Guarding Against Machine Hazards, R. A. Cavaletto
Guarding Against Machine Hazards, R. A. Cavaletto
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Successful guarding strategies requires knowledge of machine functions, the physical and psychological characteristics of man, and the their interactions. Machine hazards are identified along with recognized guarding methods. Material is included that could be used to teach this subject (case study, prob!em set, glossary}.
A Transient Electromagnetic Flowmeter, Paul J. Lefebvre, William W. Durgin
A Transient Electromagnetic Flowmeter, Paul J. Lefebvre, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
An electromagnetic flowmeter was developed to measure transient flows with a frequency response of 60 Hz. The approach taken was to develop suitable electronics to replace the electronics of a commercially available electromagnetic flowmeter normally used for steady-state operation. Use of the commercially available flowmeter body, which includes the magnetic coils, core, and signal electrodes, provided a relatively economical means of fabricating the transient flowmeter. A transient flow calibration facility consisting of a free-falling water column was also designed and built. Results of the calibrations are presented and show that the flowmeter can accurately measure transient flows up to the …
Radiant Energy Transfer And Radiant Barrier Systems In Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey
Radiant Energy Transfer And Radiant Barrier Systems In Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey
FSEC Energy Research Center®
In Florida and other southern climates we depend on a number of strategies to keep heat out of buildings. Mostly, these affect heat gains by conduction or convection. In the average house, insulating walls and ceilings primarily restricts conduction. Double-glazed windows restrict both conductive and convective heat gain. We have largely ignored radiation - the third means of heat transfer - except in using window treatments and coatings that reflect, absorb or shade from solar energy. But research points to exciting potential for reducing heat gain in buildings by controlling radiation transfer in walls and ceilings through the use of …
Techniques For Shading Residential Walls And Windows, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey
Techniques For Shading Residential Walls And Windows, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Solar radiation is a major heat source in buildings - welcome in cold weather but a summertime problem. Florida's long cooling season and short heating season increase the importance of protecting windows, walls and sliding glass doors during hot weather, while still permitting solar heat to enter a building during cold weather. cooling and heating energy savings of 10% - 20% are possible through good shading strategies. Properly designed roof overhangs can provide adequate sun protection, especially for south-facing surfaces. Vertical shading devices such as trees, trellises, trellised vines, shutters, shading screens awnings and exterior roll blinds are also effective. …

Solar Ovens And Cookers, Florida Solar Energy Center
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Solar ovens work much like solar collectors used in domestic water heating systems. Both collect solar radiation, convert it to heat and transfer it to another substance. Solar ovens, however, focus the sun's rays with reflective surfaces on one point. The object of the sun's energy in the solar oven is the food.

FSEC Energy Research Center®
As energy extension agent for the University of Florida Extension Service, Jo Townsend serves as the energy educator to small businesses in central Florida. She conducts employee programs on energy conservation in the workplace. She received her B.S. in home economics from Florida State University and her M.E. from the University of Central Florida. Formerly a home economist for the Florida cooperative Extension Service, Townsend researched and tested recipes for use in microwaves when they first gained popularity. She has been a consultant to Southern Living magazine and to Florida's seafood industry. For the last year, she has tested recipes …

Shear Layer Coupling With Side-Branch Resonators, D. D. Erickson, William W. Durgin, C. F. Maguire Iii, M. J. Moeller
Shear Layer Coupling With Side-Branch Resonators, D. D. Erickson, William W. Durgin, C. F. Maguire Iii, M. J. Moeller
Office of the Provost Scholarship
High velocity flow past the junction of a side branch with a pipe can result in the excitation of depth-mode standing waves in the branch. The shear layer separating the main stream flow and the cavity provides coupling between the driving and the driven flow. Photographic evidence indicates that large scale vortex structures develop at the shear layer. The vortex formation process involves strongly non-linear instability of the shear layer and may be characterized as a non-linear fluid mechanical oscillator. The standing wave system formed in the cavity is essentially an acoustic wave system of nearly linear character. The principle …

Multistep Measurement Of Plantar Pressure Alterations Using Metatarsal Pads, An-Hsiung Chang, Ziad U. Abu-Faraj, Gerald F. Harris, Joe Nery, Michael J. Shereff
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Metatarsal pads are frequently prescribed for nonoperative management of metatarsalgia due to various etiologies. When appropriately placed, they are effective in reducing pressures under the metatarsal heads on the plantar surface of the foot. Despite the positive clinical reports that have been cited, there are no quantitative studies documenting the load redistribution effects of these pads during multiple step usage within the shoe environment. The objective of this study was to assess changes in plantar pressure metrics resulting from pad use. Ten normal adult male subjects were tested during a series of 400-step trials. Pressures were recorded from eight discrete …

A Checklist And Sample Specifications For Single And/Or Tandem Axle Dump Trucks, Herpicc
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
This publication is a revision to the February 1983 publication of the same title and contains a checklist and sample specifications to assist Indiana's Local Public Agencies in the procurement of dump trucks for use in the maintenance of local roads and streets. Most LPA's do not purchase such equipment in large numbers, hence many do not have highly qualified and experienced staff to assist in the development of the specifications for purchasing new equipment.
This checklist and the sample specifications provide for individual preferences. They are not intended to dictate decisions or restrict bidding. If followed, they will assure …

FSEC Energy Research Center®
In keeping with the national energy policy foal of fostering an adequate supply of energy at a reasonable cost, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) supports a variety of programs to promote a balanced and mixed energy resource system. The mission of the DOE Solar Building Research and Development Program is to support this goal by providing for the development of solar technology alternatives for the buildings sector. It is the goal of the Program to establish a proven technology base to allow industry to develop solar products and designs for buildings that are economically competitive and can contribute …

Metal Waveguide Modeling Of Tapered Quadratic Index Media, Lee W. Casperson, Bahram Zandi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The basic electromagnetic properties of tapered graded index fibers are equivalent to the properties of a class of concave metallic waveguides. Although useful in their own right, such metal waveguides also provide a straightforward and inexpensive means for studying the characteristics of more complicated tapered media.

Vegetable Oil As An Emergency Fuel, E. Holmes, Joseph L. Taraba, George M. Turner
Vegetable Oil As An Emergency Fuel, E. Holmes, Joseph L. Taraba, George M. Turner
Agricultural Engineering Energy Series
The unstable world political situation combined with the fact that a large amount of the world's oil reserves is located in the Middle East means we must continue to search for an alternate fuel source for our agricultural machinery. It is well-known that there is a limited amount of fossil fuels and even with no world political problems the demand will exceed supply in the not-too-distant future. The United States currently imports fossil fuels because we use more than we produce. Vegetable oils are a renewable resource. They offer a means of keeping our agricultural equipment operating in an oil …
