Defendant was subpoenaed in connection with a grand jury investigation of gambling and corruption of public officials. He had been retained by one 'Willie" Moretti as attorney for five of his associates in October, 1950 after a complaint charging a gambling conspiracy had been filed against them. During some two hundred conferences with Moretti in the following year, defendant learned that protection money was being paid to certain high ranking state officials, Moretti at one point complaining of the frequent demands of these officials for more· money. Moretti also discussed with defendant a visit he had paid to the home …

Vanderbilt Law Review
Few topics are currently more at the center of both interest and need than that of Dr. Stumpf's new book. The ship of democracy is being tossed by heavy seas. Many are looking for a haven of faith. They tell us that the ship cannot stay afloat unless it reaches the well-protected harbor of religion. It needs at least to be overhauled, they say, and made more seaworthy in that harbor before it braves again the heavy onslaughts which it must necessarily breast. Dr. Stumpf probes too deeply into the relation between democracy and religion, however, to fall prey to …

We have just finished our 77th annual meeting of the American Bar Association. This meeting has, of course, been unique and unusually gratifying in that it was the occasion of dedicating the American Bar Center in which is lodged the American Bar Association's new headquarters and the American Bar Foundation research and library headquarters. You have all heard of this glorious accomplishment and every one who was there, I am sure, was thrilled because of the dignity, simplicity, and impressiveness of the ceremonies.

The Libraries Of The Legal Profession: A Study Prepared For The Survey Of The Legal Profession, By William R. Roalfe (1953), Marian G. Gallagher
Washington Law Review
The statistics, and the author's conclusions, make good bolstering material because they are as authoritative as it is possible to obtain. Mr. Roalfe has a fine reputation among lawyers and librarians as a law library oracle, partly because of this training and experience, and partly because he never seems to have an axe to grind. He will tell you where he stands personally, and then proceed to outline arguments on both sides of the question. In preparing this Survey, he has deviated from form only in limiting expression of personal opinion to the minimum which must creep into any author's …

Petitioner was a member of a firm of lawyers engaged in general practice in Binghamton, New York. The firm did enough work in federal taxation to warrant petitioner's specializing in this field, and his partners relied upon him to keep abreast of all significant developments in tax law. Petitioner attended the Fifth Annual Institute on Federal Taxation, conducted in New York City under the sponsorship of New York University and designed exclusively for practitioners and specialists in the tax field. He incurred expenses for travel, board, lodging, and tuition, all of which he deducted as ordinary and necessary business expenses …

In an action for rescission for transfer of patent rights, for breach of warranty of title and fraud, a pretrial examination of defendant's agent, as one familiar with facts concerning the transfer, was ordered by the court. Defendant objected to certain questions on the ground that the agent was in the status of attorney to defendant and that the matters in question were confidential communications protected from disclosure by the common law and statutory attorney-client privilege. The agent was a patent agent duly registered and authorized to practice as such before the United States Patent Office, but was not admitted …
