Coal Geology & Exploration

Correctly understanding the micro-scale fracture characteristics of the Lower Cambrian shale and the evolution law of acoustic emission signals are of great reference value in the study of shale mechanical characteristics, fracture mechanism and shale gas development and utilization. In this paper, based on digital image processing technology, the non-uniform characterization of quartz-filled shale is carried out, and a numerical model is established using the real rock fracture analysis system RFPA2D-DIP to simulate the failure process of shale under different confining pressures. The test results show that under the micro-scale structure, the shale failure mode can be roughly …

Nanoindentation Characterization Of Elastic Properties Of Shales And Swelling Clay Minerals, Shengmin Luo Mar 2020

Nanoindentation Characterization Of Elastic Properties Of Shales And Swelling Clay Minerals, Shengmin Luo

Doctoral Dissertations

Oil and gas shales are a class of multiscale, multiphase, hybrid inorganic-organic sedimentary rocks that consist of a generally uniform, preferentially oriented clay matrix with randomly embedded silt and sand particles as solid inclusions. A thorough understanding of the mechanical properties of shales is crucial for the exploration and production of oil and gas in the unconventional shale reservoirs, but it can be a challenging task due to their nature of compositional heterogeneity and microstructural anisotropy. In efforts to better characterize the mechanical properties of shales across different length scales and to fundamentally understand the laws of upscaling from individual …

Numerical Simulation Of Rupture Process Of Shale Under Action Of Fluid-Solid Coupling, Lou Yili, Wu Zhonghu, Wang Anli, Zuo Yujun, Liu Hao, Sun Wenjibin Feb 2020

Coal Geology & Exploration

In order to investigate the rupture process and acoustic emission characteristics of shale under fluid-solid coupling, the numerical simulation of fluid-solid coupling of the Niutitang Formation shale in different bedding angle in the northern part of the Qianbei area was carried out by RFPA2D-Flow numerical software. Studies have shown that due to the influence of the bedding structure, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of shale show obvious anisotropy. The rupture process of shale can be divided into three stages: elasticity, yielding and destruction. With the change of the bedding angle, the shale finally showed three failure modes, namely oblique …

Characterization Of Rare Earth Elements In The Illinois Basin Coals, Alireza Valian Jan 2020

Characterization Of Rare Earth Elements In The Illinois Basin Coals, Alireza Valian

Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering

The purpose of this study is to characterize the distribution and occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) in the coal and coal-related material from the Illinois Basin. For characterizing the distribution of REEs, 17 core samples were investigated from various parts in the basin. Also, several individual samples from coal preparation plants and isolated geological occurrences were included in the study. In result, the average REE concentrations were calculated on a bed-to-bed basis, although the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was found laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found that describe the variations. Most importantly, …
