A Semi-Infinite Interfacial Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Elastic Strips, Xiang-Fa Wu, E. Lilla, W.-S. Zou Nov 2002

A Semi-Infinite Interfacial Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Elastic Strips, Xiang-Fa Wu, E. Lilla, W.-S. Zou

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with a semi-infinite interfacial crack between two bonded dissimilar elastic strips with equal thickness. Solutions for the complex stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR) are obtained in closed form under in-plane deformations. During the procedure, the mixed boundary-value problem is reduced by means of the conformal mapping technique to the standard Riemann–Hilbert problem. In some limiting cases, the present solutions can cover the results found in literature.

Comparison Of Radiated Power From Structurally Different Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs Nov 2002

Comparison Of Radiated Power From Structurally Different Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

The acoustic power has been determined from intensity measurements on three structurally different violins: a Scherl and Roth student violin, Hutchins' SUS29S, and Hutchins' mezzo violin SUS 100. While each violin was bowed with an open-frame mechanical bowing machine, the intensity measurements were made by scanning each side of the bowing machine with an intensity probe. One-third octave band sound power levels of the acoustic radiation from each of the three instruments as each of the four open strings is bowed show that the structurally different mezzo violin produces greater power at low frequencies when the lowest (G) string is …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With An Interfacial Edge Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Piezoelectric Wedges, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Wen-Sheng Zou

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This letter is concerned with an interface edge crack interacting with a screw dislocation under antiplane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial wedge. In addition with a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. The out-of-plane displacement and electric potentials are obtained in closed-form on the basis of the conformal mapping technique and the solution for a screw dislocation in an infinite piezoelectric bimaterial with a semi-infinite interface crack. The intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rate (ERR) are obtained explicitly.

Rectangular Bursting Energy Absorber, John D. Reid, John R. Rohde, Dean L. Sicking Oct 2002

Rectangular Bursting Energy Absorber, John D. Reid, John R. Rohde, Dean L. Sicking

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A bursting energy absorber System having an impact head, and energy absorption mechanism. The energy absorbing mechanism has a generally rectangular mandrel for rupturing cooperating thin-walled generally rectangular tubes in a controlled rupture to absorb impact forces for a colliding vehicle. A frame may be used to mount the System to a truck, trailer, guardrail, median barrier end treatment, or a crash cushion. Stress concetrators such as saw cuts or scoring may be incorporated into the absorption tubes to selectively control rupturing and energy dissipation. The mandrels may be tapered, rectangulary shaped with beveled edges to reduce frictional forces along …

Closed-Form Solution For A Mode-Iii Interfacial Edge Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Elastic Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Sep 2002

Closed-Form Solution For A Mode-Iii Interfacial Edge Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Elastic Strips, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

A closed-form solution is obtained for the problem of a mode-III interfacial edge crack between two bonded semi-infinite dissimilar elastic strips. A general out-of-plane displacement potential for the crack interacting with a screw dislocation or a line force is constructed using conformal mapping technique and existing dislocation solutions. Based on this displacement potential, the stress intensity factor (SIF, KIII) and the energy release rate (ERR, GIII) for the interfacial edge crack are obtained explicitly. It is shown that, in the limiting special cases, the obtained results coincide with the results available in the literature. The present …

Closed-Form Solution For The Size Of Plastic Zone In An Edge-Cracked Strip, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Sep 2002

Closed-Form Solution For The Size Of Plastic Zone In An Edge-Cracked Strip, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper is concerned with the problem of plastic zone at the tip of an edge crack in an isotropic elastoplastic strip under anti-plane deformations. By means of complex potential and Dugdale model, the stress intensity factor and the size of plastic zone are obtained in closed-form. Furthermore, the analytic solutions for an edge crack at the free boundary of a half-space and a semi-infinite crack heading towards a free surface are determined as the limiting cases of the strip geometries.

In Situ Corrosion Studies On The Battleship Uss Arizona, John D. Makinson, James D. Carr, Matthew A. Russell, David L. Conlin, Larry E. Murphy

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

U.S. National Park Service Submerged Resources Center archaeologists and University of Nebraska-Lincoln metallurgists are assessing hull corrosion by drilling through accumulated concretions and measuring pH and corrosion potentials. Concretion samples are being analyzed to determine the role of microbes in the corrosion process, identify chemical species, and measure electrical and physical properties. The lowest values of pH and E corr occur at the metal/concretion interface. Analysis suggests a variable corrosion rate supported by hydrogen discharge and/or oxygen reduction inside the concretion.

Thermodynamics And Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler Mar 2002

Thermodynamics And Bioenergetics, Yaşar Demirel, Stanley I. Sandler

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

Bioenergetics is concerned with the energy conservation and conversion processes in a living cell, particularly in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. This review summarizes the role of thermodynamics in understanding the coupling between the chemical reactions and the transport of substances in bioenergetics. Thermodynamics has the advantages of identifying possible pathways, providing a measure of the efficiency of energy conversion, and of the coupling between various processes without requiring a detailed knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. In the last five decades, various new approaches in thermodynamics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and network thermodynamics have been developed to understand the transport and …

Chemical Partitioning During Crystallization And Its Effect On The Microstructure And Magnetic Behavior Of Modified Nd–Fe–B Permanent Magnets, Jeffrey E. Shield, B. B. Kappes, D. J. Branagan, J. Bentley Jan 2002

Chemical Partitioning During Crystallization And Its Effect On The Microstructure And Magnetic Behavior Of Modified Nd–Fe–B Permanent Magnets, Jeffrey E. Shield, B. B. Kappes, D. J. Branagan, J. Bentley

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, the effect of alloy composition on the microstructural development of devitrified Nd–Fe–B-based alloys is investigated. While crystallization of simple ternary Nd2Fe14B resulted in a highly variable microstructure and relatively poor demagnetization behavior, alloying additions, notably Ti and C, were found to significantly refine and homogenize the crystallized microstructure. High spatial resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that partitioning to the grain boundaries led to the grain refinement by slowing interface kinetics. The more homogeneous grain structure resulted in improved demagnetization behavior, but segregating elements isolated grains and limited intergranular exchange coupling.

Prediction Of Soakout Time Using Analytical Models, B. Chakravarthy, H. P. Cherukuri, R. G. Wilhelm Jan 2002

Prediction Of Soakout Time Using Analytical Models, B. Chakravarthy, H. P. Cherukuri, R. G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

In precision manufacturing enterprises, machine parts at nonstandard temperatures are often soaked to standard temperature prior to making any dimensional measurements. The soakout times are usually determined using lumped heat-transfer models where the part temperatures are assumed to be uniform. This article discusses conditions under which lumped model assumptions are valid by comparing lumped analyses for various shapes and materials with the more general finite element results. In addition, the effect of ambient temperature cycling on part response is also studied.
