Finite Element Methods For Nonlinear Static Analysis Of Sandwich Plates, Damin J. Siler

A finite element method, developed for static analysis of composite plates, was enhanced to be used with sandwich plates. The theory considers geometric nonlinearity and transverse shear. Furthermore, a new postprocessor was written to check for initial failure using the maximum stress criteria. It also includes a procedure for evaluating transverse normal stresses by enforcing equilibrium. The code modifications for sandwiches were verified by comparing finite element solutions to closed-form sandwich theories. Both methods showed good correlation. This study compared numerical collapse results of graphite-epoxy cylindrical panels with free vertical edges undergoing axial compression for three different shell theories. Symmetric quasi-isotropic laminates were investigated using solid panels and panels with five different centralized cutouts with three thicknesses. The theories compared in the study were the Simplified Large displacement moderate Rotation (SLR) theory, the Donnell Cylindrical Shell (Modified Donnell) theory, and the Classical Donnell theory. The purpose of the study was to determine when large rotations and through-the-thickness shear become important in the numerical collapse analysis of cylindrical composite shells. Soil nail walls are a form of mechanical earth stabilization for cut situations. They consist of the introduction of passive inclusions (nails) into soil cut lifts. These nailed lifts are then tied together with a structural facing (usually shotcrete) . The wall lifts are constructed incrementally from the top of cut down. Soil nail walls are being recognized as having potential for large cost savings over other alternatives. In the author's previous work entitled "General Theorems of Topological Variations of Elastic Structures and the Method of Topological Variation," 1985, some interesting properties of skeletal structures have been discovered. These properties have been described as five theorems and synthesized as a theory, called the theory of structural variations (TSV). Based upon this theory, an innovative analysis tool, called the structural variation method (SVM), has been derived for static analysis of skeletal structures (one-dimensional finite element systems).

This study is aimed at the development of a computational technique for the prediction of the flow field in wide angle diffusers. The finite element technique is used for the solution of the governing equations. A commercial software package, NISA/3DFlUID, modified for this specific application was used. This paper presents a general algorithm, using IDEAS programmability features to integrate different phases of shape optimization process. The present work is mainly concentrated on planar structures, defined by thin or shell finite elements. Interactive programs are generated to convert input data to geometric models, to define mesh areas, to generate finite element mesh and to execute adaptive mesh refinement techniques. The importance of automated mesh generation and refinement is highlighted and various optimization methods are considered.
