Applied Studies In Digital Fabrication And Parametricism, Rasha Sukkarieh

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Presented is a research investigating the ability of digital fabrication tools to provide an alternative method for creating complex forms as part of an ongoing PhD research. The digital tool provides a comprehensive digital basis for construction that, since the beginning of building industrialization, has been an illusion rather than a reality. Beyond catching up on technology, the digital fabrication tool hereby provokes fundamental changes in the architectural discipline: the mere relation of the digital reality of computers with the physical reality of architecture. As opposed to the experiments in the early days of digitization, the focus is no longer …

Para(Noia)Metric: Architecture Beyond The Edge Of Rationality, Marwan Halabi

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Nowadays, efforts are being tremendously put in order to facilitate opportunities for the fourth industrial revolution to play a real role in the destiny of architectural design and construction. Parametric design and digital fabrication are some of the tools that have been contributing in this uprising for the last two decades. The amount of solutions developed so far has, sometimes out of curiosity, been used in alternative ways that occasionally lead to highly appreciated outcomes, and sometimes immersed us in worlds of rationally controlled complexities that might be not so useful. Some of the highly sophisticated computational design processes strengths …

The Digital Fabrication Lab Contribution To The Sustainable Development Goals: Exploring Waste Materials And Fabrication Techniques, Marwan Halabi

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

The SDGs, commonly known as Sustainable Development Goals, unveil the shortcomings and deficiencies of the building sector facing of the challenges of the planet. Unfortunately, the news is not positive since the objectives established by the United Nations General Assembly should be reached by 2030. From the 17 goals and 169 targets, a case study was developed in order to test its effectiveness against SDG 9, which deals with Infrastructure, Innovation and Industry. In this sense, technology should play a significant role in the mapping criteria against the objective and its targets. Therefore, an overview of the potential digital tools …
