Regulatory Paradigms For Modern Breeding, Drew L. Kershen, Wayne A. Parrott
Drew L. Kershen
Modern breeding, based upon molecular biology using genetic information, has made rapid advances. Breeders using rDNA techniques properly can think of this technique as traditional biotechnology. Within the past ten years, breeders have begun to use newer techniques [site-directed nuclease techniques (SDNs), RNAi, and synthetic biology] to create and to develop plants and animals with desired genetic traits. In this chapter printed in the NABC 26 Report (May 2015), the authors address the question: What is the appropriate regulatory paradigm for modern breeding?

European Decisions About The 'Whack-A-Mole' Game, Drew L. Kershen
Drew L. Kershen
This article reports on several court decisions in Europe that illustrate the seemingly unending delays and barriers, within the EU structure, for genetically-engineered crops. Like the fun-park children’s game—wherein each time the player whacks a mole, another mole instantly pops to the surface so that the player must whack again—each time a producer of a GE crop appears to have approval for planting, another delay and barrier arises.

Concern about rising prices and unstable sources of petroleum fuels is driving the search for U.S. domestically produced, renewable transportation fuels, such as biodiesel. Federal incentives of up to $1.10 per gallon have been supplemented by additional incentives and mandated biodiesel use in many states. The Renewable Fuel Standard in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 requires the domestic use of 1 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel fuel by 2012, most of which likely will be biodiesel. U.S. biodiesel production is primarily from soybean oil, but recent high prices have forced many producers to use lower-cost feedstocks such …
