Experimental Investigation On Voip Performance And The Resource Utilization In 802.11b Wlans, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In a shared medium network like the 802.11b WLAN, predicting the quality of VoIP calls from the resource usage of the wireless medium is highly desirable. Analyzing the bandwidth usage at the L2/MAC layer may be especially useful for potential QoS provisioning and call admission schemes. This paper experimentally investigates the relationship between resource utilization in WLANS and the quality of VoIP calls transmitted over wireless medium. Specifically we evaluate how the amount of free bandwidth influences transmission impairments (i.e. delay, loss and jitter) and thus call quality. Resource utilization (under the MAC bandwidth components framework) is calculated by a …

Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Background Traffic Loads On Streamed Video Over 802.11b Wlans, Tanmoy Debnath, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Video is a frame based media and video streaming is often described as “bursty” which has a large impact on the Quality of Service of the video streaming application over WLAN networks. In this paper the impact of background load on the performance of streaming MPEG-4 video with a video server located on the wired network streaming to wireless client is analysed. We experimentally investigate the performance for both uplink and downlink loads. The performance is measured in terms of the key parameters of bit rate, loss rate and mean delay since these are the primary factors that affect the …

Experimental Analysis Of An 802.11b Wireless Mesh Network, Brian Keegan, Karol Kowalik, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are a type of radio-based network which require minimal configuration and infrastructure. They can be built using relatively low cost radio and computing platforms. In this paper we attempt to analyze the performance of a simple WNM using various packet sizes as well as a multi-hop WMN.

Performance Of A Variable Speed Double-Fed Induction Generator Wind Turbine During Network Voltage Unbalance Conditions, Joseph Kearney, Michael Conlon Sep 2006

Performance Of A Variable Speed Double-Fed Induction Generator Wind Turbine During Network Voltage Unbalance Conditions, Joseph Kearney, Michael Conlon

Conference papers

The issues of the negative performance of DFIG’s due to supply network voltage unbalance are outlined in this paper. The paper shows the effects that voltage unbalance can have on a DFIG, using the power simulation program DigSilent. The results from simulations show that voltage unbalance affects the both the induction generator and the rotor converter, due to the high unbalanced currents generated. The ability to modify the control strategy of a DFIG to compensate for voltage unbalance is outlined and a proposal to build a test-rig suitable to implement such a system is suggested.

The Effects Of Background Traffic On The End-To-End Delay For Video Streaming Applications Over Ieee 802.11b Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

The bursty nature of video streaming applications is due to the frame-based structure of video and this has an important impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN, affecting its ability to provide Quality of Service (QoS) particularly under heavily loaded conditions. In this paper we analyse this bursty behaviour in depth. We show how each video frame is queued at the AP causing the packet delay to vary in a sawtooth manner that is related to the frame rate, the number of packets per video frame, and the packet size. We infer the maximum background traffic load that can …

Modeling Liquid-Crystal Devices With The Three-Dimensional Full-Vector Beam Propagation Method, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova

Articles

Simulation of light propagation within nematic liquid-crystal (LC) devices is considered, of which the director is aligned normal to the z axis. A three-dimensional full-vector finite-difference beam propagation method for an anisotropic medium is presented and an alternating direction implicit scheme is adopted. Simulations of light propagation in a bulk polarization converter, a waveguide with a LC covering layer, and an integrated polarization splitter and optical switch are presented. Comparison with an existing simulation method is carried out for beam behavior within the bulk polarization converter. The effect of strong surface anchoring of a LC cell on the beam behaviors …

An Experimental Analysis Of The Call Capacity Of Ieee 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks For Voip Telephony, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper we present the results from an experimental study of the call capacity of an IEEE 802.11b network when using VoIP telephony. Experiments include increasing the number of VoIP users in a wireless test-bed and increasing the level of background traffic until network saturation occurs. The experiments allow us to perform an analysis of the access point (AP) buffer dynamics. Results show that the network is capable of supporting up to 16 VoIP stations (STAs). Due to the operation of the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) mechanism, the AP acts as a bottleneck for all traffic destined …

Gauging Voip Call Quality From 802.11 Wlan Resource Usage, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis Jun 2006

Gauging Voip Call Quality From 802.11 Wlan Resource Usage, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper we experimentally study the relationship between resource utilization in the wireless LAN and the quality of VoIP calls transmitted over the wireless medium. Specifically we evaluate how its overall capacity is shared between three basic MAC bandwidth components (load, access and free) as the number of VoIP calls increases and how it influences transmission impairments (delay, loss and jitter) and thus call quality. Resource utilization (under the MAC bandwidth components framework) is calculated by a WLAN probe application that passively “sniffs” packets at the L2/MAC layer of the wireless medium and analyses their headers and temporal characteristics. …

The Impact Of Tcp Sliding Window On The Performance Of Ieee 802.11 Wlans, Enrique Roques Gomez, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper the TCP sliding window mechanism is experimentally investigated as one of the possible causes of the unfairness often observed as IEEE802.11 wireless LANs. We show how by appropriately sizing the sliding window it is possible to re-introduce fairness into the operation of the WLAN.

Effect Of Free Bandwidth On Voip Performance In 802.11b Wlan Networks, Miroslaw Narbutt, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In this paper we experimentally study the relationship between bandwidth utilization in the wireless LAN and the quality of VoIP calls transmitted over the wireless medium. Specifically we evaluate how the amount of free bandwidth decreases as the number of calls increases and how this influences transmission impairments (i.e. delay, loss and jitter) and thus degrades call quality. We show that the amount of free bandwidth is a good indicator for predicting VoIP call quality.

Preliminary Results For A Monocular Marker-Free Gait Measurement System, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor May 2006

Preliminary Results For A Monocular Marker-Free Gait Measurement System, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor

Articles

This paper presents results from a novel monocular marker-free gait measurement system. The system was designed for physical and occupational therapists to monitor the progress of patients through therapy. It is based on a novel human motion capture method derived from model-based tracking. Testing is performed on two monocular, sagittal-view, sample gait videos – one with both the environment and the subject’s appearance and movement restricted and one in a natural environment with unrestricted clothing and motion. Results of the modelling, tracking and analysis stages are presented along with standard gait graphs and parameters.

A New Eccentric Geomagnetic Dipole To Give The Correct Dip Pole Locations, Annraoi De Paor, Ted Burke May 2006

A New Eccentric Geomagnetic Dipole To Give The Correct Dip Pole Locations, Annraoi De Paor, Ted Burke

Articles

In this paper, we describe a new eccentric dipole model of the Earth’s magnetic field. The constraints under which the conventional eccentric dipole model is defined result in predicted dip pole locations that differ significantly from the measured locations. Here, we give a preliminary exposition of a new dipole model which, because it is constrained by the observed dip pole locations, overcomes this problem.

Integrated Antenna For Multiband Multi-National Wireless Combined With Gsm1800/Pcs1900/Imt2000 + Extension, Matthias John, Max Ammann

Articles

A printed triple-band monopole antenna appropriate for use as a terminal antenna in modern wireless multiband systems is proposed. The impedance bandwidth of each band has been optimised using a quasi-Newton technique and the bandwidth includes virtually all wireless bands. Various parameter sweeps are presented which improve our understanding of the antenna, in particular, the effect of groundplane-size and branch-off point on impedance bandwidth and radiation pattern.

A Novel Gps Patch Antenna On A Fractal Hi-Impedance Surface Substrate, Xiulong Bao, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Matthias John

Articles

A compact high-performance circularly-polarized microstrip antenna for the global positioning system application is proposed. It comprises a fractal hi-impedance surface electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure printed on a high permittivity substrate. Measurements and simulation of return loss and axial ratio are in good agreement. It is shown that the proposed Global Positioning System antenna has good axial ratio performance in the upper half-plane, an improvement in gain and a significantly wider axial ratio bandwidth when compared to the same antenna without EBG

From L-Shaped Planar Monopoles To A Novel Folded Antenna With Wide Bandwidth, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann Jan 2006

From L-Shaped Planar Monopoles To A Novel Folded Antenna With Wide Bandwidth, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann

Articles

A novel folded monopole antenna is investigated numerically and experimentally. The proposed antenna comprises a short folded monopole suitably shaped at the base with two vertical grounding probes. This small antenna is shown to have a fractional impedance bandwidth up to 125% (1.6 GHz to 7.5 GHz) for a 10 dB return loss. An interesting compromise between impedance bandwidth and pattern control is found by tuning a double side bevel at the base of the monopole, the position of the feeding point and its distance from the ground plane. Measurements and simulations are in good agreement and show a dramatic …

Wideband Dual Polarized Directional Base Station Antenna, Francisco L. Lerma

Masters

The thesis presents a study of different microwave radiators for wireless applications in the frequency range of 2.2 – 2.5GHz. The performance of microstrip patch antennas and dual polarized dipole antennas were evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. A single microstrip patch and a four- element microstrip array were simulated, fabricated and tested. Simulation was carried out by the finite integration time domain (FITD) method. Polarization diversity is realised using crossed dipoles printed elements. For the crossed dipole elements, two different feed arrangements were studied. Parameters such as return loss, isolation, radiation pattern, gain and bandwidth were measured and found to …

Articles

An integrated polarization beam splitter based on a directional coupler (DC) with an etched slot and filled-in liquid crystal covering layer, which utilizes the birefringence of liquid crystal materials, is proposed. A supermode solution for the DC involving birefringence materials and the corresponding full-vector anisotropic beam propagation method are employed as modeling tools. A numerical design of the proposed structure is presented. Beam propagation behavior along the whole structure involving curved input and output regions and central coupling region is simulated. Simulation result shows an extinction ratio of 25.3 and 41.9 dB for the TE and TM mode, respectively.

All-Fiber Multimode-Interference-Based-Refractometer Sensor:Proposal And Design, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

A novel all-fiber refractometer sensor is proposed, which is based on multimode interference in the multimode fiber core section sandwiched between two single-mode fibers. A wide-angle beam propagation method in the cylindrical coordinate is employed as the modeling tool for simulation and design of the proposed refractometer sensor. The design for a refractometer is presented that shows that the refractometer would have an estimated resolution of 5.4×10−5 for refractive indices from 1.33 to 1.45 and of 3.3×10−5 for refractive indices from 1.38 to 1.45 through the choice of an appropriate length of the multimode fiber core section.

Analysis Of Strain And Intermixing In Single-Layer Ge/Si Quantum Dots Using Polarized Raman Spectroscopy, Anna Baranov, A. V. Federov, Tatiana Perova, R. A. Moore, V. Yam, D. Bouchier, V. Le Thanh, Kevin Berwick

Articles

The built-in strain and composition of as-grown and Si-capped single layers of Ge∕Si dots grown at various temperatures (460–800 °C) are studied by a comparative analysis of the Ge-Ge and Si-Ge modes in the polarized Raman spectra of the dots. A pronounced reduction of the strain and Ge content in the dots after deposition of the cap layer at low temperatures is observed, indicating that strain-induced Si diffusion from the cap layer is occurring. For large dots grown at 700–800 °C the observations are in agreement with a model of the Ge∕Si dot consisting of a Si-rich boundary region and …

Study Of The Behaviour Of Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11b Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis Jan 2006

Study Of The Behaviour Of Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11b Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

The performance of video streaming over WLAN networks is not only influenced by the state of the network but also by the encoding configuration parameters of the video stream, such as the video content being streamed, how the vide is encoded and how it is transmitted. In this paper, we analyse the unique delay characteristic of video streaming applications in a WLAN environment. We show that the “burstiness” of video is due to the frame-based nature of encoded video. We show how each video frame is transmitted as a burst of packets that is queued at the Access Point causing …

Wideband Directional Base-Station Antenna With Dual-Linear And Circular-Polarization Capabilities, Francisco Lerma, Matthias John, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, N. Herscovici

Conference papers

A crossed-dipole antenna providing polarization diversity is presented. The antenna which employs a planar reflector yields high directivity and good isolation between ports over a wide impedance bandwidth, suitable for polarization-agile wireless base-station use. The dipole wing shape is optimised, which yields the wide bandwidth. Matching is achieved using a quarter-wave balanced-to-unbalanced section which also improves the port-to-port isolation. Radiation characteristics for linear and circular polarizations are presented

Performance Improvement Using Simple Pid Controller Tuning Formulae, Aidan O'Dwyer Jan 2006

Performance Improvement Using Simple Pid Controller Tuning Formulae, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

The proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is the most dominant form of automatic controller in industrial use today. With this technique, it is necessary to adjust the controller parameters according to the nature of the process. Thus, for effective control of a HVDC system, for example, specific values need to be chosen for the P, I and D parameters, which will be different for the values required to control, for example, an induction motor drive. This tailoring of controller to process is known as controller tuning. Controller tuning is easily and effectively performed using tuning rules (i.e. formulae for controller …
