Collective Hindsight: A Review Of The Grass Roots Primer, Jenifer Robison Oct 1975

Collective Hindsight: A Review Of The Grass Roots Primer, Jenifer Robison

IUSTITIA

What do you do when the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers announces that its solution to the hurricane "problem" in New York (four major hurricanes in 200 years) is to build a wall around Coney Island? How do you fight it when a local landowner secures a zoning variance so he can open a game farm whose main access (for its projected 300,000 visitors in 100,000 cars) is the only street in your tiny village? In the days before the citizen's suit provisions of the present environmental laws there was very little recourse for people outraged by plans like …

Community Control: Rebuttal, Chester Smolski Oct 1975

Community Control: Rebuttal, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The problem of fire was very real to the early settlers of this country. For this reason, in 1626, it was decreed that thatched roofs on houses no longer would be allowed in the Plymouth Colony. Early New York, in 1648, stipulated that wooden chimenys no longer could be built on houses. These were early attempts at control over individuals by the community, in this case, for fire protection.

The Fairness Doctrine And Pro-Natalism In Television, Myra Spicker Apr 1974

The Fairness Doctrine And Pro-Natalism In Television, Myra Spicker

IUSTITIA

It is a premise of this paper that television reflects a pro-natalist bias in its promotion of the traditional female role in society, and that such bias is evident in both commercial advertisements as well as in dramatic presentations particularly on daytime television. Those who are opposed to a pro-natalist point of view will find it virtually impossible to air their opposition effectively. At best anti-natalist groups may be able to garner only meager financial resources to air spot commercials, but this is hardly adequate to combat the subtle onslaught of the opposition. Suggestions have been made that pro-natalist attitudes …

Literature And Law: How The Literary Quality Of A Political Statement Has Affected The Development Of Law In Tanzania, Robert L. Scott Apr 1973

Literature And Law: How The Literary Quality Of A Political Statement Has Affected The Development Of Law In Tanzania, Robert L. Scott

IUSTITIA

The purpose of this inquiry is to demonstrate how the literary qualities of a political statement have contributed to the legal and economic development of an African nation.

It is my contention that a literary statement* is a useful tool in representing the process of events in a manner which reproduces the quality and character of the underlying reality. This more accurate reality is derived from the perspective of the artist who writes out of an experience common to his people, even though his expression is essentially a personal one: he writes according to his own sensibilities and is not …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Political And Legal Speeches Of Robert B. Crosby, Gilbert F. Nykodym Ii May 1968

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Political And Legal Speeches Of Robert B. Crosby, Gilbert F. Nykodym Ii

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I first saw Robert Crosby as a lawyer defending Duane Pope in November 1965. I was intensely interested in the Pope trial for a number of reasons. I was interested because, first, as a law student I found the legal points of interest, second, one of my law professors, Wallace Rudolph, was serving as an assistant defense counsel in the trial and, third, having a bachelors degree in speech I wanted to see what part speaking played in this trial.

As I began graduate work in speech I took a course entitled Rhetorical Criticism under Dr. Donald O. Olson. I …

George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins Jul 1957

George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The people of forty-seven states in this country are governed by bicameral or two-house legislatures. The people of the forty-eighth, Nebraskans, are governed by a unicameral or one-house legislature.

On November 6, 1934, the people of Nebraska provided by amendment to their state constitution, a one-house legislature to be composed of between thirty and fifty members to be elected on a non-partisan ballot. The number of solons was later set at forty-three, and 1957 marked the twentieth anniversary of the first unicameral session in Nebraska.

Senator George W. Norris is generally regarded by all as the father of the unicameral …
