SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

While aerial shark spotting has been a standard practice for beach safety for decades, new technologies offer enhanced opportunities, ranging from drones/unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that provide new viewing capabilities, to new apps that provide beachgoers with up-to-date risk analysis before entering the water. This report describes the Sharkeye platform, a first-of-its-kind project to demonstrate personal shark alerting for beachgoers in the water and on land, leveraging innovative UAV image collection, cloud-hosted machine learning detection algorithms, and reporting via smart wearables. To execute, our team developed a novel detection algorithm trained via machine learning based on aerial footage of real …

Novel Dtn Mobility-Driven Routing In Autonomous Drone Logistics Networks, Saeid Iranmanesh, Raad Raad, Muhammad Salman Raheel, Faisel Em M Tubbal, Tony Jan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Drones have become prevalent for the delivery of goods by many retail companies such as Amazon and Dominos. Amazon has an issued patent that describes how drones scan and collect data on their fly-overs while dropping off packages. In this context, we propose a path optimization algorithm for a drone multi-hop communications network that can carry and forward data in addition to its primary function of parcel deliveries. We argue that traditional Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) based protocols may not be efficient for this purpose. Therefore, this paper proposes a new DTN-based algorithm that optimizes drone flight paths in conjunction …

Symmetries And Solutions Of The Non-Autonomous Von Bertalanffy Equation, Maureen P. Edwards, R Anderssen Jan 2015

Symmetries And Solutions Of The Non-Autonomous Von Bertalanffy Equation, Maureen P. Edwards, R Anderssen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

For growth in a closed environment, which is indicative of the situation in laboratory experiments, autonomous ODE models do not necessarily capture the dynamics under investigation. The importance and impact of a closed environment arise when the question under examination relates, for example, to the number of the surviving microbes, such as in a study of the spoilage and contamination of food, the gene silencing activity of fungi or the production of a chemical compound by bacteria or fungi. Autonomous ODE models are inappropriate as they assume that only the current size of the population controls the growth-decay dynamics. This …

Autonomous Thin Spray-On Liner Application In Irregular Tunnel And Mine Roadway Surfaces, M P. Tibbs, O K. Tyler, S Van Duin, E Baafi Jan 2013

Autonomous Thin Spray-On Liner Application In Irregular Tunnel And Mine Roadway Surfaces, M P. Tibbs, O K. Tyler, S Van Duin, E Baafi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An autonomous spray application system for a structural Thin Spray-on Liner (TSL) is targeting productivity and safety on underground coal continuous miners by replacing steel mesh, and has broader applications as surface support and confinement in metalliferous mines and civil tunnelling. Polymer chemistry, coating formulation, geotechnical assessment and the autonomous application system are being developed within an integrated package as part of a continuous miner automation project. The polymer-based TSL system, dubbed "ToughSkin", has significant benefits over conventional steel mesh, including; more automatable by spray application, complete skin confinement, active skin reinforcement as a fast-curing composite with substrate, and effective …

Q-Learning Algorithm For Navigation Control Of Autonomous Blimp, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David A. Stirling, Fazel Naghdy Jan 2009

Q-Learning Algorithm For Navigation Control Of Autonomous Blimp, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David A. Stirling, Fazel Naghdy

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In this research, an autonomous control system for blimp navigation was developed using reinforcement learning algorithm. The aim of this research is to provide a blimp the capability to approach a goal position autonomously in an environment, where the dynamical models of the blimp and the environment are unknown. Webots™ Robotics Simulator (WRS) was used to simulate and evaluate the control strategy obtained through a one-step Q-learning method. The simulation data generated via WRS were then processed and analysed within MATLAB. The simulation results showed that the control policy acquired from Q-learning is much more effective compared to the traditional …

Control Of Autonomous Airship, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David A. Stirling, Fazel Naghdy Jan 2009

Control Of Autonomous Airship, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David A. Stirling, Fazel Naghdy

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Scientific research and development on the control of autonomous airship have shown a significant growth in recent years. New applications appear in the areas such as freight carrier, advertising, monitoring, surveillance, transportation, military and scientific research. The control of Autonomous airship is a very important problem for the aerial robots research. In this paper, the previous research on the control of autonomous blimp is reviewed, Several popular control methods are categorized and discussed in detail. Then an intelligent navigation control method, reinforcement learning control, is introduced in the autonomous blimp which was used for 2007 UAV Outback Challenge. The future …

Mat: A Mobile Agent System For Supporting Autonomous Mobile Agents, Wei Li, Minjie Zhang Jan 2001

Mat: A Mobile Agent System For Supporting Autonomous Mobile Agents, Wei Li, Minjie Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Mobile Agent Template (MAT) is a mobile agent system that is under study and development at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and sponsored by the University of Wollongong, Australia. MAT is not an alternative to other mobile agent systems, but is an agent system that can provide the autonomy to mobile agents. MAT tries to support new Web applications, such as the mobile computation, by autonomous and mobile agents. Mobile Thread Programming Model (MTPM), Distributed Task Plan (DTP) and Active State Space (ASS) are integral components on which MAT is constructed. Integration of these three components …
