Optimization In The Application Of Varnishes Barrier On Cartonboard Packaging, Andre Ramalheiro De Andrade, Maria Isabel Rodrigues Phd, Eduardo Luiz Machado Phd

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

In this work adjustments in the rotogravure printing process are proposed to the varnish water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) aiming to obtain results smaller than 20g/m²/24h. One case study was used for the propositions for improvements, where focused on varnish application process in a gravure printer for an eight-printing unit cartonboard packaging, maximum printing speed of 175 m/min and a 285 g/m² weight cartonboard. The possible variables that influenced the WVTR result were selected from the technical expertise of the people involved in the project, the analysis in the printing process with the application of directed trials using experimental designs …

A Dynamic Programming Approach To Determine Optimum Modularity Level In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B Mar 2021

A Dynamic Programming Approach To Determine Optimum Modularity Level In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Modular packaging facilitate customization for accommodating variable product sizes in a product family. When determining package sizes for product variability, packaging engineers does not find difficulty to determine package dimension for less product variety whereas if the product variety is more, then determining the dimension of modular package involves complex decision-making and time-consuming process to find the optimal solution. This in turn directly impacts the overall lead time of the supply chain. Thus, in this paper a dynamic programming is developed to determine the quantity and dimension of modular packages for every demand of assorted products sizes. The program helps …

Development And Experimental Investigation Of Modular Crates For Industrial Packaging Applications, Marshal Louie, Kumar B Jan 2020

Development And Experimental Investigation Of Modular Crates For Industrial Packaging Applications, Marshal Louie, Kumar B

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

For the increased product varieties, engineered plywood crate production technique could not facilitate box size optimization. This paper investigates the implementation of modularity function onto the plywood crate to resize the pack cube volume on customer requirement and to reduce space wastage inside the box. This is achieved by using a new joint technique called “Flat- Post Tongue Joint”. The full-sized experimental work is carried out comprising Flexural test analysis on Flat-Post Tongue joint, Tensile test analysis on tongue joint and Box Compression Test analysis on the two developed models of modular crates namely Modifiable Reinforced Plywood Crate (MRPC) and …

A Design For Affordances Framework For Product Packaging: Food Packaging Case Study, Ahmad Abdelhafiz Mumani, Richard T. Stone, Esraa Abdelall Jan 2019

A Design For Affordances Framework For Product Packaging: Food Packaging Case Study, Ahmad Abdelhafiz Mumani, Richard T. Stone, Esraa Abdelall

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Since affordances provided by packaging features play a major role in facilitating user packaging interaction, it is important to integrate the concept of affordances into the packaging design process and to understand the interrelationships between packaging features and affordances. A framework is proposed for linking user requirements to packaging design features utilizing the concept of affordances. The framework is accomplished in two main steps; first, determine the affordances required to facilitate performing packaging-related tasks, and second, link these affordances to packaging features. Previous packaging usability studies were reviewed to elicit requirements in terms of affordance properties such as intuitiveness, responsiveness, …

Modular Crates – A Holistic Design Approach For Optimizing Cube Size In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B Sep 2018

Modular Crates – A Holistic Design Approach For Optimizing Cube Size In Industrial Packaging, Marshal Louie, Kumar B

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Global market is a field where all industries strive to provide personalized product for every customer demand in order to compete with their competitors in the business battlefield. Product personalization varies with customer to customer which increases the product variety. When the product size variability is vast, producing packages for every individual product is not only difficult but also increases the design time, production time, total manufacturing cost and inventory cost. For the present scenario, Industrial packages does not opt customizability for variable product sizes. Customized package for personalized product is achievable only by redesigning the existing distribution package with …

Communication And Biodegradable Packaging Relationship: A Paradigm For Final Disposal, Breno Luiz Ottoni, Rafael Mattos Deus, José Alcides Gobbo Junior, Ângela Maria Grossi De Carvalho, Rosane Aparecida Gomes Battistelle Mar 2018

Communication And Biodegradable Packaging Relationship: A Paradigm For Final Disposal, Breno Luiz Ottoni, Rafael Mattos Deus, José Alcides Gobbo Junior, Ângela Maria Grossi De Carvalho, Rosane Aparecida Gomes Battistelle

Solid waste generation is estimated to increase from 1.3 billion to 2.2 billion tons by 2025, causing environmental, social, and consequently public health problems. The biggest problem in this regard involves the inadequate disposal of waste, and in emerging countries like Brazil, it is sorted less waste for recycling or composting. In this context, plastic packaging is more complex due to the high polymer composition, as well as low recycling rates. Bioplastics appear as alternatives because they are mostly biodegradable. Given the various functions of packaging and a systematic review of the literature, the aim of this study was to …

Comparing Optimum Barrier Variables Of Aluminium And Mpet Foil Based Laminates For Coffee Packaging, Abhishek Dutta, Gautam Dutta Aug 2016

Comparing Optimum Barrier Variables Of Aluminium And Mpet Foil Based Laminates For Coffee Packaging, Abhishek Dutta, Gautam Dutta

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The barrier property variables for Aluminum based laminates, both under flexed and unflexed condition, were compared with that of MPET based laminates in order to understand comparative suitability of the later for coffee packaging. Keeping the expected shelf life condition of 180 days the different barrier property variables of the sample MPET and Aluminum based laminates, at the optimality condition, were found out. At the optimum condition, Oxygen transfer rate (OTR) under flexed condition is marginally better for MPET based laminates. However, Aluminium laminates in flexed condition allowing moisture transfer (WVTR) at the rate 24.32 percent stronger than MPET based …

Application Of Kansei Engineering To Tactile Sense In The Thai Food Wrapping Materials, Chaiwat Kittidecha, Ashuboda Chandrajith Marasinghe, Yamada Koichi Apr 2016

Application Of Kansei Engineering To Tactile Sense In The Thai Food Wrapping Materials, Chaiwat Kittidecha, Ashuboda Chandrajith Marasinghe, Yamada Koichi

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The paper investigates tactile attributes of food wrapping materials in Thailand based on Kansei Engineering and finds that 1) there are two major Kansei dimensions in tactile sense of food wrapping materials, 2) the emotion of "like" constitutes one of the two dimensions both with "smooth" and "natural", and 3) the most favorable wrapping material for Thai is "plastic foam" among nine different wrapping materials; plastic bag, aluminum foil, plastic film, paper, banana leaf, wax paper, plastic net, plastic air bubble and plastic foam. The study was conducted through a questionnaire that asked 6 pairs of emotions about samples; dislike …
