On boxing day, 26 December 2004, the largest earthquake for more than 4 decades, (magnitude 9.0) occurred between the Australian and Eurasian plates in the Indian Ocean (along the overly stressed Sunda trench) to the west of Aceh Province (Northern Sumatra). The quake triggered a series of waves that increased in height rapidly close to the shore (tsunami) spreading thousands of kilometers across the Bay of Bengal. In the Eastern and Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, the floodwaters reached almost 1 km inland, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and fatalities of unprecedented proportions. Many different Small Area Estimation (SAE) methods have been proposed to overcome the challenge of findingreliable estimates for small domains. Often, the required data for various research purposes are available at differentlevels of aggregation. Based on the available data, individual-level or aggregated-level models are used in SAE.However, parameter estimates obtained from individual and aggregated level analysis may be different, in practice.This may happen due to some substantial contextual or area-level effects in the covariates which may be misspecifiedin individual-level analysis. Introduction:The aim of the current study was to assess the impact of an intervention aimed at communicating the negative reinforcement explanation for smoking, a set of ideas derived from popular self-help books, upon participants' cognitions and urges to smoke. Methods: Smokers (n = 205) undergoing standard stop-smoking treatment were randomised to receive either the experimental intervention, a brief intervention aimed at communicating the explanation or a control intervention, a video on the health risks of smoking. Single phase ErMexMn1−xO3 (Me = Cu, Fe; 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1) samples were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The differences between the doping effects on the Raman spectra and on the structural, magnetic, and thermal properties of the two systems have been systematically investigated. In the ErCuxMn1−xO3 system, lattice parameter a increases with doping, while lattice parameter c decreases. Nickel oxide–polypyrrole (NiO–PPy) composites for lithium-ion batteries were prepared by a chemical polymerization method with sodium p-toluenesulfonate as the dopant, Triton-X as the surfactant, and FeCl3 as the oxidant. The new composite material was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Nanosize conducting PPy particles with a cauliflower-like morphology were uniformly coated onto the surface of the NiO powder. The electrochemical results were improved for the NiO–PPy composite compared with the pristine NiO. After 30 cycles, the capacities of the NiO and the NiO–PPy composite were about 119 and 436 mAh·g …

The coupling effects of solution pH and ionic strength on boron rejection by nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were investigated. Two NF membranes (namely NF270 and NF90) and three RO membranes (namely BW30, SW30 and UTC80) were used to provide a full spectrum of NF/RO membranes. The rejection of boron by all five membranes was pH-dependent. The dependency of boron rejection on the feed solution pH became much more substantial as the nominal salt (sodium or calcium) rejection value of the membrane decreased. In this study, an investigation is carried out to analyse the earthquake induced pounding be-tween two insufficiently separated base isolated buildings considering the inelastic behaviour of the struc-tures’ response. The buildings are modelled as a four-story and a three-story system to simulate the structural behaviour. The resulting systems of second order constant coefficient equations are reformulated as a system of first order ordinary differential equations and solved using the ordinary differential equation solver of MATLAB. The effects of membrane fouling on the performance of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes with respect to boron rejection and permeate flux were investigated in this study. A nanofiltration (NF270) membrane and a reverse osmosis (BW30) membrane were used in this investigation. Four typical membrane fouling conditions were simulated under controlled laboratory conditions in a cross-flow membrane system using four model foulants including humic acid, sodium alginate, colloidal silica and CaSO4. Co3O4 mesoporous nanowires with average single crystalline grain sizes of about 8 nm, 12nm, 25 nm, and 45 nm were synthesized by sintering of microwave-assisted hydrothermal processed belt-Co(OH)2 precursors at 300–500 °C for 2 h. Microstructure analysis was conducted by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission SEM (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) to confirm the composition, structure, and orientation in the nanowires. Edge cracks in cold rolling of the thin strip affect the strip quality and productivity significantly. In this study, an experimental and mechanical investigation on microstructures has been carried out to study the edge crack formation during cold rolling of the thin strip. The effects of the feed material microstructures on the edge crack evolution were studied employing optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Exponential-family random graph models (ERGMs) provide a principled way to model and simulate features common in human social networks, such as propensities for homophily and friend-ofa- friend triad closure. We show that, without adjustment, ERGMs preserve density as network size increases. Density invariance is often not appropriate for social networks. We suggest a simple modification based on an offset which instead preserves the mean degree and accommodates changes in network composition asymptotically.
