Estimation Of Hybrid Power Source Operation Efficiency Based On Generalized Indicators, Sh.N. Nematov, U.T. Mukhamedkhanov, N.N. Sadullaev
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The article substantiates the need to develop generalized indicators to assess the effectiveness of complex systems as "smart" networks. For a comprehensive and objective assessment of the microgrid operation efficiency, studies conducted world-wide aimed at creation of a single efficiency indicator by generalizing indicators of energy efficiency are analyzed. The priority area of research is development of a generalized indicator of the relative normalization of performance indicators and determination of a rational order of ranking these indicators in order of importance. For selection and ranking of indicators, we use the method of “expert assessments”. When choosing indicators, the "minimum of …

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are currently being deployed at an accelerated rate because of their cost-competitiveness and environmental benefits, which make them a prime candidate for local renewable energy generation in communities. Microgrids can help accommodate for the problems that accompany PV systems, such as intermittency due to weather, by coordinating different distributed energy resources (DERs), while islanded or by drawing power from the utility while in grid-connected mode. An islanding option is also important for resilience and grid fault mitigation, even if other DERs are not present within the system. This paper studies the potential benefits that a multi-MW …

Optimization Of Union College’S Microgrid To Meet All Load With A Least-Cost, Low-Carbon Energy Mix, Caitlin Mcmahon
Honors Theses
A microgrid is a localized electric grid that generates some or all of the power used to meet its load. Union College currently has a microgrid that meets 70 percent of the campus’ load and is connected to the main grid. It is made up of a cogeneration plant as well as solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, which are renewable energy sources. The goal of this project is to determine the least cost, low-carbon energy mix that meets 100 percent of the campus’ load. The issue with solar and wind power is that they are variable based on time …

Honors Scholar Theses
The purpose of this project is to design a clean energy-sourced microgrid for UConn’s main campus that would reduce the university’s energy emissions while remaining within the geographic boundaries of viable UConn-owned land. Economic cost was not considered in this analysis; instead, emissions and space constraints were the optimized measures of value and feasibility. Sources of energy that were considered include photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines, hydrokinetic systems, and fuel cells. Energy storage capacity was included in the analysis as well. The overall system was optimized first by ignoring space constraints and for a minimum of 10% reduction from the current …

Artificial Intelligent Based Energy And Demand Side Management For Microgrids And Smart Homes Considering Customer Privacy, Ahmed F. Ebrahim
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rapid development of various power electronics applications facilitates the integration of many smart grid applications in recent years. However, integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, highly stochastic electric vehicles (EVs) activities on the grid and time-varying smart loads have increased the level of grid vulnerability to unusual and high complexity and quality-related problems. Among these problems is to accurately estimate the real contribution and consumption of household loads, in the era of smart appliances and interoperability operation, and its relative impact to the grid’s operation. Specifically, household loads represent a significant percentage of electrical energy consumption and, therefore, could …

Modern smart homes are being equipped with certain renewable energy resources that can produce their own electric energy. From time to time, these smart homes or microgrids are also capable of supplying energy to other houses, buildings, or energy grid in the time of available self-produced renewable energy. Therefore, researches have been carried out to develop optimal trading strategies, and many recent technologies are also being used in combination with microgrids. One such technology is blockchain, which works over decentralized distributed ledger. In this paper, we develop a blockchain based approach for microgrid energy auction. To make this auction more …

A microgrid consists of electrical generation sources, energy storage assets, loads, and the ability to function independently, or connect and share power with other electrical grids. Thefocus of this work is on the behavior of a microgrid, with both diesel generator and photovoltaic resources, whose heating or cooling loads are influenced by local meteorological conditions. Themicrogrid's fuel consumption and energy storage requirement were then examined as a function of the atmospheric conditions used by its energy management strategy (EMS). A fuel-optimal EMS, able to exploit meteorological forecasts, was developed and evaluated using a hybrid microgrid simulation. Weather forecast update periods …

This paper presents the design of an extended parameterisations of H∞ controller for off grid operation of a microgrid. The microgrid consists of distributed generation units, filters and local loads. The filters are used to achieve accurate sinusoidal output voltage. However, loads which are connected to the microgrid are parametrically uncertain. Hence, it undergoes with unknown loads uncertainties. These unknown loads may create unknown loads harmonics, non-linearities which may reduce the voltage and current profile of the microgrid. As a result, the sudden rise and fall of voltage current profile damages the domestic and commercial loads. The proposed controller provides …

A Four-Port Bidirectional Dc-Dc Converter For Renewable Energy System And Microgrid, Xia Du
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Renewable energy has nowadays become important in electrical power applications. Power converters play an important role in integrating these distributed energy sources. However, due to their intermittence characteristics, e.g., the output power provided by the PV and wind turbine is not stable, either an energy storage system will be used or microgrid is formed between the main grid and the sources. To integrate these renewable energy sources and manage the power flow, a multiport converter is preferred because it is highly beneficial and cost-efficiently than the traditional solution that using multiple individual power converter for each source. This thesis proposed …
