Optimum Design Of Axial Flux Pm Machines Based On Electromagnetic 3d Fea, Narges Taran

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines have recently attracted significant attention due to several reasons, such as their specific form factor, potentially higher torque density and lower losses, feasibility of increasing the number of poles, and facilitating innovative machine structures for emerging applications. One such machine design, which has promising, high efficiency particularly at higher speeds, is of the coreless AFPM type and has been studied in the dissertation together with more conventional AFPM topologies that employ a ferromagnetic core.

A challenge in designing coreless AFPM machines is estimating the eddy current losses. This work proposes a new hybrid analytical …

Optimal Distribution Feeder Reconfiguration With Distributed Generation Using Intelligent Techniques, Ahmad Ghaweta Jan 2019

Optimal Distribution Feeder Reconfiguration With Distributed Generation Using Intelligent Techniques, Ahmad Ghaweta

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Feeder reconfiguration is performed by changing the open/close status of two types of switches: normally open tie switches and normally closed sectionalizing switches. A whole feeder or part of a feeder may be served from another feeder by closing a tie switch linking the two while an appropriate sectionalizing switch must be opened to maintain the radial structure of the system. Feeder reconfiguration is mainly aiming to reduce the system overall power losses and improve voltage profile. In this dissertation, several approaches have been proposed to reconfigure the radial distribution networks including the potential impact of integrating Distributed Energy Resources …

Estimation Of Transmission Line Parameters Using Linear Method With Synchronized And Unsynchronized Data, Mustafa Lahmar Jan 2019

Estimation Of Transmission Line Parameters Using Linear Method With Synchronized And Unsynchronized Data, Mustafa Lahmar

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Accurate value of transmission line parameters is important for power system protection applications, especially for distance relays whose zone settings are based on positive sequence line impedance. The research is devoted to estimating transmission line positive-sequence parameters from synchronized or unsynchronized measurements of voltage and current phasors that are obtained at both terminals of the line. The positive sequence parameters including series impedance and shunt admittance can be linearly estimated. The linear least square algorithm has been derived in this dissertation for different transmission line configurations. The algorithm is able to handle both synchronized and unsynchronized measurements and deal with …

A Compiler Target Model For Line Associative Registers, Paul S. Eberhart Jan 2019

A Compiler Target Model For Line Associative Registers, Paul S. Eberhart

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

LARs (Line Associative Registers) are very wide tagged registers, used for both register-wide SWAR (SIMD Within a Register )operations and scalar operations on arbitrary fields. LARs include a large data field, type tags, source addresses, and a dirty bit, which allow them to not only replace both caches and registers in the conventional memory hierarchy, but improve on both their functions. This thesis details a LAR-based architecture, and describes the design of a compiler which can generate code for a LAR-based design. In particular, type conversion, alignment, and register allocation are discussed in detail.

Mathematical Programming Approach For The Design Of Satellite Power Systems, Allen Flath Iii Jan 2019

Mathematical Programming Approach For The Design Of Satellite Power Systems, Allen Flath Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Satellite power systems can be understood as islanded dc microgrids supplied by specialized and coordinated solar cell arrays augmented by electrochemical battery systems to handle high-power loads and periods of eclipse. The periodic availability of power, the limited capacity of batteries, and the dependence of all mission service on power consumption create a unique situation in which temporal power and energy scarcity exist. A multi-period model of an orbital satellite power system’s performance over a mission’s duration can be constructed. A modular power system architecture is used to characterize the system’s constraints. Using mathematical programming, an optimization problem can be …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Planar-Structure Perovskite Solar Cells, Guoduan Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Currently organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is one kind of promising photovoltaic technology due to low production cost, easy fabrication method and high power conversion efficiency.

Charge transport layers are found to be critical for device performance and stability. A traditional electron transport layer (ETL), such as TiO2 (Titanium dioxide), is not very efficient for charge extraction at the interface. Compared with TiO2, SnO2 (Tin (IV) Oxide) possesses several advantages such as higher mobility and better energy level alignment. In addition, PSCs with planar structure can be processed at lower temperature compared to PSCs with …

Fault Location Techniques Using The Traveling Wave Method And The Discrete Wavelet Transform, Wesley Fluty

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Fault location within electric power systems is an important topic that helps reduce outage duration and increases reliability of the system. This paper explores the topic of fault location using traveling waves generated by fault conditions and the discrete wavelet transform used for time-frequency analysis. The single-ended and double-ended traveling wave methods are presented and evaluated on a single circuit and double circuit 500kV system modeled using MATLAB SIMULINK. Results are compared on the basis of wavelet used for analysis, sampling rate, and fault resistance.

Spatial Augmented Reality Using Structured Light Illumination, Ying Yu Jan 2019

Spatial Augmented Reality Using Structured Light Illumination, Ying Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Spatial augmented reality is a particular kind of augmented reality technique that uses projector to blend the real objects with virtual contents. Coincidentally, as a means of 3D shape measurement, structured light illumination makes use of projector as part of its system as well. It uses the projector to generate important clues to establish the correspondence between the 2D image coordinate system and the 3D world coordinate system. So it is appealing to build a system that can carry out the functionalities of both spatial augmented reality and structured light illumination.

In this dissertation, we present all the hardware platforms …

Fast, Sparse Matrix Factorization And Matrix Algebra Via Random Sampling For Integral Equation Formulations In Electromagnetics, Owen Tanner Wilkerson Jan 2019

Fast, Sparse Matrix Factorization And Matrix Algebra Via Random Sampling For Integral Equation Formulations In Electromagnetics, Owen Tanner Wilkerson

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Many systems designed by electrical & computer engineers rely on electromagnetic (EM) signals to transmit, receive, and extract either information or energy. In many cases, these systems are large and complex. Their accurate, cost-effective design requires high-fidelity computer modeling of the underlying EM field/material interaction problem in order to find a design with acceptable system performance. This modeling is accomplished by projecting the governing Maxwell equations onto finite dimensional subspaces, which results in a large matrix equation representation (Zx = b) of the EM problem. In the case of integral equation-based formulations of EM problems, the M-by-N system matrix, Z, …
