Wojtylan Insight Into Love And Friendship: Shared Consciousness And The Breakdown Of Solidarity, Scott Fitzgibbon Dec 2001

Wojtylan Insight Into Love And Friendship: Shared Consciousness And The Breakdown Of Solidarity, Scott Fitzgibbon

Scott T. FitzGibbon

There is a fundamental clash in contemporary society between, on the one hand, an orthodox Christian understanding of human dignity and of what is required of us if we are to respect and honour the dignity of every human being and, on the other hand, a secularist vision of human existence. In his great Encyclical Evangelium Vitae, 'The Gospel of Life', Pope John Paul II identified as the practical expression of this clash the conflict between what he called the 'culture of life' and the 'culture of death'. The present volume explores the roots of the two cultures, contemporary manifestations …

An Integrated Computational Model Of Multiparty Electoral Competition, Kevin Quinn, Andrew Martin Dec 2001

An Integrated Computational Model Of Multiparty Electoral Competition, Kevin Quinn, Andrew Martin

Kevin M. Quinn

Most theoretic models of multiparty electoral competition make the assumption that party leaders are motivated to maximize their vote share or seat share. In plurality-rule systems this is a sensible assumption. However, in proportional representation systems, this assumption is questionable since the ability to make public policy is not strictly increasing in vote shares or seat shares. We present a theoretic model in which party leaders choose electoral declarations with an eye toward the expected policy outcome of the coalition bargaining game induced by the party declarations and the parties’ beliefs about citizens’ voting behavior. To test this model, we …

The Financial Impact Of Over-The-Counter Availability Of Oral Contraceptive Pills, Mingfang Zhu, Albert Wertheimer, Robert Field Dec 2001

The Financial Impact Of Over-The-Counter Availability Of Oral Contraceptive Pills, Mingfang Zhu, Albert Wertheimer, Robert Field

Robert I. Field

The oral contraceptive pill has been safely and effectively used for over 40 years. It seems reasonable to ask whether the pill should be made available over-the-counter (OTC) without a physician's prescription. If so, what will be the subsequent change in cost due to OTC pill availability? A cost-effectiveness model was adapted and modified to estimate the current contraceptive methods' cost and OTC pill availability cost. The possible changes from other contraceptive methods to the use of a potential OTC pill were assumed in this study. Using a predictive model, it was found that in the United States alone, nearly …

Adjudicative Competence In The Modern Juvenile Court, Richard E. Redding Dec 2001

Adjudicative Competence In The Modern Juvenile Court, Richard E. Redding

Richard E. Redding

In recent years, as juvenile justice systems across the country have become more punitive and courts have held that juveniles are entitled to adult-like levels of due process protection, the adjudicative competence of juveniles has increasingly come into question. To clarify this trend, we reviewed the current state of the law in the fifty states and the District of Columbia, focusing on recent court opinions and legislation as of January of 2000. We then summarize relevant empirical research on juveniles' competency-related capacities in delinquency proceedings. As a case study, we examine the development and implementation of juvenile competence legislation in …

Major Terrestrial Causes Of Marine Coastal Pollution: A Critique Of Current Regulation And The Suggestion Of An Alternative Approach To Regulation, Chad J. Mcguire Dec 2001

Major Terrestrial Causes Of Marine Coastal Pollution: A Critique Of Current Regulation And The Suggestion Of An Alternative Approach To Regulation, Chad J. Mcguire

Chad J McGuire

The purpose of this article is to identify agricultural operations as the major source of marine pollution, and present an argument for an alternate regulatory mechanism to properly control these sources. First, causes of marine pollution will be identified. Then, existing federal regulations will be reviewed and criticized. Some emphasis will be placed on §303 of the CWA, and the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program suggested by EPA. It will be used as a case study to show why ambient-based regulations are ineffective at controlling pollution sources. Limitations on other regulatory programs will be identified and explained. An alternate …
