An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Total Quality Management In A Service Organization, Charles Stanford Stevens Oct 1993

An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Total Quality Management In A Service Organization, Charles Stanford Stevens

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research consists of a formative evaluation designed to identify the steps necessary to revitalize a formerly successful Total Quality Management (TQM) process at a U.S. Navy engineering and logistics support organization. The research also developed a methodology to account for the fact that the investigator is a well-informed insider who served as one of the principle change agents for the TQM implementation.

The research is based on the researcher's observation that the major cause for the waning implementation was due to senior management and leadership issues and the organization-wide processes with which they interface. The investigation consisted of an …

Boundary Value Problems In Rectilinearly Anisotropic Thermoelastic Solids, Gilbert Kerr Jul 1993

Boundary Value Problems In Rectilinearly Anisotropic Thermoelastic Solids, Gilbert Kerr

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The boundary value problems which are considered are the type that arise due to the presence of a Griffith crack (or cracks) in an anisotropic thermoelastic solid. The thermoelastic field, in such materials, when the infinitesimal theory is employed, is governed by a set of elliptic partial differential equations. The general solution of these equations is expressed in terms of arbitrary analytic functions whose real parts, in turn, are expressed in terms of Fourier type integrals or Fourier series. Integral transform techniques are then used to determine the stress intensity factors (and other pertinent information) for various crack geometries. In …

Boundary Layer Influences On The Subsonic Near-Wake Of A Family Of Three-Dimensional Bluff Bodies, Charles Willliam Alcorn Jul 1993

Boundary Layer Influences On The Subsonic Near-Wake Of A Family Of Three-Dimensional Bluff Bodies, Charles Willliam Alcorn

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A study is reported on subsonic bluff body near-wake flows. It has been determined that one family of bluff bodies, namely slanted-base ogive cylinders, can experience either a closed recirculating near-wake, or a longitudinal vortex near-wake depending on the base slant-angle and the Reynolds number. This suggests a dependence of near-wake parameters on the state of the boundary layer ahead of separation. This report addresses the influence of the boundary layer on the near-wake of slanted-base bluff bodies. Experiments were conducted in two facilities, the 6-inch Magnetic Suspension and Balance System (MSBS) at NASA Langley Research Center and the Old …

A Multivariate Quality Control Approach For Automated Manufacturing Systems, Hisham Naim Ashur Jul 1993

A Multivariate Quality Control Approach For Automated Manufacturing Systems, Hisham Naim Ashur

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In today's competitive manufacturing environment, effective and practical statistical quality control approaches are essential. A successful process control approach needs to provide on line real time monitoring of quality related characteristics.

No longer acceptable is an approach that analyzes quality related data only after the product is produced. A statistical process control approach that monitors the process during production and that reports trouble spots before bad products are made is necessary in an automated manufacturing environment.

An automated manufacturing environment is characterized by high volume production runs and short production cycles. Traditional statistical process control approaches are not capable of …

A Computer-Based Strategy To Facilitate Organizational Learning Process, Charles B. Keating

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research investigated the development of Organizational Learning Process (OLP) through the application of a computer-based strategy in an organizational setting. OLP is developed from the organizational learning literature as an integration of similar concepts of organizational processes of inquiry essential to organizational learning. These concepts included: organizational dialectic (Argyris and Schon 1978), surfacing and testing mental models (Senge 1990a,1990b), and interpretation process (Daft and Weick 1984). A qualitative research methodology was developed within a participatory action research framework (Whyte 1989). A six phase research project, designed as a computer-based strategy to generate OLP, was applied in an organizational setting. …

Studies On Nonequilibrium Phenomena In Supersonic Chemically Reacting Flows, Rajnish Chandrasekhar Jul 1993

Studies On Nonequilibrium Phenomena In Supersonic Chemically Reacting Flows, Rajnish Chandrasekhar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study deals with a systematic investigation of nonequilibrium processes in supersonic combustion. The two-dimensional, elliptic Navier-Stokes equations are used to investigate supersonic flows with nonequilibrium chemistry and thermodynamics, coupled with radiation, for hydrogen-air systems. The explicit, unsplit MacCormack finite-difference scheme is used to advance the governing equations in time, until convergence is achieved.

For a basic understanding of the flow physics, premixed flows undergoing finite rate chemical reactions are investigated. Results obtained for specific conditions indicate that the radiative interactions vary substantially, depending on reactions involving HO$\sb2$ and NO species, and that this can have a noticeable influence on …

Fiber Enhanced Viscoelastic Damping Polymers And Their Application To Passive Vibration Control, Houchun Xia Jul 1993

Fiber Enhanced Viscoelastic Damping Polymers And Their Application To Passive Vibration Control, Houchun Xia

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new composite damping material is investigated, which consists of a viscoelastic matrix and high elastic modulus fiber inclusions. This fiber enhanced viscoelastic damping polymer is intended to be applied to light-weight flexible structures as surface treatment for passive vibration control. A desirable packing geometry for the composite material is proposed, which is expected to produce maximum shear strain in the viscoelastic damping matrix. Subsequently, a micromechanical model is established in which the effect of fiber segment length and relative motion between neighboring fibers are taken into account. Based on this model, closed form expressions for the effective storage and …

Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha Apr 1993

Recognition Of Quadric Surfaces From Range Data: An Analytical Approach, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, a new technique based on analytic geometry for the recognition and description of three-dimensional quadric surfaces from range images is presented. Beginning with the explicit representation of quadrics, a set of ten coefficients are determined for various three-dimensional surfaces. For each quadric surface, a unique set of two-dimensional curves which serve as a feature set is obtained from the various angles at which the object is intersected with a plane. Based on a discriminant method, each of the curves is classified as a parabola, circle, ellipse, hyperbola, or a line. Each quadric surface is shown to be …

Influence Of Processing Techniques On Copper Deep Levels Formation And On Photoconductivity In Silicon Doped Gallium Arsenide, Lucy M. Thomas Apr 1993

Influence Of Processing Techniques On Copper Deep Levels Formation And On Photoconductivity In Silicon Doped Gallium Arsenide, Lucy M. Thomas

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Diffusion of copper in silicon doped gallium arsenide under different diffusion conditions is studied. Copper compensated silicon doped gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) is used as switch material for bulk optically controlled semiconductor switch, and on-state photoconductivity of the switch is primarily due to the properties of the copper deep levels introduced in the material during diffusion. Gallium arsenide being a compound semiconductor, presence of vacancies and defects make the study of diffusion a complex process. The objective of the current research is twofold: a) to study the influence of diffusion conditions and processing techniques on copper deep level formation in silicon …

Competitive Enzyme Immunoassay By Polyclonal Antibodies Against Organophosphorus Pesticides, Kuo-Lan Wen Apr 1993

Competitive Enzyme Immunoassay By Polyclonal Antibodies Against Organophosphorus Pesticides, Kuo-Lan Wen

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Organophosphorus compounds (OPs) comprise one of the major classes of pesticides in use today because they are highly effective and less toxic. Because of their extensive use, there is a need for monitoring OPs in water and vegetables. Gas chromatography (GC) is the usual method for OPs screening, but it is time-consuming and has the high cost of instrumentation. The goal of this project was to find an easy method which was sensitive and had less instrumentation required to test OPs.

Microwells and microtubes were utilized as the solid-phase immobilization for the development of an enzyme immunoassay for OPs. A …

A Sociotechnical Approach To The Study Of Semiautonomous Work Group Communication In Technical Organizations, Elizabeth B. Varnes

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The sociotechnical aspects of group communication in semiautonomous technical work teams were investigated to understand how team members define "effective" group communication and what impact technical tools have on the group communication process. A team of workers with various technical backgrounds was selected for study. The study involved videotaped group sessions, a group training educational briefing and individual group member questionnaires. The results indicate that group members believed sharing information among group members was critical to successful communication and that certain technical tools could be effective during group meetings. The findings are congruent with the general theory that group communication …

The Effects Of Electron Radiation On The Glass Transition Temperature Of A Polyetherimide, Kristen Tulloch Kern Apr 1993

The Effects Of Electron Radiation On The Glass Transition Temperature Of A Polyetherimide, Kristen Tulloch Kern

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The effects of electron radiation on a polyetherimide (PEI), Ultem*, were investigated. In particular, the changes in the glass transition temperature (Tg) with absorbed radiation dose were studied. The polymer was exposed to mono-energetic beams of 100-keV electrons and 1.0-MeV electrons for doses up to 100 megagray (MGy). Dosimetry for the exposures was based on Monte-Carlo simulations of the transfer of energy from an energetic electron to the polymer and on comparison to Nylon standards. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to determine the (Tg) for non-exposed PEI and the changes in (Tg) resulting from …

Robust Control Of Nonlinear Multibody Flexible Space Structures, Atul G. Kelkar Apr 1993

Robust Control Of Nonlinear Multibody Flexible Space Structures, Atul G. Kelkar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A generic nonlinear math model of a multibody flexible system is developed. Asymptotic stability of such systems using dissipative compensators is established. It is proved that, under certain conditions, this class of systems exhibit global asymptotic stability under dissipative compensation. The dissipative compensators considered are static as well as dynamic dissipative compensators. The stability proofs are based on passivity approaches, Lyapunov methods, as well as a key property of such systems, i.e., skew-symmetricity of certain matrix. The importance of the stability results obtained is that the stability is robust to parametric uncertainties and modeling errors.

For static dissipative compensators, it …

Navier-Stokes Simulation Of Quasi-Axisymmetric And Three-Dimensional Supersonic Vortex Breakdown, Hamdy A. Kandil Apr 1993

Navier-Stokes Simulation Of Quasi-Axisymmetric And Three-Dimensional Supersonic Vortex Breakdown, Hamdy A. Kandil

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computational simulation of supersonic vortex breakdown is considered for internal and external flow applications. The interaction of a supersonic swirling flow with a shock wave in bounded and unbounded domains is studied. The problem is formulated using the unsteady, compressible, full Navier-Stokes equations which are solved using an implicit, flux-difference splitting, finite-volume scheme. Solutions are obtained for quasi-axisymmetric and three-dimensional flows. The quasi-axisymmetric solutions are obtained by forcing the components of the flowfield vector to be equal on two axial planes, which are in close proximity to each other. For the flow in a bounded domain, a supersonic swirling flow …

A Performance Prediction Model For A Fault-Tolerant Computer During Recovery And Restoration, Rodrigo A. Obando Apr 1993

A Performance Prediction Model For A Fault-Tolerant Computer During Recovery And Restoration, Rodrigo A. Obando

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The modeling and design of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor system is addressed in this dissertation. In particular, the behavior of the system during recovery and restoration after a fault has occurred is investigated. Given that a multicomputer system is designed using the Algorithm to Architecture To Mapping Model (ATAMM) model, and that a fault (death of a computing resource) occurs during its normal steady-state operation, a model is presented as a viable research tool for predicting the performance bounds of the system during its recovery and restoration phases. Furthermore, the bounds of the performance behavior of the system during this transient …

Cross-Cultural Issues In The Management Of German-Owned Business Subsidiaries In Hampton Roads, Teja Ulrich Apr 1993

Cross-Cultural Issues In The Management Of German-Owned Business Subsidiaries In Hampton Roads, Teja Ulrich

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

'Culture' can be described as patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that distinguish one cultural group from another. Cultural diversity is therefore likely to introduce variety to organizations in which individuals from different national backgrounds are working together. Although this variety bears the potential for an improvement of the cognitive development in the organizations, managers of multicultural business organizations tend to perceive cultural diversity as a disadvantage. This thesis attempts to identify the impact of cultural differences between Germans and Americans on organizations in which German managers work with American employees. German managers of eight business subsidiaries in the Hampton …

Grid Sensitivity For Aerodynamic Optimization And Flow Analysis, Ideen Sadrehaghighi Apr 1993

Grid Sensitivity For Aerodynamic Optimization And Flow Analysis, Ideen Sadrehaghighi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm is developed to obtain the grid sensitivity with respect to design parameters for aerodynamic optimization. Two distinct parameterization procedures are developed for investigating the grid sensitivity with respect to design parameters of a wing-section as an example. The first procedure is based on traditional (physical) relations defining NACA four-digit wing-sections. The second is advocating a novel (geometrical) parameterization using spline functions such as NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) for defining the wing-section geometry. An inter-active algebraic grid generation technique, known as Two-Boundary Grid Generation (TBGG) is employed to generate C-type grids around wing-sections. The grid sensitivity of the domain …

The Influence Of Reynolds Number And Atmospheric Effects On Aircraft Wake Vortices Near The Ground, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng Apr 1993

The Influence Of Reynolds Number And Atmospheric Effects On Aircraft Wake Vortices Near The Ground, Zhongquan Charlie Zheng

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aircraft wakes represent potential hazards which can control aircraft spacing and thus limit airport capacity. Wake vortex trajectories and strengths are altered radically by interactions with the ground plane and by atmospheric conditions. This work has been concerned with developing more accurate numerical predictions. A two-dimensional, unsteady numerical-theoretical study is presented which has included viscous effects, the influence of stratification, crosswind and turbulence on vortex behavior near the ground plane, using a vorticity-streamfunction formulation.

A two-parameter perturbation procedure has been developed which uses analytic solutions for the initial flow field to accommodate the ground effect region in the numerical simulation. …

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke Jan 1993

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In electronic systems, it is interesting to understand exactly how the reliability is changing with time. Dynamic performance changes when a system passes from infant mortality stage into useful life phase and when the system passes from useful life phase into wearout phase. Dynamic performance also changes when the system is redesigned or when the system is acted on by a number of other outside forces such as a change in maintenance policy, escalation of alignment problems, or a change in training program. It is important to know when a system is changing dynamically in order to assess design, policy …

Multidimensional Approach To Implementation Of Continuous Process Improvement Utilizing Small Run Analysis In A Shipyard Environment, Paul Ray Hollandsworth

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nationally, both public and private shipyards are experiencing a high rework rate (over 40%) in the fabrication of plug connectors used for electronic systems onboard Navy vessels. The shipyard's survival depends on acquiring the elements necessary to maintain a major industry in a position of continuous improvement that produces a better product than their competitors, at less cost, in a safe manner, and on schedule.

This research addresses the complex problem of how to introduce quality control methodologies within a job shop environment that assists in identifying variables that influence the rework rate of plug fabrication process over a four …

Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao Jan 1993

Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

American industries are in the process of a quality revolution. Most companies are busy implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) programs. However, the experience of both Japanese and American companies indicates that successful TQM implementation depends on an understanding of implementation processes, which itself relies on an understanding of organizational self-organizing, for it is through this process that TQM gets diffused and becomes a core component of an organization's culture. Self-organizing is a so-called process-oriented approach, based on theory from cybernetics (Ashby, 1962; Steier & Smith, 1985; von Foerster, 1960), dissipative structure theory (Prigogine & Stengers, 1984), and chaos theory (Gleick, …

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan Jan 1993

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Once a control structure for an integrated manufacturing system is decided upon, manufacturing activities are limited by that structure. A flexible control structure is presented as an approach for accommodating a variety of manufacturing activities, without being limited to a single control structure. A flexible control structure is one that allows multiple types of control structure in the manufacturing process. For example, both hierarchical and non-hierarchical structures may be used in a flexible structure. The properties of a flexible control structure are discussed from the point of view of graph theory.

Control structures for automated manufacturing are difficult to evaluate …

Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell Jan 1993

Theoretical Results Supporting The Use Of Passive Damping As Augmentation To The Active Control Of Flexible Structures, Joseph Vincent Harrell

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One challenge of modern control technology is how to control a flexible structure with accuracy, speed, and economy of effort. Controlling a structure with many degrees of freedom by purely active means implies the implementation of inordinate sensors and actuators and creates the need for numerous calculations that must be done instantly. Experiments have shown that practical structures under active control alone can suffer instabilities due to modal vibrations beyond the bandwidth of the active controller. Furthermore, if there is a high degree of model uncertainty, instabilities can be produced by inputs of modal vibrations not occurring in the system …
