Introduction To The Sydney Soil Model, Martin D. Liu, John P. Carter, David W. Airey Jan 2012

Introduction To The Sydney Soil Model, Martin D. Liu, John P. Carter, David W. Airey

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In this paper a new constitutive model recently suggested by the authors, referred to as the Sydney Soil model, is introduced. The Sydney Soil Model is formulated within the framework of Critical State Soil Mechanics and is suitable for describing the behaviour of structured soils including both clays and sands. In the proposed model, the mechanical behaviour of soil is divided into two parts, that at a reference state and that attributed to the influence of soil structure. The reference state behaviour is formulated according to the soil properties at the critical state of deformation, based on the concept of …

Introduction To The Geant4 Simulation Toolkit, Susanna Guatelli, D Cutajar, Bradley Oborn, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Geant4 is a Monte Carlo simulation Toolkit, describing the interactions of particles with matter. Geant4 is widely used in radiation physics research, from High Energy Physics, to medical physics and space science, thanks to its sophisticated physics component, coupled with advanced functionality in geometry description. Geant4 is widely used at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP), at the University of Wollongong, to characterise and optimise novel detector concepts, radiotherapy treatments, and imaging solutions. This lecture consists of an introduction to Monte Carlo method, and to Geant4. Particular attention will be devoted to the Geant4 physics component, and to the …

Enhancement Of The Capacitance In Tio2 Nanotubes Through Controlled Introduction Of Oxygen Vacancies, Maryam Salari, Konstantin K. Konstantinov, Hua-Kun Liu Jan 2011

Enhancement Of The Capacitance In Tio2 Nanotubes Through Controlled Introduction Of Oxygen Vacancies, Maryam Salari, Konstantin K. Konstantinov, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The many applications of high energy storage devices have forged an increasing interest in research areas related to electrochemical capacitors. Here, in this work, we present a facile method for the fabrication of self-organized titania nanotubes grown by anodic oxidation of titanium foil with different subsequent heat-treatment regimes for use as binder-free working electrodes in supercapacitor applications. The capacitance of these highly ordered titania nanotubes, when exposed to a reductive atmosphere during annealing, was determined to be well above 900 µF cm−2, confirming that the capacitance contribution was pseudocapacitive in nature. The behaviour of oxygen depleted titania in …

Introduction - A Review Of Membrane Reactors, Fausto Gallucci, Angelo Basile, Faisal Ibney Hai Jan 2011

Introduction - A Review Of Membrane Reactors, Fausto Gallucci, Angelo Basile, Faisal Ibney Hai

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the last decades, membrane catalysis has been studied by several research and the significant progress in this field is summarized in several review articles (Armor 1998, Lin 2001, Lu 2007, Mcleary 2006, Sanchez 2002, Saracco 1994, Shu 1991). Considering a IUPAC definition (Koros 1996), a membrane reactor (MR) is a device for simultaneously performing a reaction (steam reforming, dry reforming, autothermal reforming, etc.) and a membrane-based separation in the same physical device. Therefore, the membrane not only plays the role of a separator, but also takes place in the reaction itself. The term Membrane Bioreactor (MBR), on the other …

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Simulation Analysis, Paul Savory Oct 1999

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Simulation Analysis, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Simulation is one of industry’s most used operations research. Its uses range from answering questions about work-in-process and production feasibility to comparing alternative plans for system routing and scheduling.

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Theme Park Design And Layout, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Plant layout and design is one of the key areas of industrial engineering. There are numerous issues that must be accounted for. A subset include: machine utilization, queueing space, and flow of materials. To provide students with an introduction to plant layout and design, let's consider designing a theme park. As we will see, many of the concepts will be the same.

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. This fun and interactive penny manufacturing game highlights the impact of variability, capacity, and overtime.

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Bad Human Factor Designs, Paul Savory Oct 1999

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Bad Human Factor Designs, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Ergonomics or human factors does not only encompass product design, but safety, and product use. A simple definition is “to make the work place safe and less stressful on the worker.” Human factors or ergonomics impacts all aspects of our lives. Let's consider each of the following examples of bad human factor designs.

Introduction To Industrial Engineering: Operations Research, Paul Savory

Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

Classroom exercise for IMSE 150 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This goal is to introduce freshman industrial engineering students to various aspects of industrial engineering and being an engineer. Operations Research is an area of industrial engineering concerned with the allocation of scarce resources. One area of operations research is linear programming. Linear programming is a method often used to solve large, complicated problems. These problems often require a manager to determine how to use the company’s limited resources most efficiently.
