A Mathematical Framework On Machine Learning: Theory And Application, Bin Shi Nov 2018

A Mathematical Framework On Machine Learning: Theory And Application, Bin Shi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation addresses the research topics of machine learning outlined below. We developed the theory about traditional first-order algorithms from convex opti- mization and provide new insights in nonconvex objective functions from machine learning. Based on the theory analysis, we designed and developed new algorithms to overcome the difficulty of nonconvex objective and to accelerate the speed to obtain the desired result. In this thesis, we answer the two questions: (1) How to design a step size for gradient descent with random initialization? (2) Can we accelerate the current convex optimization algorithms and improve them into nonconvex objective? For application, …

Simulation Analysis Of Magnetic Field Effect In Induction Heating Coil Of Porous Silicon Core Furnace, Jingang Li, Gaoyuan Liu Jun 2018

Simulation Analysis Of Magnetic Field Effect In Induction Heating Coil Of Porous Silicon Core Furnace, Jingang Li, Gaoyuan Liu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A new technology of porous coil disposable drawing a plurality of single crystal silicon rod can solve the problem of low efficiency and high cost of zone melting method of single induction heating coil in drawing monocrystalline silicon. However, the missing of the theoretical research and mature technology leads to different sizes of monocrystalline silicon rods. According to electromagnetic theory,Some characterisitics of the porous coil are studied, including magnetic field model, operating principle, magnetic field distribution. To prove the mechanism of the technology, a mathematical model of the porous coil is constructed based on Matlab and Ansys software. The magnetic flux density distribution …

Comparison Of Ground Movements During Trenchless Technology Operations For Pipe And Box Installations By Numerical Analysis, Taha Ashoori May 2018

Comparison Of Ground Movements During Trenchless Technology Operations For Pipe And Box Installations By Numerical Analysis, Taha Ashoori

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Trenchless Technologies (TTs) are alternatives or methods of choice for the construction and renewal of buried pipe or box with little or no surface disruption. Specifically, TTs are used when other traditional methods, such as cut-and-cover methods are not physically possible. Other reasons for TT methods to be increasingly adopted by owners, engineers, and contractors are their low environmental impacts and, based on the project and the site conditions, lower costs per foot of installed pipe, making these technologies much more efficient and versatile with final results within a shorter time span. Trenchless technology methods are divided into two main …

Behavior Of Piled Raft Foundation In Partially Saturated Soils, Salman Alrubaye Apr 2018

Behavior Of Piled Raft Foundation In Partially Saturated Soils, Salman Alrubaye

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Current foundation design practice considers conventional pile group foundation when simpler and rather economical raft foundations do not meet one of the design criteria. However, design requirements could be met by incorporating a reduced number of piles with the raft. Piled Raft foundation (PRF) is a composite foundation in which, the piles and the raft contribute to the total resistance of the foundation.

The objective of this dissertation is to study the behavior of PRF in fully and partially saturated soils. The primary purpose of this study is to develop models capable of estimating the resistance of different types of …

Numerical Analysis And Case Study On The Mitigation Of Mining Damage To The Floor Of No. 5 Coal Seam Of Taiyuan Group By Grouting, A. Li, Y. Liu, L. Mou, K. Li Jan 2018

Numerical Analysis And Case Study On The Mitigation Of Mining Damage To The Floor Of No. 5 Coal Seam Of Taiyuan Group By Grouting, A. Li, Y. Liu, L. Mou, K. Li

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Based on the geological condition of panel 22507 of the no. 5 coal seam at Dongjiahe coal mine, numerical analysis of the stability and water permeability of the floor aquiclude before and after grouting was conducted using Rock Failure Process Analysis (F-RFPA2D). The dynamic development, extension, and distribution of the cracks in the aquiclude are discussed. It is shown that grouting can increase the effective thickness of the aquiclude, reduce the floor damage depth, and control the floor water inrush path, thus effectively improving the overall strength and water blocking capability of the aquiclude. These numerical study results were applied …
