Teaching Ethics In An Atmosphere Of Skepticism And Relativism, W. Bradley Wendel Apr 2002

Teaching Ethics In An Atmosphere Of Skepticism And Relativism, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

I would like to do several things in this essay. First, I am interested in the sources of students' wariness about moral reasoning and claims about objectivity and truth in ethics. Sometimes I feel like a teacher of geography who must confront a deeply entrenched belief that the earth is flat. The earth is not flat, nor is ethics just a matter of opinion, but one wonders why students persist in thinking the opposite. Teaching effectively requires an understanding of where students are coming from. Accordingly, the opening section of this essay is structured around a series of hypotheses to …

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley Apr 2002

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Here is what we got. The people in charge -- faculty, college administrators, trustees, other intellectual elites, and (judging by what they do) the bishops -- do not believe what they need to believe to restore Catholic education to the colleges: that a Catholic education is better because the faith is true. This I call the Indispensable Conviction. It is the pearl of great price. Our leaders no longer possess it. And, without a Catholic education, our magnificent campuses are like whited sepulchers.

Is the status quo really so dire? What does the next generation portend? Can demand for …

Latinos In Massachusetts: Legal Immigration To New England During The 1990s, Enrico A. Marcelli

Gastón Institute Publications

This fact sheet summarizes information about legal immigration flows to the New England Region during the 1990s employing Immigration and Naturalization Service data. Although the annual number of legal permanent residents (e.g., green card holders) from Latin America and the Caribbean fell during the decade, as a percent of all legal immigrants who settled in New England their representation rose. Among all Latin American and Caribbean immigrants who settled in the region, more than half chose Massachusetts or Connecticut. And although most reported working in lower-skilled occupations, from 10 percent to 30 percent of immigrants from each c o u …

Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale Jan 2002

Two Concepts Of Immortality: Reframing Public Debate On Stem-Cell Research, Frank Pasquale

Faculty Scholarship

Regenerative medicine seeks not only to cure disease, but also to arrest the aging process itself. So far, public attention to the new health care has focused on two of its methods: embryonic stem-cell research and therapeutic cloning. Since both processes manipulate embryos, they alarm those who believe life begins at conception. Such religious objections have dominated headlines on the topic, and were central to President George W. Bush's decision to restrict stem-cell research.

Although they are now politically potent, the present religious objections to regenerative medicine will soon become irrelevant. Scientists are fast developing new ways of culturing the …

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil. Jan 2002

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

The tensions between religions and political systems have been evident in intellectual and cultural contexts throughout human experience. In past ages, there has been a propensity for each culture or religion to assume that it embodied the best in every aspect of the human order. There is no longer any excuse for such narrowness spawned of ignorance to dominate the thinking of educated people. Yet mere tolerance of other approaches to the common challenges of humanity will not provide security for all, especially for minorities within a culture or for weaker societies in a given region striving to maintain their …

Force And Colonial Development In Eastern Uganda, Carol Summers Jan 2002

Force And Colonial Development In Eastern Uganda, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

This article explores why and how administrators and missionaries in Eastern Uganda came to associate progress and development with the need to whip, coerce, and imprison women, developing new institutions for the violent control of wives that went far beyond more common patterns of informal patriarchal control. New Native Courts took over from husbands in arranging for troublesome wives to be whipped. New mission associations of church, teachers’ and evangelists’ groups, and church men’s groups worked to establish Christian patriarchal control over wives who rejected husbands and Christ. Both officials and missionaries understood clearly that the government and missions needed …

Anna Marie Smith On Welfare Reform And Sexual Regulation, Richard Blum

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

"Why is 'welfare reform' a queer issue?" That question was posed to a gathering of New York-based social services and LGBTQ advocates a couple of years ago at a meeting that launched the Queer Economic Justice Network (QEJN). Since then, QEJN has reached out to mainstream LGBTQ organizations to help them recognize the myriad ways that "welfare reform" has harmed poor queers.

Osmotic Borders: Thinking Locally, Thinking Globally About The Causes And Effects Of Labor Migration, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 2002

Osmotic Borders: Thinking Locally, Thinking Globally About The Causes And Effects Of Labor Migration, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus defines osmosis both as "any process by which something is acquired by absorption," and as a biological cellular function by which solvents are absorbed through semipermeable partitions. The two articles by Professor Sylvia Lazos and Donna Maeda, which both deal with the causes and effects of labor migration, though on different levels and involving different populations, challenge traditional notions of the physical and metaphysical borders between nation-states.

In "Latina/o-ization" of the Midwest: Cambio de Colores, Professor Sylvia Lazos takes a close look at the increasing migration and presence of Latinas/os in the Midwest, particularly Kansas, …

Bibliography Of Hate Materials, Elizabeth Thweatt Jan 2002

Bibliography Of Hate Materials, Elizabeth Thweatt

Journal of Hate Studies

Interest in working on this bibliography stems from involvement with the Collection Development Committee of the Institute for Action Against Hate at Gonzaga University as we sought to create a collection of materials to support study and research. Not being able to find a bibliography in print suggested that an annotated one would be valuable. Defining hate is problematic. Its scope is so broad that it touches almost all aspects of life and it dwells within the hearts and minds of each one of us. Although many of us cling subconsciously to it, hate harms and sometimes kills its victims. …

Islamic Banking And Takaful : The Development And Future Challenges In Malaysia, Jalaludin Mohd Noor, Khairuddin Hanafiah Jan 2002

Islamic Banking And Takaful : The Development And Future Challenges In Malaysia, Jalaludin Mohd Noor, Khairuddin Hanafiah

Student Works (2000-2009)

The establishment of the Mil Ghamr Local Savings Bank of Egypt in 1963 marked a new milestone in the development of Islamic banking system. The interest-free banking concepts introduced by Mil Ghamr signaled to the Muslim community that Islamic principles were applicable to modern day banking business. The government of Malaysia has been actively promoting Islamic banking with the view to have Islamic financial system operating side-by-side with the conventional interest-based system, Both are geared towards the nation's socioeconomic development goals. The establishment of Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad in 1983 was the first step towards this vision. Ten years later, …

This dissertation explains the contribution of Abu Yusuf in Islamic Finance based on his Kitab al-Kharaj in which he has been regarded as an outstanding Muslim thinker of Hanafi school of thought. In this work, Abu Yusuf highlighted the position of land taxation (al-kharaj) according to Islamic perspective. ln other words, it tries to view Islamic rulings concerning land tax, its procedures as well as its measurement. Hopefully it will assist in the implementation of land tax accordance with the spirit of Islam. Chapter one explains the background of Abu Yusuf, his teachers and writings. Chapter two mentions the theory …
