Blokus Game Solver, Chin Chao Dec 2018

Blokus Game Solver, Chin Chao

Computer Engineering

Blokus (officially pronounced as “Block us”) is an abstract strategy board game with transparent Tetris-shaped, color pieces that players are trying to place onto the board. However, the players can only place a piece that touches at least one corner of their own pieces on the board. The ultimate goal of the game is to place as many pieces onto the board as a player can while blocking off the opponent’s ability to place more pieces onto the board. Each player has pieces with different shapes and sizes that can be placed onto the board, where each block within a …

Integration Of Robotic Perception, Action, And Memory, Li Yang Ku Oct 2018

Integration Of Robotic Perception, Action, And Memory, Li Yang Ku

Doctoral Dissertations

In the book "On Intelligence", Hawkins states that intelligence should be measured by the capacity to memorize and predict patterns. I further suggest that the ability to predict action consequences based on perception and memory is essential for robots to demonstrate intelligent behaviors in unstructured environments. However, traditional approaches generally represent action and perception separately---as computer vision modules that recognize objects and as planners that execute actions based on labels and poses. I propose here a more integrated approach where action and perception are combined in a memory model, in which a sequence of actions can be planned based on …

Materials Engineering, Switching Mechanism And Novel Applications Of Memristive Devices, Hao Jiang Mar 2018

Materials Engineering, Switching Mechanism And Novel Applications Of Memristive Devices, Hao Jiang

Doctoral Dissertations

Memristive devices have attracted tremendous interests because of their highly desirable properties such as a simple structure, low switching voltage, fast switching speed, excellent scalability, multiple conductance states and great compatibility with the Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor technology. Hence, they stand out as promising candidates for next-generation non-volatile memory and electronic synapses in artificial neural network. This thesis reports systematic studies of the memristive switching phenomena in oxide based material systems, in aspects of materials engineering, switching mechanism and novel applications. We demonstrated efficient ways of engineering device performances such as metal doping and further presented a highly reliable hafnium oxide based …

Human Activity Tracking And Recognition Using Kinect Sensor, Roanna Lun Jan 2018

Human Activity Tracking And Recognition Using Kinect Sensor, Roanna Lun

ETD Archive

The objective of this dissertation research is to use Kinect sensor, a motion sensing input device, to develop an integrated software system that can be used for tracking non-compliant activity postures of consented health-care workers for assisting the workers' compliance to best practices, allowing individualized gestures for privacy-aware user registration, movement recognition using rule-based algorithm, real-time feedback, and exercises data collection. The research work also includes developing a graphical user interface and data visualization program for illustrating statistical information for administrator, as well as utilizing cloud based database system used for data resource.

A Framework To Understand Emoji Meaning: Similarity And Sense Disambiguation Of Emoji Using Emojinet, Sanjaya Wijeratne Jan 2018

A Framework To Understand Emoji Meaning: Similarity And Sense Disambiguation Of Emoji Using Emojinet, Sanjaya Wijeratne

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Pictographs, commonly referred to as `emoji’, have become a popular way to enhance electronic communications. They are an important component of the language used in social media. With their introduction in the late 1990’s, emoji have been widely used to enhance the sentiment, emotion, and sarcasm expressed in social media messages. They are equally popular across many social media sites including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In 2015, Instagram reported that nearly half of the photo comments posted on Instagram contain emoji, and in the same year, Twitter reported that the `face with tears of joy’ emoji has been tweeted 6.6 …

Mitigation Of Environmental Hazards Of Sulfide Mineral Flotation With An Insight Into Froth Stability And Flotation Performance, Muhammad Badar Hayat Jan 2018

Mitigation Of Environmental Hazards Of Sulfide Mineral Flotation With An Insight Into Froth Stability And Flotation Performance, Muhammad Badar Hayat

Doctoral Dissertations

"Today's major challenges facing the flotation of sulfide minerals involve constant variability in the ore composition; environmental concerns; water scarcity and inefficient plant performance. The present work addresses these challenges faced by the flotation process of complex sulfide ore of Mississippi Valley type with an insight into the froth stability and the flotation performance. The first project in this study was aimed at finding the optimum conditions for the bulk flotation of galena (PbS) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) through Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In the second project, an attempt was made to replace toxic sodium cyanide (NaCN) with the biodegradable chitosan …

Application Of Machine Learning On Fracture Interference, Dennis Wayne Chamberlain Jr. Jan 2018

Application Of Machine Learning On Fracture Interference, Dennis Wayne Chamberlain Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A method has been developed that locates and determines well-to-well hydraulic fracture interference (frac-hit) in shale plays using hard data. This method uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) with designated parameters and target outputs in conjunction with graphs of gas flowrate, tubing pressure, and cumulative gas prediction. The method was created to address the significant increase in frac-hit occurrences due to the infill wells being completed in shale plays. The production data of the well is first cleaned to eliminate outliers in the initial timeframe of the well and periods of no production so that the ANN model can be accurately …
