Hiv And Women: Incongruent Policies, Criminal Consequences, Aziza Ahmed

Aziza Ahmed

The new agency UN WOMEN must play an active role in the standardization of laws and policies at the global and national level where their incongruence has negative and often criminal consequences for the health and lives of women and girls. This article focuses in on three such examples: opt-out testing for HIV, criminalization of vertical transmission, and the new World Health Organization guidelines on breastfeeding.

Teaching Controversial Topics, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid Dec 2010

Teaching Controversial Topics, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid

Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid

At the 2009 Future of Family Law Education conference at the William Mitchell School of Law, the authors participated in a panel discussing strategies for teaching controversial topics, which focused on teaching reproductive rights and related gender issues. This essay collects some of the strategies discussed at the conference. First we address what constitutes a “controversial” legal topic, outlining the several different ways in which a topic might be or become controversial within the context of a particular class. Next, we discuss the importance of laying the groundwork, throughout the semester, for the anticipated—and unanticipated— discussions surrounding controversial topics and …

What Is Due To Others: Speaking And Signifying Subject(S) Of Rape Law, Penelope Pether Dec 2008

What Is Due To Others: Speaking And Signifying Subject(S) Of Rape Law, Penelope Pether

Penelope J Pether

Australian journalist Paul Sheehan's representation of the alleged and convicted immigrant Muslim/Arab rapists he demonises in Girls Like You, like his representation of the rape survivors in that text, has much to tell us about the law's production of rape law's speaking and signifying subjects, "real rape" victims and survivors, false accusers and perpetrators. This article uses a variety of texts, including Girls Like You, recent Australian rape law jurisprudence and legislative reform, texts involving two controversial recent US rape cases — one from Maryland and one from Nebraska — and a recent UK study on attrition in rape prosecutions, …

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker Dec 2005

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker

Donna M. Zucker

Although the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in women is only slightly less than in men, women are poorly represented in research trials. As a result, not much is known about them as a subgroup. The specific aims of this article were to report on the problem, study methods, and findings focusing on HCV-positive women's health beliefs, how they identify and understand their health and illness states, and their explanatory models of illness behavior. A pilot study using three focus groups was conducted with women in the community, in recovery, and incarcerated. Two groups emerged: those with and those …

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The termination of a collegiate athletic career is inevitable for all student athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceptions of the athletic career transition process. One-hundred-andforty- three (n = 143) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II student athletes were administered the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) designed by the authors. The LASS is a 58-item mixed method inventory. The scope of this inquiry explored the qualitative section, which examined participants’ perceptions that were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete who made the transition out of collegiate sport successfully. Three major …
