Development Of A Motor Speed Control System Using Matlab And Simulink, Implemented With A Digital Signal Processor, Andrew Klee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes an improved methodology for embedded software development. MATLAB and Simulink allow engineers to simplify algorithm development and avoid duplication of effort in deploying these algorithms to the end hardware. Special new hardware targeting capabilities of MATLAB and Simulink are described in detail. A motor control system design served to demonstrate the efficacy of this new method. Initial data was collected to help model the motor in Simulink. This allowed for the design of the open and closed loop control systems. The designed system was very effective, with good response and no steady state error. The entire design …

Autonomous Repair Of Optical Character Recognition Data Through Simple Voting And Multi-Dimensional Indexing Techniques, Christopher Sprague Jan 2005

Autonomous Repair Of Optical Character Recognition Data Through Simple Voting And Multi-Dimensional Indexing Techniques, Christopher Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The three major optical character recognition (OCR) engines (ExperVision, Scansoft OCR, and Abby OCR) in use today are all capable of recognizing text at near perfect percentages. The remaining errors however have proven very difficult to identify within a single engine. Recent research has shown that a comparison between the errors of the three engines proved to have very little correlation, and thus, when used in conjunction, may be useful to increase accuracy of the final result. This document discusses the implementation and results of a simple voting system designed to prove the hypothesis and show a statistical improvement in …

Famtile: An Algorithm For Learning High-Level Tactical Behavior From Observation, Brian Stensrud Jan 2005

Famtile: An Algorithm For Learning High-Level Tactical Behavior From Observation, Brian Stensrud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on the learning of a class of behaviors defined as high-level behaviors. High-level behaviors are defined here as behaviors that can be executed using a sequence of identifiable behaviors. Represented by low-level contexts, these behaviors are known a priori to learning and can be modeled separately by a knowledge engineer. The learning task, which is achieved by observing an expert within simulation, then becomes the identification and representation of the low-level context sequence executed by the expert. To learn this sequence, this research proposes FAMTILE - the Fuzzy ARTMAP / Template-Based Interpretation Learning Engine. This algorithm attempts …

A Comparative Analysis Between Context-Based Reasoning (Cxbr) And Contextual Graphs (Cxgs)., Peterson Marthen Lorins Jan 2005

A Comparative Analysis Between Context-Based Reasoning (Cxbr) And Contextual Graphs (Cxgs)., Peterson Marthen Lorins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Context-based Reasoning (CxBR) and Contextual Graphs (CxGs) involve the modeling of human behavior in autonomous and decision-support situations in which optimal human decision-making is of utmost importance. Both formalisms use the notion of contexts to allow the implementation of intelligent agents equipped with a context sensitive knowledge base. However, CxBR uses a set of discrete contexts, implying that models created using CxBR operate within one context at a given time interval. CxGs use a continuous context-based representation for a given problem-solving scenario for decision-support processes. Both formalisms use contexts dynamically by continuously changing between necessary contexts as needed in appropriate …

Coalition Formation In Multi-Agent Uav Systems, Paul Dejong Jan 2005

Coalition Formation In Multi-Agent Uav Systems, Paul Dejong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coalitions are collections of agents that join together to solve a common problem that either cannot be solved individually or can be solved more efficiently as a group. Each individual agent has capabilities that can benefit the group when working together as a coalition. Typically, individual capabilities are joined together in an additive way when forming a coalition. This work will introduce a new operator that is used when combining capabilities, and suggest that the behavior of the operator is contextual, depending on the nature of the capability itself. This work considers six different capabilities of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) …

Differential Radio Link Protocol: An Improvement To Tcp Over Wireless Networks, Jaideep Sarkar Jan 2005

Differential Radio Link Protocol: An Improvement To Tcp Over Wireless Networks, Jaideep Sarkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New generations of wireless cellular networks, including 3G and 4G technologies, are envisaged to support more mobile users and a variety of wireless multimedia services. With an increasing demand for wireless multimedia services, the performance of TCP becomes a bottleneck as it cannot differentiate between the losses due to the nature of air as a medium and high data load on the network that leads to congestion. This misinterpretation by TCP leads to a reduction in the congestion window size thereby resulting in reduced throughput of the system. To overcome this scenario Radio Link Protocols are used at a lower …

Explanations In Contextual Graphs: A Solution To Accountability In Knowledge Based Systems, Brian W. Sherwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order for intelligent systems to be a viable and utilized tool, a user must be able to understand how the system comes to a decision. Without understanding how the system arrived at an answer, a user will be less likely to trust its decision. One way to increase a user's understanding of how the system functions is by employing explanations to account for the output produced. There have been attempts to explain intelligent systems over the past three decades. However, each attempt has had shortcomings that separated the logic used to produce the output and that used to produce …

Design And Synthesis Of Clockless Pipelines Based On Self-Resetting Stage Logic, Abdelhalim Alsharqawi Jan 2005

Design And Synthesis Of Clockless Pipelines Based On Self-Resetting Stage Logic, Abdelhalim Alsharqawi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For decades, digital design has been primarily dominated by clocked circuits. With larger scales of integration made possible by improved semiconductor manufacturing techniques, relying on a clock signal to orchestrate logic operations across an entire chip became increasingly difficult. Motivated by this problem, designers are currently considering circuits which can operate without a clock. However, the wide acceptance of these circuits by the digital design community requires two ingredients: (i) a unified design methodology supported by widely available CAD tools, and (ii) a granularity of design techniques suitable for synthesizing large designs. Currently, there is no unified established design methodology …

Off-Chip Communications Architectures For High Throughput Network Processors, Jacob Engel Jan 2005

Off-Chip Communications Architectures For High Throughput Network Processors, Jacob Engel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we present off-chip communications architectures for line cards to increase the throughput of the currently used memory system. In recent years there is a significant increase in memory bandwidth demand on line cards as a result of higher line rates, an increase in deep packet inspection operations and an unstoppable expansion in lookup tables. As line-rate data and NPU processing power increase, memory access time becomes the main system bottleneck during data store/retrieve operations. The growing demand for memory bandwidth contrasts the notion of indirect interconnect methodologies. Moreover, solutions to the memory bandwidth bottleneck are limited by …
