Active Fluids: Rheological Properties And Response To Light Of Suspensions Of Synechocystis Sp. Cpcc 534, Zahra Habibi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Despite our current understanding of active fluid mechanics, more knowledge is required to fully understand their rheological properties, response to light, and details of the interactions between cells in diluted suspensions.

The focus of this thesis is on investigating the rheological properties of suspensions of cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. CPCC 534 under shear, induced by stirring. Experiments were conducted at different stirring rates and results are compared with the stationary condition. A notable increase in growth and biomass of Synechocystis sp. under various shear conditions was observed and the yield was nearly doubled. Besides, the data showed Newtonian behavior for suspensions …

Implementation Of An Improved Image Enhancement Algorithm On Fpga, Prit Ghanshyambhai Patel Oct 2021

Implementation Of An Improved Image Enhancement Algorithm On Fpga, Prit Ghanshyambhai Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Image processing plays very crucial role in this digital human world and has rapidly evolved with the development of computers, mathematics and the real-life demand of variety of applications in wide range of areas. This wide range of areas includes remote sensing, machine/ robot vision, pattern recognition, medical diagnosis, video processing, military, agriculture, television, etc. Image processing has two important components which are image enhancement and information extraction. Since image enhancement works at the front end with the initial raw inputs, it works like a backbone in image processing. When it comes to implementing these image enhancement techniques and developing …

New Methods In Wavelet Analysis For Applications Of The Wavelet Transform, Jeffrey D. Williams Sep 2021

New Methods In Wavelet Analysis For Applications Of The Wavelet Transform, Jeffrey D. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

A commonality in the many applications and domains where signal processing (SP)is applied is the detection of events. Detection in SP requires the identification of the occurrence of an event, within a signal, and distinguishing the occurrence from no event. In a classical application of SP, seismologists seek to detect abnormalities in an electromagnetic (EM) signal to detect or not detect the occurrence of an earthquake, represented as an anomalous EM pulse. Since many signals are noisy, such as those produced by a seismograph, it can be challenging to distinguish a significant EM pulse from incident noise. In SP, smoothing …

Passive Method For 3d Reconstruction Of Human Jaw: Theory And Application., Mohamad Ghanoum Aug 2021

Passive Method For 3d Reconstruction Of Human Jaw: Theory And Application., Mohamad Ghanoum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oral dental applications based on visual data pose various challenges. There are problems with lighting (effect of saliva, tooth dis-colorization, gum texture, and other sources of specularity) and motion (even inevitable slight motions of the upper/ lower jaw may lead to errors far beyond the desired tolerance of sub-millimeter accuracy). Nowadays, the dental CAM systems have become more compromised and accurate to obtain the geometric data of the jaw from the active sensor (laser scanner). However, they have not met the expectations and the needs of dental professionals in many ways. The probes in these systems are bulky { even …

Simulation Of Fracture Strength Improvements Of A Human Proximal Femur Using Finite Element Analysis., Waleed Ebraheem Alim May 2021

Simulation Of Fracture Strength Improvements Of A Human Proximal Femur Using Finite Element Analysis., Waleed Ebraheem Alim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most common hip fracture in the elderly occurs as a result of a fall to the side with impact over the greater trochanter resulting in a fracture of the proximal femur. The fracture usually involves the femoral neck or the intertrochanteric region. It has recently been determined that the fracture crack of a hip fracture typically initiates on the superior-lateral cortex of the femoral neck and then propagates across the femoral neck, resulting in a complete fracture. The strength of the superior-lateral cortex of the femoral neck is likely determined by the combined properties of the generally thin cortex …

Optical Study Of 2-D Detonation Wave Stability, Eulaine T. Grodner Mar 2021

Optical Study Of 2-D Detonation Wave Stability, Eulaine T. Grodner

Theses and Dissertations

Fundamental optical detonation study of detonations constricted to a 2-d plane propagation, and detonations propagating around a curve. All images were processed using modern image processing techniques. The optical techniques used were shadowgraph, Schlieren, and chemiluminescence. In the 2-Dstraight channels, it was determined wave stability was a factor of cell size. It was also determined the detonation wave thickness (area between the combustion and shockwave) was a factor of how much heat available for the detonation. For the detonations propagating around a curve, it was determined the three main classifications of wave stability were stable, unstable, and detonation wave restart. …

Correlating With Local Variation In Collagen Level And Mechanical Properties Of The Heart Tissues, Talayeh Tavangar Jan 2021

Correlating With Local Variation In Collagen Level And Mechanical Properties Of The Heart Tissues, Talayeh Tavangar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The determination of the myocardium's tissue properties is essential in constructing finite element (FE) models of the heart. To obtain accurate results, especially for functionally modeling the heart, we must determine the tissue properties in-vivo. The calculation of the heart tissue properties remains a challenging area as it is categorized as a heterogeneous, anisotropic, nonlinear soft tissue that undergoes large deformation. In this work, we tried to introduce and evaluated a finite element method to determine the mechanical properties of the cardiac tissue. The introduced method combined a finite element modeling with the experimentally obtained images from the left and …

Facilitating Analysis Of Toxoplasma Gondii Bradyzoite Metabolic Activity Via Image Processing And Multivariate Logistic Regression For High Throughput Classification Of Mitochondrial Morphologies, Brooke Place Jan 2021

Facilitating Analysis Of Toxoplasma Gondii Bradyzoite Metabolic Activity Via Image Processing And Multivariate Logistic Regression For High Throughput Classification Of Mitochondrial Morphologies, Brooke Place

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Approximately a third of the population worldwide is chronically infected by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. During chronic infection the parasite resides within tissue cysts as the poorly understood bradyzoite form. Observation of these bradyzoites via microscopic imaging within tissue cyst purified from infected mouse brains has shown metabolic activity with heterogeneous replication potential. With fluorescence microscopy imaging targeting the parasite’s actively respiring mitochondria, the parasite’s metabolic state can be further investigated as the morphology of mitochondria can be associated with specific physiologic states. However, manually classifying mitochondrial morphologies from these images can be tedious and prone to error as …
