FSEC Energy Research Center®
The solar batch water heater is a fun project for the do-it yourselfer and provides an inexpensive hot water source for the back yard workshop or weekend cabin, It is easy to construct, costs only about $70 to build and produces water temperatures as high as 150 degrees F.
Remember, the batch heater is not designed to operate with pressurized water system and should not be connected to a city water supply. If you are looking for such a system, consider manufactured solar systems, which have been designed to meet strict standards and aesthetic considerations.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Remarks The "Allowable Stress Design" method has long been used for the design of steel structures in the United States. 1,2,3 Recently, the probability-based load and resistance factor design (LRFD) criteria have been successfully applied to the structural design of hot-rolled steel shapes and built-up members. 4,5,6 The AISI LRFD Specification is being developed as well for the design of structural members cold-formed from carbon and low alloy steels. 7-17 These design criteria can provide a more uniform degree of structural safety to achieve consistent reliability for different design situations. The probability-based design method is developed on …

Effects Of Collapse Settlement Of Fill On Reinforced Earth Walls, G. E. Blight
Effects Of Collapse Settlement Of Fill On Reinforced Earth Walls, G. E. Blight
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Two case histories illustrate the effects that collapse settlement of the fill forming a Reinforced Earth wall can have on the structure. Pre-requisites for collapse settlement are inadequate compaction, compaction at too low a water content, or a combination of these. Collapse settlement occurs subsequently when the water content of the fill is increased by infiltration. The effects of collapse settlement identified in this paper are: (i) a temporary release of friction on the reinforcing strips with the result that the wall facing moves outwards; and (ii) relative settlement between the fill and the wall facing with the result that …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A detailed investigation has been conducted to study the causes of severe and widespread damages in a town situated on a salt dome. The study includes a thorough assessment of ground conditions in the coastal plain surrounding the salt dome for possible utilization of the plain as redevelopment areas. Major geological features in the study area comprised of collapsible windblown sands which are underlain by salt rock in the old town and soft/loose sabkha deposits in the proposed redevelopment zones. It has been found that the extensive damages in the buildings and roads are primarily due to subsidence phenomenon associated …
Geotechnical Investigation Into Causes Of Failure Of A Gabion Retaining Wall, Edward A. Nowatzki, Brian P. Wrench
Geotechnical Investigation Into Causes Of Failure Of A Gabion Retaining Wall, Edward A. Nowatzki, Brian P. Wrench
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper describes the post-failure analysis of a 26m long x 4m high gabion retaining wall located in a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The wall had been built just beyond the toe of a natural slope with most of the gabion units resting on the bed of a small river. The river bed soils consisted of approximately 2.5 m of soft, dark-grey, silty clay underlain by massive granite bedrock. The water table at the toe of the wall was within 0.1 m of the river bed surface. Failure of the wall occurred over the weekend after backfilling to grade …
The Influence Of Thin Clay Layers On The Design And Performance Of A Flexible Cantilever Retaining Wall, R. Cameron, C. A. Carr
The Influence Of Thin Clay Layers On The Design And Performance Of A Flexible Cantilever Retaining Wall, R. Cameron, C. A. Carr
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This case study presents the methods that were used successfully to redesign and monitor the performance of a flexible cantilever retaining wall, incorporating an in situ support berm, at a site where thin, weak clay layers were detected in the foundation during construction. A potential mode of failure termed "berm-block sliding", where the retaining wall pushes out the entire support berm as a block along the clay layers, governed the design analysis. Evidence of presheared planes within the clay layers required that the design shear strength parameters be based on residual values. The clay had a significant cohesion component which …

Construction Of Road Embankments Over Very Soft Soil Using Band Drains And Preloading, John D. Nelson, Brian P. Wrench
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
As part of a new national road being constructed in South Africa an embankment was built over a deep deposit of very soft soil. To enhance stability the embankment was built in several stages and in order to reduce the time required for consolidation between stages, band drains were installed in the foundation soils. The soils were instrumented to monitor pore water pressure and settlement. The results of the monitoring phase showed that the band drains were effective and operated as designed. This paper presents the results of the monitoring and discusses the prediction of degree of consolidation from settlement …

Correlation Between The Actual And Predicted Settlements Of Structures At Nsukka, Nigeria, H. O. Chukweze
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper compares the measured and calculated settlements of two buildings and one concrete water tank founded on the red-weathered soils of Nsukka, Nigeria. Prior to actual construction of the structures the three sites were investigated, soil samples were collected and tested in the laboratory and the data collected were used to predict the total and differential settlements of the structures. Then permanent concrete slabs were established as bases at each of the three sites for observing other points. The theodolite was used at each of the sites to monitor the movements of each of the structures, starting from the …

Geotechnical Characterization Of Subsoil Deposits At Cairo, Mohamed A. El-Sohby, S. Ossama Mazen
Geotechnical Characterization Of Subsoil Deposits At Cairo, Mohamed A. El-Sohby, S. Ossama Mazen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
As a result of considering the historical aspects in Cairo subsoil at different stages of its development, soil deposits in the alluvial plain in Cairo area could be identified and classified on their origin into limited number of major types. Their distribution could be produced on maps on which classes of engineering significance are recognized. The boundaries between map units have been drawn separating areas of equal origin and characteristics. Verification of soil profile from field investigation indicated complete agreement with the previous characterization based on theoretical considerations.
Grouting A Water Tower Foundation In A Carbonate Formation, Dorairaja Raghu, David Antes, Joseph J. Lifrieri
Grouting A Water Tower Foundation In A Carbonate Formation, Dorairaja Raghu, David Antes, Joseph J. Lifrieri
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Grouting the cavities in cavernous carbonate formations is one of the techniques employed to achieve reliable bearing support for structures founded in and on such rock units. For this purpose, conventional exploration methods, such as test borings and geophysical measurements, can be employed to obtain the necessary subsurface data; but, they are usually limited in extent, expensive, time consuming, and can be misleading. These limitations can be overcome by employing percussion probing techniques. A case history is cited wherein percussion probing was successfully employed.
A Proposed Procedure For The Identification Of Dispersive Soils, H. J. Von M. Harmse, F. A. Gerber
A Proposed Procedure For The Identification Of Dispersive Soils, H. J. Von M. Harmse, F. A. Gerber
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The piping failure of the Senekal dam and many other small dams in South Africa, despite the use of apparently sound material and good control during construction, emphasizes the need for a method to unambiguously identify dispersive soils. Physical and chemical tests of one hundred and seventy soil samples were evaluated against the double hydrometer method, after removal of free salts. The chemical methods based on characterization of the exchange complex (CEC and ESP) gave consistently more reliable results than the physical tests, such as the pinhole, crumb and sticky point tests and even the double hydrometer test when free …

Field Observation And Finite Element Analysis Of A Subway Excavation, Roberto Azevedo, Luis Anibal Santos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper analyzes a braced excavation executed during the construction of Rio de Janeiro City subway along a street (Catete Street) in which several old and historical buildings existed and should be preserved. The excavation had an average depth of 13 meters and was executed almost ten years ago in a subsoil in which the principal problems were caused by a 6 meters thick loose sand layer, underlaid by a 4 meter thick silty organic clay layer. Several buildings were damaged and had to be repaired. The objective of this paper is to show that even using the incomplete laboratory …
C/Ku Band Satellite Television Reception System, Costas A. Economides
C/Ku Band Satellite Television Reception System, Costas A. Economides
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine and investigate the design of a satellite reception system able to receive most C and Ku band North American geostationary satellites' TV transmissions. The performance criterion used for the system design is based on a required demodulated video signal-to-noise ratio maintained for a specified percentage of time in conjunction with overall cost considerations.
Furthermore, a computer program written in FORTRAN 77 is developed, which among other functions lists the notified, operational, geostationary satellites in sight with their corresponding look angles, from any given location on the earth.
Bioavailable Phosphorus In The Bear River System, Utah, Kenneth Warren Barker
Bioavailable Phosphorus In The Bear River System, Utah, Kenneth Warren Barker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The bioavailable fraction of phosphorus (BAP) in the lower Bear River system waters was investigated. BAP plays a critical role as the limiting nutrient for algal production and eutrophication in proposed reservoirs in the Bear River system. The Bear River system has a hardness ranging between 180-240 mg/L as CaCO3 which significantly affects BAP.
BAP estimation was done by a modified Selenastrum capricornutum Printz Algal Assay Bottle Test. The algal bioassay is considered the best estimator of BAP because no chemical tests or indicator parameters are available. Autoclaving and UV radiation were found to be unacceptable means for sterilization …

Comparison Of Subsurface Cavity Investigations Using Earth Resistivity, Seismograph And Ground Penetrating Radar, Dennis M. Filler
Comparison Of Subsurface Cavity Investigations Using Earth Resistivity, Seismograph And Ground Penetrating Radar, Dennis M. Filler
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Sinkhole formation in the Central Florida area has become a serious problem. The subsurface exploration method for cavity detection is indeed needed prior to sinkhole development. this research study compares the effectiveness of earth resistivity, seismograph and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods in the detection of subsurface cavities. A resistivity instrument measures a material's resistance to electric currents. The seismograph measure the propagation velocity of a medium refracting compressional waves. The GPR transmits and receives electromagnetic pulses reflecting off subsurface interfaces.
Tests were conducted at two sites: a model test site at the University of central Florida, Orlando, and a …
