Testimony On Oklahoma Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform, Stephen Henderson

I am grateful for the opportunity to speak to you today about Senate Bill 838 and the reform of Oklahoma’s civil asset forfeiture. I am a professor of law at the University of Oklahoma, where my teaching and research focus on criminal law and procedure. I have experience achieving consensus solutions in contested areas of law, most notably in the six years I spent drafting a new set of ABA Criminal Justice Standards, and I know that change is rarely easy. Social License To Operate: Hydraulic Fracturing-Related Challenges Facing The Oil & Gas Industry, Don C. Smith, Jessica M. Richards

Oil and Gas, Natural Resources, and Energy Journal

The crossroads of urban development and improved technology allowing oil and gas development in new areas can result in contentious community issues. The debate over one of the improved technologies – i.e., hydraulic fracturing – can be highly emotional. Consequently, industry must address community issues, earning trust and therefore a “social license to operate.” This paper provides fundamental knowledge of the social license to operate concept, validates its application to the oil and gas industry, particularly with respect to shale gas development, discusses the current status of social license in the unconventional development sphere, analyzes current ongoing efforts for shale …

Paint Chip Indians, M. Alexander Pearl Jan 2015

Paint Chip Indians, M. Alexander Pearl

Faculty Articles

This essay is a follow up to a previous article “How to Be an Authentic Indian” published in November of 2014 in the California Law Review Circuit. (M. Alexander Pearl, How to Be an Authentic Indian, 5 Cal. L. Rev. Circuit 392 (November 2014). With the current media emphasis on the controversy over recent representations of Indians in television and film (such as Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the Adam Sandler written/directed Ridiculous Six), the essay is topical and examines the critiques …

But, if the groundwater aquifer used to grow soybeans and other foods is exhausted and no water remains for extraction, then individuals, families, and entire communities perish. Present commons scholarship is unable to differentiate between varying levels of …
