An Optimal Allocation And Sizing Strategy Of Distributed Energy Storage Systems To Improve Performance Of Distribution Networks, Choton K. Das, Octavian Bass, Thair S. Mahmoud, Ganesh Kothapalli, Mohammad A. S. Masoum, Navid Mousavi

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The allocation of grid-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) can play a significant role in solving distribution network issues and improving overall network performance. This paper presents a strategy for optimal allocation and sizing of distributed ESSs through P and Q injection by the ESSs to a distribution network. The investigation is carried out in a renewable-penetrated (wind and solar) medium voltage IEEE-33 bus distribution network for two different scenarios: (1) using a uniform ESS size and (2) using non-uniform ESS sizes. DIgSILENT PowerFactory is used for system modeling and testing, and simulation events are automated using Python scripting. A hybrid …

Smart Management Strategies Of Utility-Scale Energy Storage Systems In Power Networks, Choton Kanti Das

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Power systems are presently experiencing a period of rapid change driven by various interrelated issues, e.g., integration of renewables, demand management, power congestion, power quality requirements, and frequency regulation. Although the deployment of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) has been shown to provide effective solutions to many of these issues, misplacement or non-optimal sizing of these systems can adversely affect network performance. This present research has revealed some novel working strategies for optimal allocation and sizing of utility-scale ESSs to address some important issues of power networks at both distribution and transmission levels. The optimization strategies employed for ESS placement and …

Safe and secure network operation with acceptable voltage level has become a challenging task for utilities requiring corrective measures to be implemented. Network upgrades using Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System devices are being considered to serve this purpose. To this end, static loading margin enhancement by optimal static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) allocation to enhance the power transfer capability with minimal voltage variation is presented. Maximum loadability is formulated as an optimization problem, subjected to voltage and small-signal stability constraints. Stability indices are presented and incorporated with the optimization problem to ensure secure operation under maximum loading. The scheme is executed …

Optimal Placement Of Switching And Protection Devices In Radial Distribution Networks To Enhance System Reliability Using The Ahp-Pso Method, Masoud Amohadi, Mahmud Fotuhi Firuzabad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new method to determine the optimal number and locations of autorecloser and sectionalizer switches (AR/S) in distribution networks. The costs of AR/S investment, switch maintenance, and undistributed energy as well as reliability coefficients are considered in the objective function. Reliability parameters such as SAIFI, SADI, MAIFI, and ENS are evaluated in the case study system. As a new method, the weights of the reliability parameters are obtained by decision-makers using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The optimal size, type, and location of automatic switches are determined by minimizing the objective function using the particle swarm optimization …
