Structure And Optical Properties Of Self-Assembled Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanogels, Tao Cong, Satvik N. Wani, Peter Anthony Paynter, Radhakrishna Sureshkumar

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

Multicomponent plasmonic nanogels (PNGs) capable of broadband absorption of light in the 400-700 nm wavelength range were synthesized by the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles with wormlike surfactant micelles. Small angle x-ray scattering and rheological experiments suggest that the nanoparticles bridge micelle fragments to aid the formation a stable gel phase with exceptional color uniformity. Their optical absorbance could be robustly tuned by changing the nanoparticle type (Au/Ag), size, shape, and/or concentration. The PNGs have relatively low viscosity and are thermoreversible. Potential applications to the manufacturing of coatings and interfaces for solar energy harvesting and reconfigurable optical devices can be envisioned.

Using Laser Scanning Cytometry To Investigate The Transport Of Nano-Scale Particles In Porous Media, Ryan May

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The increased production of nanomaterials in recent years has been unprecedented. Given their potential toxicity, understanding the mechanisms controlling the transport of nanoparticles in the subsurface is important. In this study, a technique was developed for using a Laser Scanning Cytometer (LSC) to visualize and quantify the stable attachment of nano-scale particles. Experiments using three different size particles, 510 nm, 210 nm and 57 nm, in conjunction with a flow cell system containing saturated glass beads under varied injection duration, solution chemistry, Darcy velocity and solids content were performed. A technique for using the LSC data to develop spatial distributions …

Fabrication Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) (Pvdf) Nanofibers Containing Nickel Nanoparticles As Future Energy Server Materials, Faheem A. Sheikh, Travis Cantu, Javier Macossay-Torres, Hern Kim

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the present study, we introduce Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers containing nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs) as a result of an electrospinning. Typically, a colloidal solution consisting of PVDF/Ni NPs was prepared to produce nanofibers embedded with solid NPs by electrospinning process. The resultant nanostructures were studied by SEM analyses, which confirmed well oriented nanofibers and good dispersion of Ni NPs over them. The XRD results demonstrated well crystalline feature of PVDF and Ni in the obtained nanostructures. Physiochemical aspects of prepared nano-structures were characterized for TEM which confirmed nanofibers were welloriented and had good dispersion of Ni NPs. Furthermore, the …

Analysis Of Interband, Intraband, And Plasmon Polariton Transitions In Silver Nanoparticle Films Via In Situ Real-Time Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, S. A. Little, R. W. Collins, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The dielectric function of Ag nanoparticle films, deduced from an analysis of in situ real-time spectroscopic ellipsometry (RTSE) measurements, is found to evolve with time during deposition in close consistency with the film structure, deduced in the same RTSE analysis. In the nucleation regime, the intraband dielectric function component is absent and plasmon polariton behavior dominates. Only at nuclei contact, does the intraband amplitude appear, increasing above zero. Both intraband and plasmon amplitudes coexist during surface smoothening associated with coalescence. The intraband relaxation time increases rapidly after surface smoothening is complete, also in consistency with the thin film structural evolution.

Fabrication, Magnetic, And Ferroelectric Properties Of Multiferroic Bifeo3 Hollow Nanoparticles, Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, S X. Dou, Darren J. Attard, Xiaolin Wang

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Hollow BiFeO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by an electrospray route for the first time. The phase purity and structure have been investigated by x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Transmission and scanning electron microscope investigations revealed that the as-obtained BiFeO3 hollow spheres were polycrystalline, with a shell thickness of 35 nm. The formation mechanism can be possibly explained by Ostwald ripening. Raman spectra have verified decreased vibrational frequencies in BiFeO3 nanoparticles. These hollow and core-shell multiferroic nanoparticles exhibit significantly enhanced ferromagnetism from 5 to 600 K due to a broken spiral spin structure. The ferroelectricity of hollow BiFeO3 …

Magnetic And Ferroelectric Properties Of Multiferroic Bi2nimno6 Nanoparticles, Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, Peng Liu, S. X. Dou

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Multiferroic Bi2NiMnO6 nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple electrospray method. Bi2NiMnO6 nanoparticles crystallize in the monoclinic structure with space group C121. The particles show a uniform spherical shape with a diameter of 100 nm to 300 nm. The ferromagnetic transition of Bi2NiMnO6 is confirmed at 122 K. The room temperature ferroelectricity of the Bi2NiMnO6 nanoparticles is verified by Kelvin probe force microscopy.

Improved Reversible Dehydrogenation Of 2libh4+Mgh2 System By Introducing Ni Nanoparticles, Jianfeng Mao, Zaiping Guo, Xuebin Yu, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

We report that the hydrogen de/resorption of the 2LiBH4+MgH2 system was modified by introducing Ni nanoparticles. Dehydrogenation analysis revealed that the first-step dehydrogenation, i.e., the decomposition of MgH2, can be significantly promoted by adding a small amount of Ni because of the catalytic effect. However, the improvement of the second-step dehydrogenation, corresponding to the decomposition of LiBH4, needs the addition of a large amount of Ni, resulting in the formation of a Mg–Ni–B ternary alloy. Furthermore, the presence of the Mg–Ni–B ternary alloy allowed an increased reversible H-capacity, in which about 5.3 wt% …

Effect Of Titanium Dioxide Supports On The Activity Of Pt-Ru Toward Electrochemical Oxidation Of Methanol, Roderick E. Fuentes, Brenda L. García, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

TiO2and Nb-TiO2 were investigated as stable supports for Pt-Ru electrocatalysts towards methanol oxidation. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) data for all these TiO2-based supports show oxidation states of Ti4+, with no Ti3+, suggesting low electronic conductivity. However, the deposition of metal nanoparticles onto the supports at loadings of 60 wt% metal dramatically increased conductivity, making these electrodes (metal particles + support) suitable for electrochemistry even though the supports have low conductivity. For some of these TiO2-based supports, the activity of Pt-Ru towards methanol oxidation was excellent, even surpassing the activity …

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Single Silver Nanoparticles Studied By Dark-Field Optical Microscopy And Spectroscopy, Wei Cao, Tao Huang, Xiao-Hong Nancy Xu, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with different shapes and disk-shaped Ag NP pairs with varying interparticle distance is studied using dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy (DFOMS). Disk-, square-, and triangular-shaped Ag NPs were fabricated on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates by electron beam lithography. The LSPR spectra collected from single Ag NPs within 5×5 arrays using DFOMS exhibited pronounced redshifts as the NP shape changed from disk to square and to triangular. The shape-dependent experimental LSPR spectra are in good agreement with simulations using the discrete dipole approximation model, although there are small deviations in the …
