Silicides And Composites Materials As Anodes For Lithium Ion Batteries, Jun-Mei Yan Nov 2005

Silicides And Composites Materials As Anodes For Lithium Ion Batteries, Jun-Mei Yan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The anode materials of Mg_(2)Si and MnSi were synthesized by mechanically activated annealing(MAA) techniques in this work and the in electrochemical performances were also studied.A series of composite materials of Mg_(2)Si and CNTs or CMS were prepared by ball-milling method respectively. The reversible capacities of the composites were higher than that of the pure Mg_(2)Si and pure carbon materials. The cyclic performances have been improved greatly by ball-milling of the Mg_(2)Si and carbon materials. Results show that ball-milling method is one kind of method to make alloy materials into practical use.

Stabilization Of Residual Soil With Rice Husk Ash And Cement, Hilmi Mahmud Jul 2005

Stabilization Of Residual Soil With Rice Husk Ash And Cement, Hilmi Mahmud

Hilmi Mahmud

Stabilization of residual soils is studied by chemically using cement and rice husk ash. Investigation includes the evaluation of such properties of the soil as compaction, strength, and X-ray diffraction. Test results show that both cement and rice husk ash reduce the plasticity of soils. In term of compactability, addition of rice husk ash and cement decreases the maximum dry density and increases the optimum moisture content. From the viewpoint of plasticity, compaction and strength characteristics, and economy, addition of 6-8% cement and 10-15% rice husk ash is recommended as an optimum amount. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Experimentation And Analysis Of Composite Scarf Joint, Benjamin M. Cook Mar 2005

Experimentation And Analysis Of Composite Scarf Joint, Benjamin M. Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Composite bonded scarf repairs were examined by experimentally measuring and analytically predicting the residual curing strains and strains due to mechanical loading. To accomplish this a three prong approach was used: a full strain field through a repaired laminate's thickness was measured for both a loaded specimen and a specimen with the residual strain released, models were developed for comparison to both states, and data was collected for large tensile test specimens at various stages of being scarf repaired. A ~14:1 straight scarfed one-inch wide specimen was used to collect Moire interferometry data to calculate a full strain field due …

Creep Behavior Of An Oxide/Oxide Composite With Monazite Coating At Elevated Temperatures, Sean S. Musil Mar 2005

Creep Behavior Of An Oxide/Oxide Composite With Monazite Coating At Elevated Temperatures, Sean S. Musil

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on experimental investigation of stress-rupture behavior (creep response) of an oxide/oxide composite in a cross-ply (0/90) lay-up at elevated temperature. The test material, Nextel 610/monazite/alumina composite, employs monazite, an oxidation-resistant interfacial coating designed to improve performance at elevated temperatures. The experimental program included monotonic tensile tests to failure and creep-rupture tests at elevated temperatures. Tensile tests served to establish an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) for the material. The ensuing creep-rupture tests involved stress levels at varying percentages of the UTS. Stress-rupture curves at 900 and 1100 degrees C were established. A family of creep curves for various …

Mechanics Of Composite Materials In Fuel Cell Systems, Kenneth Reifsnider, Xinyu Huang, G. Ju, Matthew Feshler, K. An Jan 2005

Mechanics Of Composite Materials In Fuel Cell Systems, Kenneth Reifsnider, Xinyu Huang, G. Ju, Matthew Feshler, K. An

Faculty Publications

The science and technology that are fundamental to the concept of composite materials are also the foundation for the construction and function of fuel cells and fuel cell systems. The present paper outlines this relationship in the context of the physics and chemistry that are enabled by the specific selection and arrangement of constituents of the “functional composite” fuel cell. General principles of operation are described, and fundamental issues are defined that must be addressed by the composites community if the fuel cell science and engineering is to advance. Examples of several types of functional composite fuel cells are presented, …

Microwave Permeability Of Co₂ Z Composites, Konstantin Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva, Z. W. Li, L. F. Chen Jan 2005

Microwave Permeability Of Co₂ Z Composites, Konstantin Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva, Z. W. Li, L. F. Chen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The microwave permittivity and permeability of Co2Z barium ferrite composite samples are measured as functions of frequency and volume fraction of the ferrite. Magnetostatic properties of the bulk ferrite are determined. This allows Snoek's law [J. L. Snoek, Physica 14, 204 (1948)] to be verified by comparing the microwave and magnetostatic Snoek's constants. The modification of Snoek's law for hexagonal ferrites suggested recently by Acher et al. [Phys. Rev. B 62, 11324 (2000)] is also verified. Acher's constant is found from microwave measurements to agree with the value calculated from the magnetostatic properties of bulk ferrite, but microwave and magnetostatic …

Damage Mechanics Of Composite Materials Using Fabric Tensors, Ziad N. Taqieddin Jan 2005

Damage Mechanics Of Composite Materials Using Fabric Tensors, Ziad N. Taqieddin

LSU Master's Theses

The major objective of this work is to relate continuum damage mechanics introduced through the concept of fabric tensors to composite materials within the framework of classical elasticity theory. A model of directional data-damage mechanics for composite materials is formulated using fabric tensors. In addition, a general hypothesis for damage mechanics is postulated. It is seen that the two available hypotheses of elastic strain equivalence and elastic energy equivalence may be obtained as special cases of the postulated general hypothesis. This general hypothesis is then used to derive the sought relationship between the damage tensor for composite materials and the …
