Sway And No-Sway Behaviour Of Pitched Roof Portal Frames Composed Of Cold-Formed Steel Sections, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D, P.Eng., Maged Tawfick Hanna Ph.D

Civil Engineering

Cold-formed sections buckle locally and distortionally in combination with overall buckling of the member. When these sections are incorporated into a portal frame structure, this combination of buckling modes affects the overall buckling behaviour of the portal frame. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of local and distortional buckling on the overall behaviour of portal frames. The portal frames studied have a span of 10 m and an eave height of 3 m with a roof pitch of 1:10. Two frames are studied the first with one intermediate interconnector at the midpoints of the column and …

Long-Term Performance Evaluation Of Nudeck In Kearney East Bypass, George Morcous, Marc Maguire

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

The Kearney East Bypass bridge is the first project that implements the newly developed precast concrete deck system (known as 2nd generation NUDECK). The new system consists of full-depth full-width precast prestressed concrete deck panels that are 12 ft (3.66 m) long each. The panels have covered shear pockets at 4 ft (1.22 m) spacing on each girder line to host clustered shear connectors that are adjustable in height. Narrow unreinforced transverse joints are used to eliminate the need for deck overlay. Also, deck panels are post-tensioned in the longitudinal direction using a new post-tensioning system that eliminates the need …

Analysis Of Roofs Of Wooden Houses Under Uplift Wind Loads- Analytical Solution, Retrofit, And Reliability Analysis, Adnan Farouk Enajar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Observations of post-hurricane events indicate that light-frame wood houses are vulnerable to failure

Observations of post-hurricane events indicate that light-frame wood houses are vulnerable to failure due to the inability of their connections to provide sufficient transfer of uplift wind loads from the roof of the house to the foundation. One of these connections is the roof-to-wall connection (RTWC), which connects roof trusses to the top plate members of the walls. This issue has been investigated through full-scale testing at the Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes. This thesis describes the detailed finite element modelling performed for this full-scale testing …

Finite Element Analysis Of Hollow-Stemmed Shoulder Implants In Different Bone Qualities Derived From A Statistical Shape And Density Model, Pendar Soltanmohammadi Sep 2019

Finite Element Analysis Of Hollow-Stemmed Shoulder Implants In Different Bone Qualities Derived From A Statistical Shape And Density Model, Pendar Soltanmohammadi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The incidence of total shoulder arthroplasty procedures (TSA) to treat osteoarthritis has experienced the most rapid growth among all human joint replacements. However, stress shielding of proximal bone following its reconstruction is a complication of TSA triggering unfavorable adaptive bone remodeling, especially for osteoporotic patients.

A better understanding of how the shape and density of the shoulder vary among members of a population can help design more effective population-based orthopedic implants. Therefore, finite element models representing healthy, osteopenic, and osteoporotic bone qualities in a population were developed using our statistical shape and density model. Bones were reconstructed with hollow- and …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to predict the transient thermal cycle and optimize process parameters to analyze these effects on deformation and residual stresses. However, the process of predicting the thermal history in this process with the FEA method is usually time-consuming, especially for large-scale parts. In this paper, an effective predictive model of part deformation and residual stress was developed for accurately predicting deformation and residual stresses in large-scale parts. An equivalent body heat flux proposed from the single layer laser scan model was imported as the thermal load to the layer by layer model. The hatched layer …

Development Of A Statistical Shape-Function Model Of The Implanted Knee For Real-Time Prediction Of Joint Mechanics, Kalin Gibbons

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are dependent on surgical technique, patient variability, and implant design. Non-optimal design or alignment choices may result in undesirable contact mechanics and joint kinematics, including poor joint alignment, instability, and reduced range of motion. Implant design and surgical alignment are modifiable factors with potential to improve patient outcomes, and there is a need for robust implant designs that can accommodate patient variability. Our objective was to develop a statistical shape-function model (SFM) of a posterior stabilized implant knee to instantaneously predict output mechanics in an efficient manner. Finite element methods were combined with Latin …

Modeling Thermal And Mechanical Cancellation Of Residual Stress From Hybrid Additive Manufacturing By Laser Peening, Guru Madireddy, Chao Li, Jingfu Liu, Michael P. Sealy

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Additive manufacturing (AM) of metals often results in parts with unfavorable mechanical properties. Laser peening (LP) is a high strain rate mechanical surface treatment that hammers a workpiece and induces favorable mechanical properties. Peening strain hardens a surface and imparts compressive residual stresses improving the mechanical properties of a material. This work investigates the role of LP on layer-by-layer processing of 3D printed metals using finite element analysis. The objective is to understand temporal and spatial residual stress development after thermal and mechanical cancellation caused by cyclically coupling printing and peening. Results indicate layer peening frequency is a critical process …

Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin Jul 2019

Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin

Theses and Dissertations

When designing an engineering part, better decisions are made by exploring the entire space of design variations. This design space exploration (DSE) may be accomplished manually or via optimization. In engineering, evaluating a design during DSE often consists of running expensive simulations, such as finite element analysis (FEA) in order to understand the structural response to design changes. The computational cost of these simulations can make thorough DSE infeasible, and only a relatively small subset of the designs are explored. Surrogate models have been used to make cheap predictions of certain simulation results. Commonly, these models only predict single values …

Characterization Of Geogrid Reinforced Ballast Behavior Through Finite Element Modeling, Bugra Sinmez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recently, the railway pavement structure system, as an integral part of the transport infrastructure, has been under fast development in some countries such as China, Turkey, and some European Union countries, particularly for the use of high-speed trains. In designing and constructing the railway pavement structure, it is necessary to take into account the infrastructure demand of the High-Speed Railway Lines (HSRL). Compared to traditional railway trains, HSRL can cause more significant problems to the ballast or base layer of commonly used ballasted railway pavements. The deteriorated ballast or base layer may further result in substructure degradation that may cause …

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Poroelastoplastic Soil, Kai Liu May 2019

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Cavity Expansion In Anisotropic Poroelastoplastic Soil, Kai Liu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cavity expansion/contraction problems have attracted intensive attentions over the past several decades due to its versatile applications, such as the interpretation of pressuremeter/piezocone penetration testing results and the modelling of pile installation/tunnel excavation in civil engineering, and the prediction of critical mud pressure required to maintain the wellbore stability in petroleum engineering. Despite the fact that various types of constitutive models have been covered in the literature on this subject, the soils and/or rocks were usually treated as isotropic geomaterials.

In recognition of the above fact, this research makes a substantial extension of the fundamental cavity expansion theory by considering …

Analysis Of Adhesive Anchorage Systems Under Extreme In-Service Temperature Conditions, Rachel Wang Mar 2019

Analysis Of Adhesive Anchorage Systems Under Extreme In-Service Temperature Conditions, Rachel Wang

Masters Theses

Adhesive anchorage systems have found widespread use in structural applications, including bridge widening, concrete repair and rehabilitation, and barrier retrofitting. Because these applications typically require adhesive anchorage systems to be installed outdoors, the effects of climate conditions and day-to-day temperature fluctuations on adhesive behavior and performance should be considered. The purpose of this thesis is to simulate pullout tests of adhesive anchorage systems for threaded rod and reinforcing bars and to emulate effects under various temperature conditions through the use of finite element analysis. Results from the finite element simulation are then compared to the physical tests conducted at UMass …

Performance Of Concrete Tunnel Systems Subject To Fault Displacement, Michael Morano Mar 2019

Performance Of Concrete Tunnel Systems Subject To Fault Displacement, Michael Morano

Masters Theses

A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) investigation of concrete tunnel systems traversing seismic faults is carried out to determine how to effectively mitigate the stresses induced in the liner when subject to fault displacement. A parametric study of various fault parameters, both in the damage zone and competent rock, is carried out to determine the site conditions which induce the most stress on the tunnel liner system. Results indicate that friction angle, cohesion, and elastic modulus of fault zones have varying effects on the stresses induced on the liner. The width of damage zone and expected displacements are also investigated and …

The cargo clip used in these cargo loading systems will be the subject of our article. In this context, the development process of the clip, which started in 1953 until today, will be examined in the light of the patent applications of the period; Afterwards, alternative clip-on work to the current cargo …

A Computational Assessment Of Lisfranc Injuries And Their Surgical Repairs, Michael Perez Jan 2019

A Computational Assessment Of Lisfranc Injuries And Their Surgical Repairs, Michael Perez

Theses and Dissertations

While Lisfranc injuries in the mid foot are less common than other ankle and mid foot injuries, they pose challenges in both properly identifying them and treating them. When Lisfranc injuries are ligamentous and do not include obvious fractures, they are very challenging for clinicians to identify unless weight bearing radiographs are used. The result is that 20%-40% of Lisfranc injuries are missed in the initial evaluation. Even when injuries are correctly identified the outcomes of surgical procedures remain poor. Existing literature has compared the different surgical procedures but has not had a standard approach or procedures across studies. This …

The Relative Contribution Of Fixation Features, Activity, And Tibiofemoral Conformity On Initial Stability Of Cementless Tibial Trays, James Sullivan Deacy Jan 2019

The Relative Contribution Of Fixation Features, Activity, And Tibiofemoral Conformity On Initial Stability Of Cementless Tibial Trays, James Sullivan Deacy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Initial stability of cementless total knee replacements (TKR) is critical to implant success as excessive motion between the bone and implant prevents bony ingrowth that is critical to the long-term survivability of cementless implants. Prior studies have shown that excessive micromotion causes fibrous tissue growth instead of beneficial bony growth. There are many factors that influence initial stability including the design of the tibial tray and the tibiofemoral articulations. Understanding the impacts of these design features on micromotion between the bone and implants is crucial to improving the performance of cementless TKR. Prior studies only tested for the effect of …
