estimate that the extent of the fraud is 2.50% …

Parental Incarceration And Social Status Attainment Of Hispanic Young Adults, Igor Ryabov Feb 2019

Parental Incarceration And Social Status Attainment Of Hispanic Young Adults, Igor Ryabov

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The fact that parental incarceration has become a common event in the life course of many children is troubling. Using structural equation modeling, the present study investigates how immigrant generational status and family socioeconomic background interact with parental incarceration to influence status attainment for Hispanic young adults. Three indicators of status attainment in young adulthood are used as outcome variables—educational attainment, wage, and job quality. Results indicate that parental incarceration has a strong and negative influence on all three indicators of attained status. Most importantly, we found that parental incarceration mediates influence of immigrant generational status and family socioeconomic background …

A Study Of Juror Information On The Websites Of 61 Predominately Hispanic Texas Counties, Irma S. Jones, Dianna Blankenship, Marcus Juarez Jan 2014

A Study Of Juror Information On The Websites Of 61 Predominately Hispanic Texas Counties, Irma S. Jones, Dianna Blankenship, Marcus Juarez

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Constitution does not require a jury of twelve men and women t o be representative of America’s diverse ethnic, racial, and economic groups (Donaldson v. California, 1971). Although there is concern whether prospective juror pools emulate shifting racial and ethnic populations, (Fukari, 1996), it is unconstitutional to use “race conscious means” to create a racially balanced jury pool. (United States v. Ovalle, 1998). The U.S. Hispanic population grew from 9.1 million in 1970 to 35.3 million in 2000, an increase of nearly four times, and 53 million in 2012, an increase of nearly six times (Pew Research Center, 2014). …

The Only Thing That Stops A Guy With A Bad Policy Is A Guy With A Good Policy: An Examination Of The Nra’S “National School Shield” Proposal, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews, Catherine E. Burton Jan 2013

The Only Thing That Stops A Guy With A Bad Policy Is A Guy With A Good Policy: An Examination Of The Nra’S “National School Shield” Proposal, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews, Catherine E. Burton

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, the public and the government are looking for solutions to school violence. The National Rifle Association (NRA), a Second Amendment, pro-gun advocacy group, has proposed an “education and training emergency response program” called The National School Shield, which advocates the placement of armed security in schools. Although the program sounds provocative, serious questions complicate its plausibility, necessity, motive, and effectiveness. Furthermore, the potential policy and practical ramifications of encouraging armed security forces in U.S. schools are complex. The authors examined the proposal’s key elements from a public policy …

Analysis Of Bankruptcy Law Provisions In New Member Eu Countries: Global Competitive Strategy Implications For Multinational Corporations, Francis J. Brewerton, Jane Lemaster

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications and Presentations

Globalization has been responsible for a number of ongoing interrelated trends including an accelerated worldwide movement toward economic integration, an ongoing proliferation of new multinational corporations, a widening search for new economic opportunities by multinational corporations, and an increasing concern for and attention to bankruptcy as a contingency strategy for multinational corporations when primary strategies catastrophically fail. The economic benefits associated with the removal of trade barriers is also attracting new member countries to the EU and other trading blocks but these new member countries’ bankruptcy law provisions may have uncertain contingency strategy implications for MNC’s.

Juror Information On The Web: A Study Of Hispanic Populated Texas Counties, Irma S. Jones, Janna Arney, Dianna Blankenship Jan 2003

Juror Information On The Web: A Study Of Hispanic Populated Texas Counties, Irma S. Jones, Janna Arney, Dianna Blankenship

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

In response to the initiative of providing juror education materials online, this study proposes that unless Web sites are designed in a usable fashion, this initiative could fail to enhance jury response and further aggravate the problem of underrepresentation by minorities. This study suggests that all online juror information Web sites be analyzed for “usability” and “design” if they are to be an effective education tool. In addition, this study proposes to compare responses to county Web sites in order to gauge bias responses of participants to their own county’s Web site vs. other county Web sites.

Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews Aug 2000

Juvenile Gangs In Schools: Characteristics, Causes, And Possible Solutions, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this seminar is to acquaint participants with the ever-changing characteristics, often conflicting issues of causation, and various proposed solutions to the myriad of problems associated with gangs in schools. Special attention is given to the evolving nature of gangs in K-12 educational institutions (e.g., new types of juvenile groups developing and their associated behavior). Traditional subjects such as gang recruitment, initiation, and criminal activity are examined by discussing the many ways they manifest themselves in the school setting. Finally, a conceptual framework is presented by which a school can identify, understand, and begin to address a potential …
