Polymeric electrolytes are polymers containing the ionic moieties used for ion conduction in electrochemical devices. The strategic design of these materials requires the in-depth understanding of the relation between the molecular structure and the properties. This dissertation reports on computational simulations for two types of materials: hydrated anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for fuel cells and the polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs). Various chemical structures were covered for systematic investigations.

The severe accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011 ignited a global research and development effort to replace traditionally-used materials in Light Water Reactors (LWRs) with Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) materials. These materials are intended to extend the coping time of nuclear power plants during severe accident scenarios, but must undergo thorough safety and performance evaluations before being implemented. Freezing of gait (FoG) is a common motor dysfunction in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). FoG impairs walking and is associated with increased fall risk. Although pharmacological treatments have shown promise during ON-medication periods, FoG remains difficult to treat during medication OFF state and in advanced stages of the disease. External cueing therapy in the forms of visual, auditory, and vibrotactile, has been effective in treating gait deviations. This work focuses on establishing a comprehensive understanding of lignin-derived materials as a function of carbonization with the goal of identifying processing-structure-property-performance relationships. A combination of modeling, statistical, and empirical materials characterization techniques are applied to lignin materials varying in feedstock source, extraction method, and processing conditions. The first part of this study evaluates the structure of carbon composite materials, possessing both crystalline and amorphous domains, using scattering techniques. There is a significant need for low cost, high volume composites in the automotive industry to aid in vehicle lightweighting and safety. The current state-of-the-art severely compromises the mechanical properties of composites to achieve cost and cycle time goals. In this dissertation, a novel composite format, termed discontinuous carbon fiber organosheets, using recycled and repurposed carbon fibers in a thermoplastic matrix is developed and studied. Unlike traditional composites, the long fiber length and rapid processing time yield mechanical properties and cycle times competitive with automotive metals.

Arc flash and blast are hazards unique to electrical installations. Such events can start fires, destroy equipment, and severely injure or kill workers. NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 are defining standards for arc flash hazard analysis used during system design, construction, and maintenance. Both focus on three-phase faults for calculations since three-phase power distribution is predominant in utility and industrial applications. However, discussion of arc flash in single-phase systems prevalent in residential and commercial facilities is excluded. The ectomycorrhizal fungus Cenococcum geophilum is distributed worldwide across multiple climates and soil types and is known to positively associate with a multitude of plant genera, possibly contributing to plant ability to tolerate inorganic contaminants in a soil environment. New C. geophilum isolates are easily cultured from soils in a laboratory setting, making this an ideal candidate for a model species with which to study multiple plant-fungal effects across a collection of novel isolates. This work investigates the nonlinear oscillatory behaviors of multi-machine power systems. New model-based and measurement-based approaches are proposed for stability analysis and control of nonlinear oscillations.

For stability analysis, a recently proposed model-based nonlinear oscillation analysis method, nonlinear modal decoupling (NMD), is investigated on its ability in capturing the stability information of a multi-machine power system. As interest grows in electrochemistry for material separations and reprocessing of nuclear fuel research and development into the safegaurdability of such a system is needed. Plutonium quantification via (α,n) neutrons within the electrorefiner vessel is examined as a potential alternative means to the traditional spontaneous fission tracking. An MCNP model of an Epi-Thermal Neutron Multiplicity counter was used in the calculation of curium from a sample of curium, plutonium, and eutectic salt.
