Exploring The Feasibility Of Introducing Alternative Fuel Vehicles Into Fleet, Samia Rubaiat Dec 2020

Exploring The Feasibility Of Introducing Alternative Fuel Vehicles Into Fleet, Samia Rubaiat

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Transportation is one of the most significant contributing sectors to emissions and consequently air pollution in the United States. Many state and private fleet agencies have announced their visions of zero-emission fleet programs. Adopting alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) is a viable option for achieving this objective. AFVs offer lower emissions along with low operating and maintenance costs, and higher fuel economy. The advancement of technologies has provided several AFV options, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), electric vehicles (EV), compressed natural gas vehicles (CNGV), and liquefied petroleum gas vehicles (LPGV). The main challenges in adopting AFVs are the high purchasing …

Non-Conventional Vehicles As A Way Towards Carbon Neutrality In Iceland, Julia Sokolowska Oct 2020

Non-Conventional Vehicles As A Way Towards Carbon Neutrality In Iceland, Julia Sokolowska

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Paris Agreement’s chief objective is to protect the Earth and its inhabitants from a point of no return, when the effects of climate change will be so intense that they will shift the equilibrium of ecosystems. The distinctiveness of this international environmental treaty is that it does not impose climate change mitigation measures, but rather allows nation states to create their own set of measures, the NDCs, to reach the global warming of ‘well below 2oC’ by the end of the century. Thus, Iceland has submitted its own NDC, the Climate Action Plan 2018-2030, which has an ambitious goal of …

Thermal Modeling And Analysis Of Roadway Embedded Wireless Power Transfer Modules, Arden N. Barnes Aug 2020

Thermal Modeling And Analysis Of Roadway Embedded Wireless Power Transfer Modules, Arden N. Barnes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wireless charging of electric vehicles is a developing technology which potentially increases efficiency and safety. It also allows for charging vehicles while they are moving by having charging stations embedded in the roadway. Because roadways are thermally insulating, it is important to know how the heat from the charging stations will move through the roadway, which will allow further research into whether the heat will cause damage to the components in the station or to the roadway. This thesis studies the way the heat moves through concrete with wireless charging coils embedded in it. This is accomplished by measuring the …

Research On Full-Circuit Simulation Platform For Conducted Noise Pre-Evaluation, Shangbin Ye, Jiajia Zhang, Yicheng Zhang, Yongtao Yao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: As conducted noise frequency band of power convertor in electric vehicle is stricter than that in normal industrial equipment, a conducted noise simulation modeling method is needed which is suit for wide frequency range. A full-circuit conducted noise modeling method based on component model was proposed, in which high frequency dynamic characteristic was simulated by the active device model, complex impedance characteristic at full frequency band was described by the passive model, distributed parameter of bus structure and near-field coupling parameter were extracted to simulate their influence on coupling path of conducted noise. On the basis, full-circuit simulation platform …

Study Of A Symmetrical Llc Dual-Active Bridge Resonant Converter Topology For Battery Storage Systems, John K. George May 2020

Study Of A Symmetrical Llc Dual-Active Bridge Resonant Converter Topology For Battery Storage Systems, John K. George

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A symmetrical LLC resonant converter topology with a fixed-frequency quasi-triple phase-shift modulation method is proposed for battery-powered electric traction systems with extensions to other battery storage systems. Operation of the converter with these methods yields two unique transfer characteristics and is dependent on the switching frequency. The converter exhibits several desirable features: 1) load-independent buck-boost voltage conversion when operated at the low-impedance resonant frequency, allowing for dc-link voltage regulation, zero-voltage switching across a wide load range, and intrinsic load transient resilience; 2) power flow control when operated outside the low-impedance resonance for integrated battery charging; 3) and simple operational mode …

Joint Location And Inventory Models And Algorithms For Deployment Of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charging Stations., Jie Zhang May 2020

Joint Location And Inventory Models And Algorithms For Deployment Of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Charging Stations., Jie Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes a study of a novel concept of hybrid electric vehicle charging stations in which two types of services are offered: battery swapping and fast level-3 DC charging. The battery swapping and fast-charging service are modeled by using the M/G/s/s model and the M/G/s/$\infty$ model, respectively. In particular, we focus on the operations of joint battery swapping and fast charging services, develop four joint locations and inventory models: two for the deployment of battery swapping service, two for the deployment of hybrid electric vehicle charging service. The first model for each deployment system considers a service-level constraint for …

Induction motors are more attractive to car manufacturers because they are more robust and more cost effective to maintain in comparison with other types of electric machines. The evolution of their control makes them more efficient and less expensive. However, a new control technique known as sensorless control is being used to simplify the implementation of electric machines in electric vehicles. This technique involves replacing the flux and speed sensors with an observer. The estimation of these elements is based on the measurement of currents and voltages. The main purpose of the present study is to design a novel robust …

Robust Placement And Sizing Of Charging Stations From A Novel Graph Theoretic Perspective, Hossein Parastvand, Octavian Bass, Mohammad A. S. Masoum, Airlie Chapman, Stefan Lachowicz

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper proposes analytical approaches to extend the capacity of existing networks of electric vehicles (EVs) by placement of additional charging stations (CSs) as well as determining the sizes of existing and new CSs in order to handle future expansions of EVs. The EV flow at CSs is modeled by a graph where nodes are potential locations for CSs and edges are uncertain parameters representing the variable EV flow at CSs. The required extra CS locations are explored by transforming the CS placement problem into a controllability framework addressed by maximum matching principle (MMP). To find the sizes of each …

A Graph Automorphic Approach For Placement And Sizing Of Charging Stations In Ev Network Considering Traffic, Hossein Parastvand, Valeh Moghaddam, Octavian Bass, Mohammad A.S. Masoum, Airlie Chapman, Stefan Lachowicz

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper proposes a novel graph-based approach with automorphic grouping for the modelling, synthesis, and analysis of electric vehicle (EV) networks with charging stations (CSs) that considers the impacts of traffic. The EV charge demands are modeled by a graph where nodes are positioned at potential locations for CSs, and edges represent traffic flow between the nodes. A synchronization protocol is assumed for the network where the system states correspond to the waiting time at each node. These models are then utilized for the placement and sizing of CSs in order to limit vehicle waiting times at all stations below …
