Passive Control Strategies For Cooling A Non-Residential Nearly Zero Energy Office: Simulated Comfort Resilience Now And In The Future, Adam O'Donovan, Michael D. Murphy, Paul D. O'Sullivan Nov 2020

Passive Control Strategies For Cooling A Non-Residential Nearly Zero Energy Office: Simulated Comfort Resilience Now And In The Future, Adam O'Donovan, Michael D. Murphy, Paul D. O'Sullivan

Publications

The average global cooling demand in non-residential buildings is expected to increase by over 275% between now and 2050. Controlled passive cooling is fundamental to successful operational performance of buildings and in mitigating energy that would otherwise be consumed by mechanical systems. The aim of this study was to determine the resilience of different passive cooling control strategies in delivering optimal comfort and energy scenarios in both current and future extreme conditions, for low energy indoor office spaces. Simulations were conducted using a calibrated TRNSYS 17 model of a nearly zero energy building. The performance of ten passive cooling control …

Facilitating Educational Opportunities For Pilots Using Cohort Rpl, Pio Fenton, Deirdre Goggin Oct 2020

Facilitating Educational Opportunities For Pilots Using Cohort Rpl, Pio Fenton, Deirdre Goggin

Dept. of Marketing & International Business Conference Material

Facilitating Educational Opportunities for Pilots using Cohort RPL 3.3 Pio Fenton and Deirdre Goggin The lifestyle and, indeed workstyle, of pilots has long proved an impediment to the attainment of third level qualifications while maintaining active and full participation in the workforce. Equally, the significant investment in pilot training has been poorly reflected in mechanisms of advanced entry to college and university programmes. This poses a quandary for those of us in Higher Education which requires quick resolution for this critical element of the airline industry. Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) has developed a programme which, by design, reflects the …

Development Of A Grass Measurement Optimisation Tool To Efficiently Measure Herbage Mass On Grazed Pastures, D. J. Murphy, B. O'Brien, Michael D. Murphy Oct 2020

Development Of A Grass Measurement Optimisation Tool To Efficiently Measure Herbage Mass On Grazed Pastures, D. J. Murphy, B. O'Brien, Michael D. Murphy

Publications

Accurate and efficient estimation of herbage mass is essential for optimising grass utilisation and increasing profit for pasture farming. There is no definitive sampling protocol for grass measurement on Irish pastures. This paper presents the Grass Measurement Optimisation Tool (GMOT), designed to generate measurement protocols that optimise for time and accuracy. The GMOT was designed in the form of a decision support tool that generates interactive paddock maps that guide the farmer on how to optimally measure their pastures in a random stratified manner based on GPS co-ordinates, resulting in accurate non-biased estimations of mean herbage mass. Rising plate meter …

Deal: Differentially Private Auction For Blockchain Based Microgrids Energy Trading, Muneeb Ul Hassan, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Jinjun Chen Mar 2020

Deal: Differentially Private Auction For Blockchain Based Microgrids Energy Trading, Muneeb Ul Hassan, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Jinjun Chen

Publications

Modern smart homes are being equipped with certain renewable energy resources that can produce their own electric energy. From time to time, these smart homes or microgrids are also capable of supplying energy to other houses, buildings, or energy grid in the time of available self-produced renewable energy. Therefore, researches have been carried out to develop optimal trading strategies, and many recent technologies are also being used in combination with microgrids. One such technology is blockchain, which works over decentralized distributed ledger. In this paper, we develop a blockchain based approach for microgrid energy auction. To make this auction more …

Differential Privacy Techniques For Cyber Physical Systems: A Survey, Muneeb Ul Hassan, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Jinjun Chen Mar 2020

Differential Privacy Techniques For Cyber Physical Systems: A Survey, Muneeb Ul Hassan, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Jinjun Chen

Publications

Modern cyber physical systems (CPSs) has widely being used in our daily lives because of development of information and communication technologies (ICT).With the provision of CPSs, the security and privacy threats associated to these systems are also increasing. Passive attacks are being used by intruders to get access to private information of CPSs. In order to make CPSs data more secure, certain privacy preservation strategies such as encryption, and k-anonymity have been presented in the past. However, with the advances in CPSs architecture, these techniques also need certain modifications. Meanwhile, differential privacy emerged as an efficient technique to protect CPSs …

A Bridge-Rehabilitation Strategy Based On The Analysis Of A Bridge-Inspection Data Set, Liam Dromey, Kieran Ruane, John J. Murphy, Brian O'Rourke, Seán Lacey Mar 2020

A Bridge-Rehabilitation Strategy Based On The Analysis Of A Bridge-Inspection Data Set, Liam Dromey, Kieran Ruane, John J. Murphy, Brian O'Rourke, Seán Lacey

Publications

Bridge-management systems (BMSs) allow bridge owners to assess the condition of their bridge stock. However, not all BMS packages have the capability to formulate network-level bridge-rehabilitation investment strategies. This research has developed a decision-support system for bridge owners in the selection of the best strategy for bridge rehabilitation at the network level. The basis of the research is an available data set of 1367 bridge-inspection records for County Cork, Ireland, that has been prepared to the Eirspan BMS inspection standard. The developed system consists of a project-prioritisation procedure that builds on previous research, a methodology for the calculation of a …

Mac Protocols For Terahertz Communication: A Comprehensive Survey, Saim Ghafoor, Noureddine Boujnah, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Alan Davy Jan 2020

Mac Protocols For Terahertz Communication: A Comprehensive Survey, Saim Ghafoor, Noureddine Boujnah, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Alan Davy

Publications

Terahertz communication is emerging as a future technology to support Terabits per second link with highlighting features as high throughput and negligible latency. However, the unique features of the Terahertz band such as high path loss, scattering, and reflection pose new challenges and results in short communication distance. The antenna directionality, in turn, is required to enhance the communication distance and to overcome the high path loss. However, these features in combine negate the use of traditional medium access protocols (MAC). Therefore, novel MAC protocol designs are required to fully exploit their potential benefits including efficient channel access, control message …
