One Student’S Thoughts On Law School Clinics, Jeffrey Ward
One Student’S Thoughts On Law School Clinics, Jeffrey Ward
Faculty Scholarship
Law school offers few opportunities for students to move beyond the ink and paper law of textbooks to see the actual effects of real law on real communities. Because law school clinics offer a rare opportunity for students to see the real and imperfect law-in-action, the import of immersive clinical experiences on the education of tomorrow's lawyers is inestimable. Through clinics, students learn how the law really works, witness its power and its shortcomings, and ideally begin to envision what shape the law ought to take. Expressing a student's perspective on how to make the most of the extraordinary opportunity …

Supporting Scholarship: Thoughts On The Role Of The Academic Law Librarian, Richard A. Danner
Faculty Scholarship
Discussing the role of the law library in legal education is necessary and essential, both because of the demands libraries place on increasingly tight law school budgets and space, and the challenges that libraries face as the information they collect and organize has moved largely from print to digital formats. This paper explores the roles of academic law librarians in supporting faculty scholarship within the context of the forces affecting libraries, librarians, and legal education in the (still early) twenty-first century. Although it has been more than 30 years since the widespread adoption of the legal research databases in the …

Skating With Donovan: Thoughts On Librarianship As A Profession, Richard A. Danner

James M. Donovan’s article: Skating on Thin Intermediation: Can Libraries Survive?, 27 Legal Reference Services Q. 95 (no. 2-3, 2008) argues that librarians place more emphasis than they might on providing service to library users at a time when information seekers are relying less on intermediaries, and that over-emphasizing service to the detriment of other values diminishes the status of librarianship as a profession. The article presents two contrasting models of librarianship. This article discusses Donovan’s models and comments on the continuing importance of the service model to librarianship.

Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner
Applying The Access Principle In Law: The Responsibilities Of The Legal Scholar, Richard A. Danner
Faculty Scholarship
This article applies to legal scholarship the ideas developed and argued in John Willinsky’s 2006 book: 'The Access Principle: The Case for Open Access to Research and Scholarship' regarding the responsibilities of scholars to make their works widely available through open access mechanisms via the Internet. Willinsky’s access principle states that “A commitment to the value and quality of research carries with it a responsibility to extend the circulation of such work as far as possible and ideally to all who are in interested in it and all who might profit by it.” For Willinsky, the transformation of scholarly journals …

On March 10, 2006, the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender, Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, and Harvard Law Review co-sponsored a conference, "Results: Legal Education, Institutional Change, and a Decade of Gender Studies," to address the number of student experience studies that detail women's lower performance in and dissatisfaction with law school. Rather than advocate for a particular set of responses to the different experiences of men and women in legal education , this conference sought to foster a discussion about the institutional challenges these patterns highlight. As a means of accomplishing this end, law school deans from …

Professionalism And Student Protest, Paul D. Carrington

The attributes of professionalism, which are the hallmark of the lawyer's calling, can be used to help institutions and the public understand and effectively deal with student protest and disorder. An unruffled, low keyed reaction is needed in most cases with the law's processes reserved for occasions that cannot be handled as intramural clashes.
