DIRECTOR'S NOTE in Volume 2
Each fall, the Honors Program at Olivet Nazarene University admits a small number of academically gifted students into its freshman class. From the moment they set foot on our campus, these women and men join a community of scholars, and together they read, reflect upon, and discuss the most important ideas of the past and present—all within a Christian fellowship. The first two years of the program involve a series of Honors courses, taught by a team of faculty and modeled on the historic “old-time college,” where small class relationships, interdisciplinary discussion, and debate prevailed. …

Performance Analysis Of An Exhaust Heat Recovery System Utilizing Heat Pipes, Metal Foam, And Thermoelectric Generators, Michael J. Resciniti
ELAIA
Developing efficient thermoelectric generator systems to recover wasted thermal energy from automotive exhaust gasses has potential to improve engine efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Due to their high thermal transfer efficiency, heat pipes have been used to assist thermoelectric generator systems in these applications. To aid in additional heat transfer, metal fins are often used with heat pipes to take advantage of extended-surface heat transfer. This paper proposes a thermoelectric generator system that employs metal foam as an extended-surface heat transfer aid used in conjunction with heat pipes. Three test conditions were simulated to evaluate the system performance in terms …

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David J. Kok
ELAIA
The desire to reduce pollution caused by electricity production has led to a call for the replacement of conventional fossil fuel power plants. In order to fulfill this goal, a large amount of new nuclear reactors is required, and this provides the opportunity to put new and innovative reactor designs into production. The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is one of the most promising concepts, but a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found to reduce the potential for corrosion before the concept can be put into production. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy …

Thermal And Orbital Analysis Of Darkness Cubesat, Anna Katherine Dickey
ELAIA
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is sending a 3U CubeSat into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to search for a 3.5 keV photon corresponding to the decay of a theorized dark matter particle called the sterile neutrino. The CubeSat will encounter environmental variations while in orbit that can be computed through an orbital analysis using System’s Tool Kit. In order to minimize thermal noise readout, improve optical resolution, and increase bandwidth, the sensors must be kept below 170 K while taking data. This temperature is difficult to achieve due to radiation from the Sun and the Earth’s albedo radiation. Through the thermal …

Evaluating The Scalability Of The Sonication Method Of Graphene Oxide Synthesis, Evan J. Dexter

Graphene is a new material that was first isolated in 2004 and consists of one to a few atomic layers of carbon in a lattice sheet structure. Graphene has high tensile strength, high surface area, very low electrical resistance, and various other special properties that make it an excellent material for use in emerging technologies in the categories of electrical components, energy systems, and high strength applications. The production scale of graphene sheets and its variations is currently limited to laboratory use, with increasing research being conducted toward the development of manufacturing techniques of the material. We conducted experiments to …

Prospects Of An Astrotourism Site In Namibia, Chris Stone
Pence-Boyce STEM Student Scholarship
Namibia has significant potential as an astrotourism destination. A handful of sites are already utilizing the region’s clear, dark skies to draw tourists and establish a viable business model. These sites include the Gamsberg Observatory, NamibRand Nature Reserve, Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, Hakos Guest Farm, and Tivoli Astrofarm. The establishment of future professional astronomical research facilities on the Gamsberg Mountain Plateau will also likely add to the attraction of tourists interested in viewing Namibia’s dark skies. The best months for astronomical observing in Namibia are the dry winter months between June and September, which correspond to peak seasonal visits for hunting …

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok
Scholar Week 2016 - present
The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) has been identified as a promising candidate to replace aging nuclear reactors around the world. However, a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found in order to reduce the potential for corrosion in the MSR before it can be considered commercially viable. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy N have been identified as prime candidates for this function, but the severity of FLiNaK corrosion in Hastelloy N requires additional study before this combination can be used in the operation of a MSR. In this study, Hastelloy N samples …

CRISM images from Mars are expected to contain carbonates such as magnesite. Prior research has been successfully able to determine the approximate percent composition of phyllosilicates in binary lab mixtures using Principle Component Analysis (PCA). In order to expand this model to work on CRISM images, one of preliminary steps is allowing the algorithm to work on mixtures with more than two components, which was the primary purpose of this research.

Performance Analysis Of An Exhaust Heat Recovery System Utilizing Heat Pipes, Metal Foam, And Thermoelectric Generators, Michael Resciniti
Scholar Week 2016 - present
This paper highlights a new type of modified heat pipe assisted thermoelectric generator system for automobile exhaust waste heat recovery. This system employs the use of metal foam as a heat transfer aid to increase the thermal energy transferred through the system. In this system, heat pipes are inserted into a metal foam block that is exposed to the exhaust gas stream. The metal foam increases heat transfer in a similar way that fins increase heat transfer. To confirm that this system provides a greater conversion of thermal energy, an experimental prototype was built and tested. Tests were conducted with …
